An Nam Il

Nam Il stared up at the book far above him. With big navy blue letters, it proudly announced itself as the chemistry book that he needed to finish his project with, in the most blatantly taunting manner. Not that he really needed the information in there. All that he wanted from it was the citation information so he could say that he had six legitimate sources. There was just one problem. He was very short. The shelf was very high. There were no stools around and the shelves were too thin to be used as ladders. The books would just fall out through the back and the librarians would get angry at him again.

This was why he did not very much care for school.

Logically, the boy knew that he wasn't supposed to use his powers for something as mundane as retrieving things from high places. But this was actually a bit frustrating and what exactly was the attraction aura going to do in a place where the supernatural was already out in the open? Just make people look at him a few seconds longer? He didn't think anybody particularly non human was within eyesight, anyways.

He grabbed the biggest book within reach, some kind of science text with lots of big and pretty pictures, and it immediately turned into a green Asian style lantern. As he let it fall from his hand, a silvery pole began to extend out until it was drawn at about three feet long. More than enough for his purposes.

Very, very carefully, Nam Il touched the non lantern end of the stick to the top of the chemistry book's spine and gently tugged it back.

This is stupid.
There were so many things she ought to be doing that didn't involve being cooped up in a library shuffling through dusty old manuscripts. She could be outside roaming the woods, or hanging out with a few friends, or meddling with the teacher's drinks...
Instead here she was. Peering lazily at a pile of textbooks stacked before her, books about math and science and magic and English and who knows what else. She swallowed.
This was not how she'd planned to spend her evening.
With a reluctant sigh Summer leafed open the first book she'd begrudgingly picked out. Squiggles of algebra and equations leaped before her eyes (okay, maybe she did need to start paying attention in class because she had no idea what the heck this was all about); glaring at the small text and long, oh so achingly long pages, Summer finally sighed. It was too much. She was never going to understand it.
It was times like this she wished she had a useful power; maybe something like a photographic memory, or an endless supply of knowledge. Oh! Or maybe the power to read people's minds! Then she could cheat all she wanted! Really, how was sprouting cat ears and talking to kittens going to help her in exams? Or in life in general?
Gee, all this hard work's making me thirsty! I'll come back in five minutes or something. I'm sure I'll get it then!
Summer hated how quiet the library was. She just wanted to shout, to fill it with something other than the quiet steps of other visitors and the imaginary chirping of crickets! Stomping loudly through an isle, Summer was about to take her leave - she might be able to get away with sneaking out - when she spotted a short boy, reaching desperately for a book with a...lantern-pole-thingy? Oh, now this was interesting!
Before he could pull the book down, Summer popped up before him (as she had an unexpected habit of doing) and leaned comfortably against the shelf. "Hey," she said, with a flash of a smile. "Whatcha doing? Need help?" She wasn't exactly a genius when it came to observing a situation - indeed, it was rather obvious what the boy was doing and that he had it under some sort of control. But Summer wasn't one to use her head before speaking. It was rather evident in many situations, such as this.
"Oh, I know!" And before he could even muster a reply she was onto a different topic, hopping excitedly from foot to foot. "Are you reading a comic? I love comics! Let's see - huh! Aww...it's only a textbook. B-O-R-I-N-G! Did the teachers make you study too? Cool lantern by the way! It's so pretty!"

"Ack!" He stumbled back in surprise as a girl seemingly materialized out of nowhere. The end of the pole knocked several books off of the shelf, including the one he had been trying to take down. Not possibly being fast enough to catch them all, Nam Il threw up his arms to protect his head, cringing as he heard books thumping against the ground.

The librarians definitely had heard that, and he didn't want to get thrown out before he could get the information he needed. Frantically, he began turning books over, ducking his head as he answered the girl back. The lantern left his hand at some point and returned to its normal bookish state.

"Um, sorry, no, I wish. I'm just getting a citation," Nam Il said in a half whisper, worriedly listening for the sound of angry footsteps. They weren't coming yet, which meant he had time. The girl who was there, however, was being pretty loud. "Comics later, I need to finish this for my chemistry project first."

In great relief, he found the textbook and opened it up, immediately memorizing the little bit that he wanted. Something, something, some professor at some university somewhere. And oh, good, it had been published within the last decade as well! "Um, yes, thank you. I can make lanterns from things. It has its uses."

Was somebody coming? Nam Il glanced through a space on the bookshelf.

"Eek!" As if to add to her piercing loudness, when the books toppled from their shelves Summer shrieked and stumbled back. Unaware of how her own obtrusion had caused the cacophony, she looked curiously up at the shelf and frowned; "I wonder what did that...think it's a ghost?"

Well, it didn't matter. Because it seemed Summer had to already forgotten the 'library ghost fiasco' (as she would come to call the mystery) and was instead looking much more intently at the boy's lantern; what once was beautifully green had formed back into a book. She'd never seen something like that before. It was strange, and she couldn't help wondering just what deep powers lay beneath its surface.

Leaning down to help him pick up the scattered books, Summer continued on. "Chemistry huh? You must me smart. I never do my homework!" She stifled a sigh and, placing her stack back on the shelves (rather untidily but it would do) Summer finally focused her full attention on the boy before her.

He was one of the quiet types. She liked those kinds of people; they were always so flighty and funny! It was always amusing to tease them. "I'm Summer! What's your name?"

The sound of steps interrupted them. Like a true master of stealth Summer's catlike reflexes kicked in; she pressed herself back against the shelf, eyes narrowed, measuring breathing, and peered around the corner. As if summoned only by instinct her ears popped out, and twitched; someone was coming, and they weren't far away; just a few shelves lay between them in fact. From the heavy steps she thought that it must be a librarian, but it wasn't exactly certain. With a decisive nod she shook away her ears and smiled at Nam Il. "Come on," she whispered, quiet for the first time, "let's get outta here!"

"Eh? What was that? A ghost? It's probably just my magic." He almost missed what she said, despite how loud it had been, just because of how focused he had been on not getting caught. If there really was one around, though, it probably was just one of the more deceased students who happened to catch sight of his lantern. Now that it was gone, though, the compulsion to come closer had definitely vanished. Unless they just wanted to see what was going on.

"Uh, I'm not that smart," Nam Il was quick to say. He know that he was but it felt weird to say so and he saw plenty of normal kids doing great things on their own anyways. "You should probably- oh, yeah, my name is Nam Il. Nice to meet you?" She certainly was one of the louder people that he had met but at least she seemed nice. She didn't like school much but that was completely understandable in his opinion.

He watched in confusion as Summer suddenly seemed to go into ninja mode. With cat ears? That was a new one to him. "But, no, you should really-" the boy started before freezing up as well when his normal human ears picked up footsteps at last. Oh no! Wait, he had gotten everything he needed right? Quickly, Nam Il put the book down.

When Summer suggested that they run, he nodded in agreement. "Side door, don't go for the back one!" He hissed quietly. The librarians always knew to check for the back doors.
