Old and Broken Bodies

Sasha cradled her gently in his arms as he walked, sheltering her worn body from the world around them.

“Królik…” He touched her wounds gently. His sudden trip to the Manta Carlos Islands had not been kind to her old fabric, and there were little tears in her body now – similarly, there were little tears in his own. His shirt had acquired little splotches of red from where he had injured himself, because he didn’t have any bandages at his apartment.

He should have brought thread with him, he thought, frowning. That way he wouldn’t have to risk bringing her out here in the open.

He walked briskly as he scanned the streets around him, searching for anything that looked like a fabric shop.

Why the hell Alice went to Manta Carlos arcade was something she didn't spend much thought on. She already had more videogames then even the most hardcore of geeks, yet something had compelled her to check out the local videogaming establishments of of Manta Carlos despite this. Thankfully, they didn't disappoint. The day was particularly fruitful, especially since she, a pretty little 14 year old girl, had managed to humiliate a regular customer at Street Fighter and won a big stuffed pikachu that was now tucked under her arm as she happily skipped through the streets of downtown manta carlos, humming "UN Owen was her" to herself.

However, as she was on her way back to the schoo something caught her eye, a grown man carrying a stuffed bunny! The bunny was quite adorable, to say the least, and reminded Alice of her own extensive collection of stuffed bunnies that she kept in one of her many mansions that lay so far away from the school. However...something about the bunny...and the man...was off. He had a sad, forlorn look on his face, and seemed concerned that the bunny had some wear and tear. Immedatly feeling sympathy for the poor stuffed bunny, Alice stopped her happy skipping and approached the man and his toy.

"I don't mean to intrude or anything, but I couldn't help but notice your friend there is pretty beat up. I have a lot of stuffed bunnies that I love and would hate to see all torn up, so I can't help but feel sorry for the poor thing! Maybe I can help you fix the bunny up? I think I know a place I could take you that could help..." Alice said politely yet energeticly to Sasha.

His first instinct at the girl’s assault was to shy away. What did she want with him? Couldn’t she see he was busy?

Oh. He frowned at her overenthusiastic reaction, but she seemed to understand his care for her, and he relaxed somewhat. “Her name is Królik.” The little bunny turned her head to look at the stranger and twitched her nose.

“Hello,” she said softly.

Sasha pulled her a little closer to himself. “What shop is it? Where?”

"SHE'S SO CUTE!" Alice exclaimed as Krolik came to life, squeeling a bit after. She quickly collected herself, however, and then continued to speak. "I'm sorry....I kinda came on too fast..I didn't even tell you my name! I'm Alice!....and as for the shop, well, maybe I can take you there, it's not too far from here and it's kinda on the way! I also want to find out more about your little friend there! Is she like some kind of spirit inside the doll?" Alice continued to Sasha. "Oh!..and I almost forgot. I'd like to know your name too, if you don't mind! Kinda forgot to ask that.." Alice said to sasha, letting out a somewhat embarrassed giggle.

Inside Alice's mind, however, Krolik piqued her intrest in more ways then one. I wonder...what exactly is that bunny...and who is this man. He could have some kind of spirit in there...or another power that would be useful to me. Perhaps if I can pry some information out of him, I can find out if he'd make a good doll. Alice thought to herself while examining Sasha. I could just mind hack him and call it day....but I don't know if he has some ability to resist it yet...I should find out what his powers are first...and then once I know I'm safe I can pry his mind open and read it like a book... Alice continued to think to herself as she planned her next moves.

Back in the world outside of Alice asked Sasha the invertible question. "So, do you want me to take you to that shop?

Sasha jolted at the woman’s reaction, instinctively shielding his rabbit from her. “You definitely came on too fast,” he snapped, though he quickly gathered himself. “Królik is my friend. That’s all you need to know.”

“…Hm. There’s no need to trouble you with such things, but if you’re not busy I suppose you could show me the way.” She made him feel on edge, though it hardly showed on the outside – he was his usual distant self, with a bit of glaring to boot.

"I really am sorry," Alice lied, putting on an apologetic face. "It's just, I really like dolls but you don't see people talking much about them anymore." She hung her head down in a dejected fashion. "I'm fourteen right now and people keep telling me how I'm supposed to grow out of it. But I refuse!" She lifted her head high and proudly at that last sentence. "There's nothing wrong with loving dolls!"

Immediately afterwards, she shrank back as if embarrassed. "So, I'm really sorry. I'll lead you to the shop now, but could we start over first? Hi, I'm Alice. And you two are?"

He’d already gotten a few strange looks, and he knew it. Part of him wished he’d put Królik in some sort of bag, hidden from view, but he knew she hated to be confined like that, so there was little option but to endure.

Even if it meant dealing with doll-crazed little girls. He didn’t like the implications in this girl’s sentence. Sasha didn’t stay with Królik because he had some sort of strange doll-fetish. He stayed because she was his best friend, not… just one of many. “Well, you enjoy yourself.” He had the feeling he didn’t particularly want to piss her off. Not just yet, at least.

“My name is Sasha, and this is Królik.” The little doll looked at her curiously, her legs swaying back and forth. Two sets of eyes were sharper than one, after all, and this way he could keep an eye on her as he kept walking forward.

"It's nice to meet you two, then!"

There really was something off about this man and Alice couldn't tell if it was the fact that he was a big Russian with a maybe sentient doll or something else. Clearly it had to be the something else because there was nothing funny about dolls. I really do wonder if it's haunted. Haunted dolls were always the best. Definitely, this one wasn't functioning on technology because Alice would have been able to tell that one from a mile away.

"The shop's just a couple of blocks away," she told Sasha cheerfully as she led the way. "It's called The Looking Glass." And of course was run by SPECTER, although the more business side that was actually legal on the island. The employees weren't even mind hacked! As far as Alice was concerned, they were just too far down the ladder for her to bother with that.

"Is there anything that the people there would need to know about Królik before they begin making her good as new?" Alice asked him, as non-threateningly and casual as she could. Seeing how her excitement had put him off earlier, she was determined to not make the same mistake. "Any things that they should avoid doing, or should do, or things like that?"

Actually, by Sasha’s book “just a couple of blocks” was already obnoxiously far away. It wasn’t undoable, but he certainly didn’t like it. He couldn’t even research whatever strange shop she had recommended to him, not when Królik was here with him.

So he couldn’t say he liked what the girl said next. “I just need to buy some materials,” he grumbled. “Thread, the like. I’ll do any repairs myself.” He wouldn’t hand Królik off to strangers, not for the world.

"Really, it's just that?" Alice asked with surprise in her voice. "No unusual materials or anything? That's kind of weird. I thought that with how special Królik is, you'd need something equally special to make repairs."

And that was a really unhelpful answer, actually. If he's not going to tell me straight off, I guess I'll really have to mind hack him. She could probably get away with it once they got to the shop. Hack the employees first so that they wouldn't see anything, hack Sasha to get information. Unknown step where she did whatever. Profit.
