Emily fidgeted a little, letting her eyes wander over the evening shadows. "I-I suppose I'd like that... I-Is... that Addy?... You speak so fondly of her..."

Em examined the drink when it was set in front of her for a few moments, before taking a sip of it. The alcoholic flavor hit her harder then she expected, and she coughed a couple times.

She blushed a little bit at Lochlann's next question. "S-Something I've never told a-anyone? I... I don't know if I h-have anything like that..." It occurred to her that she was a rather open person for how shy she was.

"U-Um... I... Um..." She fidgeted a little bit, staring into the orangeness of her drink. "I taste so many things all the time, s-so... Unexpected f-flavors surprise me more then m-most..."

She paused for several moments, before reaching into her purse and producing the tarot deck. "Y-You wanted to do this right? have m-me tell your f-fortune... It w-would probably be best if we did this before we got our food..."

Though Lochlann smiled when she said Addy's name, he shook his head no.

"Her name is Avian. I met her at the coffee shop down town in the spring," he said

When she coughed, Lochlann reached over to pat her on the back and ask if she was okay.

He was settled into his seat and sipping on his creamsickle thing when Emily told him her chosen fact.

"What flavor surprised you the most?" he asked. Her powers were an engima to him and he was curious to learn more.

Instead, she pulled out the cards, and Lochlann felt a mixture of excitement and fear. He'd wanted this, after all, but now that it was time he was a little nervous.

"I suppose you're right," he said. "What do i need to do?"

"Alright then... S-Sure... I'd like to m-meet her..." She fidgeted around a little bit, occasionally sipping her drink. "There isn't one in particular, but l-like... If y-you expect soda to be water... I-It's a different e-experience th-then if you were expecting soda..."

She set the cards on the table in front of him. "First... c-clear your mind and focus on yourself... then cut the deck, however you like... then from the top draw..." She seemed to fade off a little, losing herself in the consideration. "... five cards... Yes, then arrange them on the table and flip them in whichever order you like"

Emily waited patiently, and the first card turned was the Ace of penticals. Em stared down at the card, looking deep in thought. "... New opportunities will become available to you... Though what you do with them will be up to you..."

Next was the High Priestess. "Mystery... Secrets... A... A woman of interest... Could be involving the woman, or towards her..."

She watched as he turned the next card over. The Lovers, inverted. "... Failure or... Probably a foolish action or... Perhaps just an uncomfortable situation... It's probably of a romantic sort considering the previous card."

The last two cards were the Tower, and Death, both inverted. "... Oh dear... I... Think these to might possibly be connected... I'm not sure... The tower mean imprisonment or oppression... possibly both?... Then lethargy... I sense sleep..."

Emily blinked, and looked up at Loch, seeming to come out of fortune teller mode. She blushed, and picked up her whiskey-sickle and took a couple gulps. "...S-Sorry... I... I-I guess that wasn't a very good fortune huh... It... It's not a guarantee... You could still change it..."

Lochlann followed her instructions.

It was hard to clear his mind and focus since he wasn't sure what he was supposed to be focusing on, and because anytime his mind went blank, he saw Guinevere Haze holding the gun to his chest.

He swallowed and set the cards on the table.

As she drew them, he looked and listened intently to the meaning before each of them. He liked the new opportunities one. Lochlann needed a job, and he needed to figure out what was going to happen with school. He was pleased to see this card.

But then, there was the high priestess.

Something in her eyes, the dead way she started up at him, again reminded him of Guinevere Haze.

The card numbed him, even with the lovers, and the tower and death didn't have as much of an impact as it might have otherwise. He chewed on the inside of his cheek.

"Thank you," he said. When she worried, he gave a little laugh and shook his hand to dismiss her concerns. "It's not like you're controlling my future, only I am, so don't apologize. I'm glad to have known it."

He felt like he needed a drink.

Lochlann took a huge mouthful and swallowed.

He was afraid, but he didn't realize it.

"Who taught you to read cards?"

Emily fidgeted a little bit, the mug still in her hands being nursed by the nervous girl. "W-Well... I-I-I hope your future is brighter th-then it a-appears... I-I hope my reading has prepared you to take h-hold of it..."

Emily licked her lips, the smallest hint of anticipation coming off of Loch lingering in the air around her. This wasn't unusual, a lot of people got antsy after a reading. "M... My mother taught me... She is better at it then me... I only use about half a deck, and l-limit my number of cards... Sh-She can read the full deck though, a-and her readings are in big patterns and use so many c-cards..."

She sipped her drink, watching Lochlann over her mug. "... B-But sometimes... She j-just uses three... The pattern and number are determined by what you want to know... A-And who you're reading... S-Sometimes..." She gathered up the cards and slid them back into the deck, replacing it in her purse under the flowers again.

She cleared her throat with a little cough as the silence slowly began to grow more awkward. "S-So... H-How are things with you?... Was there a-anything in the cards that might be happening soon?"

"I hope so, too," Lochlann said. At this, he managed to muster up something like a laugh. Hell, he knew he was doomed already--why did he think tarot cards would tell him anything differently?

Resignation, he felt, and it was bitter like coffee grounds

When the conversations turned to mothers, Lochlann's face and body did not betray any sort of change, but h felt a sharp pang of unexplained loss. It happened and was buried so quickly that Lochlann didn't even know why he was picking up his drink.

"That sounds like it's a nice memory," Lochlann said. And he meant that, too. his angst was completely gone and he didn't even realize it had ever happened. Now, he was left with only a warm feeling of having an enjoyable conversation with a girl who was becoming his friend. "Have you been reading long?"

This was easy and uncomplicated. Lochlann liked uncomplicated.

Anything that might be happening soon?

"Well...they're a little big vague, so it's hard to tell, but I hope the new opportunity is college," Lochlann said. "I didn't want to be here. But I'm here. I hope it pans out into something better."

Emily licked her lips at the sudden bitterness. She stiffened a little bit, and looked up at Lochlann, tilting her head slightly. "... What about... Consistencies?... Were there any of those?.."

She began watching him carefully, the lack of other people around meaning her senses focused in on Loch's emotions. She was catching a lot of interesting things from him. She set her drink down, blushing a little when she realized it was already half gone, and pushed it to the side a little. "Do... Do you have any fond memories?...Maybe of..."

The waitress returned with their food, cutting Em off from her train of thought. Her focus was beginning to fade as the alcohol took hold of her mind. She wasn't drunk or anything at this point, but there was a pleasant buzz swirling in the back of her head, distracting her from her thoughts.

She began to take small bites of her burger. She ate in a rather proper way, slowly nibbling away at her food and pretty regularly using a napkin, but it wasn't like she was using a fork and knife or anything. "I guess a l-lot of people don't f-feel like they get a choice when they c-come here... I h-hope things work out for you..." She blushed again, and hid behind her burger. That had sounded more intimate then she'd meant it to be.

“Consistencies?” Lochlann didn’t quite understand what she meant by this. He tilted his head to the side just as the waitress placed the burgers down, then thanked her for the service. He ordered another drink and looked to Emily, wanting to see if she wanted any more.

He was biting into hers when Emily started, and stopped, a lot of questions. He noted what she said and nodded.

"Did you choose to come here?" he asked her. "Or did you feel like there wasn't a choice?"

"What I mean i-is... Is th-there anything that might b-be true now... That m-might persist into the future..." That was the best way she could describe it.

Em declined another drink. She was already feeling the effects of the first one, she didn't want to embarrass herself because she ended up wasted from getting more drinks. She briefly pondered what might happen before blushing and dismissing the thought. I'm blushing and Lochlann doesn't know why. I'm being weird.

"I chose to attend. I w-wanted to develop my abilities... A-And a free sc-school is h-hard to pass up..." She nibbled at her food, letting her response just hang in the air for a moment. "... W-What about you?... What m-made you come here?... I-If it's okey to ask..."

True now that might persist into the future?

Lochlann actually laughed.

"Girl trouble," he confessed. He took another bite of his burger and looked anxiously at the door for the waitress to return with his drink. Thinking of girl trouble sometimes made him think of getting shot in the leg. What a bitch.

He shook his head.

"Yeah, it's okay, especially since I asked you," he said. He chewed on his bottom lip and tried to think of how to tell her. "I was expelled from a lot of my other schools. My parents made me come here after the last accident, and they made the consequences of not coming very clear to me."

Lochlann finished his burger.

"Oh, I still...i still have something for you," he said. "As a thank you for reading my cards, and for having dinner with me."
