Personality Description
Marina is that girl you hated in High School. She's a classic mean girl — head of the cheerleading team, only dates hot jocks and college boys, a massive trendsetter and a huge bully to nerds. If she ever seems slutty, vapid or downright mean, that's because... she is.
But this is because Marina was relentlessly bullied when she was younger. The other mean girls used to torture her and the boys used to harass her. She tried to stay quiet and unnoticed, but it didn't work, so she ended up depending on a messed up survival tactic: Instead of getting whipped, she would be the one whipping other people.
And it worked. Marina completely altered her entire personality when she entered High School. There, she learned that her greatest weapon was her beauty and her greatest shield was her popularity. Suddenly, nobody could touch her. Everybody bent over backwards to please her. It's the perfect backstory for the blonde popular girl like her in teenage movies.
Except for the fact that Marina eats boys.
Let me explain.
To say Marina's past was "complicated" would be an understatement. But her memory was wiped, and yet she couldn't ignore that she had an incredibly deep and subconscious hatred of men. She thought the desire was sexual at first, but when she ended up tasting their blood, she craved it more and more. She loved seeing men in pain. She loved eating their guts. She is perfectly aware that she has a problem, but it's so difficult to go cold turkey like trying to quit smoking. She came to Starlight Academy because she wanted to be able to control her "frenzied" states. But old habits die hard and Marina just really wants to eat a heart right now.
Powers
Mermaid's Requiem
Marina was born a mermaid, but due to an elaborate cycle of transformations (mermaid -> siren -> magical slave -> human), she has lost some inherent abilities most mermaids have and gained others such as:
a) Mermaid Physiology: Marina might have lost her tail and her gills, but like many mermaids, she is incredibly beautiful without exerting much effort (and she puts in a lot of effort). She has an attractive aura that makes people’s heads turn to her direction.
b) Siren’s Song: Due to her lover leaving her, Marina has learned to use her voice as a weapon. When she sings, she is able to control people’s minds to a degree, though she mostly has experience in making them sleep. When she screeches, it can make the ground shake and destroy property, but she loses her voice for a few days afterward.
Due to the fact that she had her memory erased, she can only do the singing part. Think of the screaming one as a latent power she can use under duress.
c) The Sorceror’s Last Breath: Marina was cursed to have human legs and eventually got her memory erased but she was given a chance to regain her mermaid tail again, if she learns to let go of the pain she endured.
d) Wrath of the Deep: Due to her subconscious hatred of men, Marina became a flesh eater. She is a magical creature, and whatever strong emotions influences magical creatures could alter their bodies. Ever since she started eating men, something inside her got corrupted and she could grow fangs and claws at will. During this bloodthirsty state, she is three times stronger and more agile, but it is incredibly difficult to change back until she feeds. Knocking her out usually calms her down.
Latent Mutations
Marina is at an uncertain point in her development. She’s not really anything at the moment, aside from a messy form of non-human. There are two ways this could go.
1) Mermaid - She grows as a person. She lets go of her hatred and regains her mermaid tail and gils. In this state, she will become immortal and she will have a song that can uplift and heal people, but she will lose the ability to frenzy.
2) Banshee - She turns worse. She lets her anger consume her and turns into a flesh-eating banshee. In this state, she will grow stronger and wilder, but she will permanently lose her mermaid properties - turns ugly and corrupt - and she can’t sing, only scream.
3) Permanent purgatory - Alternatively, she never changes and stays the way she is: A human with magical latent properties.
Biography
Thalassa was originally a mermaid spawned from sea foam some two thousand years ago.
She was a quiet child, curious and incredibly deliberate. While her sister mermaids would be preoccupied with matters of the ocean, Thalassa would dream of the surface. On her fourteenth birthday, when she was finally allowed to swim to the top of the ocean, she found herself lost with the wonders that new world presented - the bright overhead sun, thousands of stars piercing the night sky and curious creatures that danced with their odd, non-tail limbs. She would spend many nights hiding behind rocks and watching those creatures live their curious lives, until one day, a sailor found her.
It was love at first sight. The sailor, taken aback by this curious yet enchantingly beautiful creature, would work tirelessly every day to teach her his language. She met him halfway and learned from him. When the bridge had been made, they professed their love for each other. She would visit the pier night after night to meet with him, and they would kiss every time. The sailor was content with their meetings until one day, he wasn’t.
The sailor left her for a woman he could make love to. He broke the little mermaid’s heart, and so she would sing every night near the pier a song composed of the words the sailor used to confess his love to her. Days turned into months turned into years turned into decades, repeating her pattern that spanned several lifetimes that would surely kill a mortal man, but the mermaid believed that her lover will someday return to her if she continued to sing. Her earnest song became angrier and bitterer as time passed until her pure heart turned into pitch black. She stopped being able to swim deeper into the ocean, so she resigned to her new life: A siren.
She would sit with the sirens on their rocks, joining them in singing their angry, bitter songs. The lyrics would be different for each one but the tone would be the same. She was disgusted at herself, at how easily she fell into a human’s trap, at how he damned her to an eternity of pettiness and anger. She and her siren sisters would stop human ships just to see if their lovers were inside, but every time, there would be nothing, and their anger would force them to slit the throats of those on board. She continued with this life for centuries.
One day, as they sought to sink yet another ship, there was someone inside that was immune to the sirens’ song. It was a sorcerer who didn’t take too kindly to attempted murder. He killed her sisters and attempted to kill her too, but she surrendered.
He took her as his slave. He cursed her to have human feet that would feel like they were being pricked with needles every time she took a step. He claimed it was to be her punishment for attempting to murder him. He was a powerful sorcerer, so he lived for centuries, but he was not immortal and death was soon catching up to him. Sickness softened his heart. He removed the siren’s curse and allowed her to have stable feet. On his death bed, with his beloved siren on his side, he apologized to her and gave her a gift: He would grant her whatever wish she wanted.
She wanted to return to her mother, the ocean.
But she was plagued with anger and bitterness. Could she enjoy the ocean again if she tried to go back? Would the ocean accept her? No, it was too painful. She wished… to forget.
That was when her life as Marina Bellamy began. The sorcerer granted her wish with the last remains of his power and supplemented her memories with fake ones. She was suddenly living and aging like a perfectly normal middle schooler. A family immediately adopted the lost Marina Bellamy because she was beautiful and graceful.
Marina Bellamy was a quiet child, curious and incredibly deliberate. She was relentlessly bullied by the girls in her high school because of her beauty, and constantly harassed by the men for the same reason. For some reason, she had an innate fear and anger towards men that manifested into an odd desire.
On her first year in High School, she turned her life around. She used beauty as her weapon and popularity as her shield. She climbed the ranks of the student body sated her desires in the dark.
She thought the desire was for sex. It was nice, but it didn’t scratch the itch. One night, when she was in the throes of passion with her popular jock boyfriend, her desires took over and sharpened her teeth. She bit into his neck and ate him. For the first time in her life, she was happy and satisfied.
She hunted for more. She had a long string of lovers whom she dated and then ate. She became addicted to the feeling, so she sought to eat more and more… until she realized how demented she had become. She decided to see a therapist. When she got to her office, she was given a letter to Starlight Academy instead.
The cycle would continue. Marina continued to be lost, and under full moons, the ocean would continue to call for her child. On those rare nights, she would be at the beach, feet deep into the water, craving to return to the arms of her mother.
