It's like a never-ending chain of mailmen delivering mail to other mailmen

She nodded a little and waited for a moment and so but Emil Virtanen had nothing more to say after that. It made Berry wonder. Was that really all there was to his powers? Could it really be so simple, something as complicated as seeing the future? Maybe he was simply too used to his own powers, to the point where he was skimming over details that he took for granted.

"Does it seem like your visions have any sort of triggers?" Berry asked. "It seems odd that such a thing is totally random. Have you run any checks for that sort of thing? Audio or visual cues. I've never heard of anybody having the other senses as triggers but there's always a first for everything."

She tilted her head. "Did you attend the Academy? Know anybody who has a similar power?"

Apparently his refusal to volunteer further information that wasn't directly asked about had the desired effect, because she'd gone right back to yes or no questions. Even better, they were all ones he knew the answer to, and none of them needed elaboration.

He shifted his mail bag on his shoulders, giving a glance towards the next mailbox, and then shook his head in order. No, yes, no, no. He'd done his own little tests, and as far as he could tell they just happened. He saw things about people around him, but going near things didn't tend to trigger them. He could be walking up to a house, putting in the mail, and then walking away when he got the vision, so it wasn't as if moving close enough triggered it. Sometimes he even had visions about himself, and his own home, and they came as randomly as any other time. There was no sense to them, which had made them frustrating to come to terms with.

Well, while this was very interesting, it wasn't the slightest bit enlightening. Berry frowned to herself in thought. The simple answers were, at the very least, exact. She appreciated that but it did make the entire situation seem woefully underwhelming.

"Do your powers work for yourself?" That would serve to make life downright boring in Berry's opinion. With the parameters that the man had given her, however, his powers would be very potent indeed if he had that ability.

"Tell me about your family's history of powers, then," she said. "Even those unrelated to foresight. In addition, which areas have you lived in and where exactly can you trace back your family line?"

He hadn't realize it right away, but his powers did work on himself. Or at least, they worked on the area around him. More than once he'd stopped himself from burning the house down via a warning of a forgotten burner. So he nodded, letting out a little huff when he realized he was going to have to talk. She was just too curious. Too many questions.

"No powers. FInland." It was a struggle to keep things short, but there wasn't much to say. He was the only one in the family that was anything more than human, and they were Finnish as far back as they could trace. His mother had certainly looked into it when he'd first started showing signs, but there was nothing - not even rumors.

"How strange," Berry mused out loud. "No family history of powers, based in Finland -I'm not very familiar with Finnish mythology but I'm certain that there was great importance to birds, knots, and stars. I don't suppose anybody in your family was known to be particularly taken with those?" At least, Berry knew what her next subject of study would be. She wondered, though, if the magic wasn't in his blood, then could she attain that power for herself?

"If you didn't attend the Academy, then why did you come to the island? And how, exactly? Did your letter simply come late with an apology? You absolutely must tell me every part of it." It wasn't everyday that somebody just stumbled into a secret magical community, after all, let alone an uncharted one in the middle of the sea. Perhaps somebody noticed him and his warnings, which raised the question of why exactly he had been so obvious about it out there. It seemed like a really bad idea, to be honest. To the normal police, that sort of thing probably would have made him seem like some kind of serial stalker.

Ahh, why did it just keep going? He'd thought he'd seen people who were curious before, but it was nothing like this. She just kept going, and by that point she'd wandered off 'questions Emil thought about' and into 'questions Emil had never even considered'.

He shook his head to the first - none that he knew of - and then had to pause and consider the rest of her questions.

He supposed there were a lot of answers to to the first one, but explaining his whole history - the vampire he was looking for and all that - wasn't going to help answer any of hte other questions.

"No visions until later, so the letter didn't come until later." It felt like a mouthful - too many words, and increasing desire to just stop talking mid sentence. If she was paying attention, she'd be able to spot the muscles in his jaw tightening in anxiety, as he tried to push it down. His letter had just come - and he felt like he'd missed half her questions, only his stomach was squirming around and making it hard to think about things.

"Oh, a late bloomer, then?" Berry perked up at the new information, though she had the distinct feeling that maybe he had bothered to be more talkative, she would have learned this fact so much earlier. "I don't suppose you had any sort of traumatic incident at around the time that your visions started up? Details would be helpful, silence definitely in the reverse. Meet any interesting people at that point?"

She didn't notice any signs of distress on the man but that was, to be fair, because Berry was a bit of a strange character. Meaning that she and psychopathy tended to shake hands from time to time and wasn't looking or even thinking to look. As far as she was concerned, this line of questioning was completely logical and essentially endless so long as he continued to clam up.

He was indeed a late bloomer as far as everyone was concerned. It was possible - plausible even - that his powers would have manifested in his teens as they so often did, but were suppressed by the drugs he'd been on at the time. Even so, it was just as possible that the trauma was what caused his powers to manifest, as the visions had begun (however infrequently) not that long after his rescue.

"I was kidnapped and held hostage. For years. And then they came out." It was a record number of words for him as far as the conversation was concerned, but his voice was also a bit tight. He could talk about it at times - but when pushed for it like this, by someone who seemed to have no idea... well, it made him swirl with all sorts of unpleasant emotions, the most prominent of which was annoyance. He felt like someone had grabbed a shovel, barged into his backyard, and started digging up holes.

Some people would have found talking about past traumas to be incredibly awkward, especially when it dealt with subjects that were actual criminal in nature. Berry took the knowledge for what it was, breaking it down into a single block of substance in some greater equation of what is magic and how did this happen? Still, kidnapping in itself could have included any number of other factors. It certainly did seem like the trauma was the catalyst for his abilities but perhaps she wondered if it could have happened at that time without it, too.

"I don't suppose you have any siblings, do you? Or family members of a similar age?" Berry questioned. "And just how old are you, exactly? Down to the date and time, I mean." She had mentally placed him to be in his thirties or so but whether or not that was correct remained to be seen.

It was all too much. It was too many questions - and questions that were too personal, even for him. They were the kind of questions someone who was looking to steal his identity would want to know. All of a sudden he was questioning the things he'd said, and wondering if he'd already told her too much. She knew his job. Had he said his name? She knew his powers. She knew a great deal about him, and the more he thought about it, the more nervous he got. He took a step back, pulling his bag close to his chest and swallowing hard.

"Need to go." He blurted out, eyes quickly flicking back to the street. He could probably run for it, but... well, he wasn't much of a runner. All of a sudden he wished he had decided to take those self defense classes, even if his 'opponent' was an unintimidating girl. It was her behavior more than anything else that was weirding him out, and unless she stopped him, he was going to try and quickly get away from her.
