Personality Description

Hari built his entire personality to be the exact opposite of his power. He has the power of death, but he is more in love with life and all it has to offer. Hari has a huge fascination with the Arts, Philosophy, Botany and Medicine. His isolation made him pursue many hobbies, such as the typical ones like reading, drawing, writing, sewing and composing to atypical ones such as preserving dead animals and making dolls he thinks are cute but other people think are creepy and morbid.

Outwardly, he is always gentle, patient and kind even when he is dealing with difficult people. That doesn’t mean he’s never tempted to raise his voice, but when he gets the urge to do so, he thinks of how his mother was always gentle to him and how that made a huge impact on his life.

To some people, he might come off as perfect and good, but when he talks, he’s superfluous and closed off. He never lets anyone close enough to know what’s going on with him. He’s afraid of intimacy, but ironically, craves it the most.

Ultimately, Hari is an idealist and a romantic that’s constantly stifled by trauma and fear. He’s a huge repressed dam that’s threatening to break.

There are two ways to get by in life: surviving and living, and recently Hari is leaving behind his old ways of simply ‘surviving’ and learning how to actually ‘live’. This means Hari is undergoing a massive personality shift.

On the surface level, Hari is more or less the same. He’s a model student, a talented artist and an overall sweetheart. He’s gentle and polite to everybody he meets, and he tries to foster good relationships with the people around him. He is often treated as a motherly figure by those he meet as a result.

But the context of his kindness is incredibly different. When before he used it as a method to push people away and live vicariously through the personality of his mother, Hari is learning that he’s internalized that kindness. Hari believes that every creature deserves respect and the benefit of the doubt. That doesn’t mean he always has to be patient with them, though. He believes that there are some actions that shouldn’t be excused, and when being antagonized, he bites back or expresses his annoyance instead of wilting under the other person’s more dominant personality.

Hari is a terrible know-it-all. It’s a side effect of being treated as a star pupil in school and always living up to the expectations of his teachers. He tries to keep an open mind and prefers to talk over situations instead of screaming at people, but when that fails, he assumes a stubborn and unrelenting stance. Hari will always default into thinking that he knows better than most people, when in truth his book knowledge and quick learning ability haven’t prepared him to face the real world in the slightest.

Hari is also learning that he’s incredibly expansive and reckless to a fault. It’s one of those things that manifested during his time as a sickly monster that killed everything he touched. He likes to do things to test what he can and can’t do, and to explore his own emotional reactions.

This bad habit got magnified tenfold when he discovered he was healthy enough to pursue even grander expeditions. Hari is easily enticed by the prospect of adrenaline and adventure, and he’s developing a rather clever and manipulative streak along the way. He isn’t afraid to do ‘new things’ anymore, and this is good because he’s a notorious idealist. Hari is able to pursue his visions of helping people now rather than keeping them an idle fantasy. But coupled with his tendency to believe he is so much more capable than he actually is, and you get someone that does dangerous things without thinking he could ever be harmed.

Hari grew up thinking he would die at twenty, either through sickness or through suicide, so his personality was stunted for the longest time. He never anticipated that he’d ever get cured. He’s still learning what he likes, what he doesn’t like, where he wants to go in life and what his personality really is. Maybe he’ll mature. Maybe he’ll settle down. Maybe he’ll turn into an adventurer or pursue his younger dream of being a doctor. But at least this time, he’s looking forward to what’s going to happen. The future doesn’t seem too bleak to him anymore.

Powers

Life drain - Hari LITERALLY drains the life of everything he comes into skin contact with. For the first five seconds, he drains their energy. After that, their life. The living organism will start decaying incredibly fast. Have you ever seen one of those videos where they speed up the life of an animal or a plant until its death? Just like that, but in real life.

That ‘life force’ all goes into Hari whose ailments will begin to be cured depending on how much energy he drains. He can cure a fever by draining the life of a bush and prolong his life by years by draining the life of a young human. It’s a passive effect, but he can touch things normally if he concentrates really hard.

Weaknesses? First, Hari hates his power and avoids using it. Second, if he doesn’t regularly drain something, he will begin to deteriorate. His steady conviction to ‘not take the easy way out’ means he’s living on a healthy diet and exercise, but his body is still really weak and gets sicklier by day. In fact, it's primarily the reason his eyes are so bad. Think of his body’s life force and defense mechanisms as a feeding organism, and it won’t function well if it doesn’t feed… and Hari doesn’t let it.

HARI POWERS UPDATE as of May 24 2015

Although it hasn’t been revealed yet in-character, the reason for Hari’s powers is because a mystical tree possessed him when he was younger — the same tree that shriveled up in the forest and healed him of his disease. The tree was aging quickly and it knew it was going to die soon. It decided to form a mutual co-habitation with Hari in his body so they could both live. His life drain powers are, in fact, the tree’s attempt to keep them both healthy, but Hari’s steadfast insistence to not use them led to him and Hari dying a slow, steady death.

That is, until Hari met Sebastian Grey. Sebastian’s draining powers formed into a massive pool of energy inside him that Hari fed off of. When he took the energy, became healthy for the first time in years, and developed a more positive outlook, the tree began to grow inside him.

Whether he likes it or not, Hari now has access to the tree’s powers.

Shapeshifting into Wood: Hari will be able to shift his body parts into wood, but any more than limbs and his chest will have him in danger of losing his sanity and giving in to become a tree. He won’t necessarily die. He’ll just fall into a deep slumber. If he becomes a tree, he would fall into a deep depression with no motivation to turn back. It would take weeks before anyone would be able to wake him up. Once he turns back, he will get incredibly sick.

Plant Communication: Hari won’t be able to strike up conversations with plants per se, but he would instinctively know what they need and what paths they could give him. It would be impossible for Hari to get lost in a forest and they can even tell him about hidden caches or trees with delicious fruit. Similarly, if the plants call out to him — someone started a forest fire or something — the call would be overwhelming and compelling. Each individual leaf would be screaming into his head all at once. It’s a mutual communication thing.

Photosynthesis: Hari will be able to sustain himself with just water and sunlight. He can go without eating or sleeping at this point as long as he stays hydrated under the sun. But this has a drawback – if he’s been in the shade for more than two days, he’ll start feeling weak and depressed. Keep him in the shade for a week and he’ll die. He can also produce oxygen now and he breathes carbon dioxide.

Plant-based aging: Because he only needs photosynthesis to survive, Hari would be able to live for as long as he wants. He can technically stop his aging right now and pick it up fifty years later. He can’t turn back, though. If he stops aging at 31, he can’t go back to looking like he’s 19 again.

Magical Sensitivity to the Earth: Hari now has a striking affinity with the earth. If he ever wants to study alchemy or druidism, he’ll find that they will be easy to learn but he will have to learn them still.

Update for Life Drain: Hari is now fully in control of life drain. He can drain as slowly or as quickly as he likes or not at all. His health is not based on Life Drain anymore, but in Photosynthesis.

Weaknesses: Fire. If his skin comes into contact with fire, he is in DANGER of burning like a plant would. His reflexes are also massively dulled now. He’ll find that time seems to move faster and he can barely keep up.

Biography

Hari spent his early childhood in New Delhi with his corporate Japanese father and lower caste Hindi mother. They lived pretty comfortably there until his dad’s small company went bankrupt and he was forced to cut his losses and return to Japan with his kid and wife.

They were poor, heavily in debt and, worst of all, shamed. His dad dwindled into alcoholism and his mother did her best to support their family. Hari became sicklier because of their poor living conditions.

One day, when he was eight, he was wrought with a dangerous fever. He was afraid of inconveniencing his parents because of his condition so he hobbled into the forest at the back of their house hoping, he supposed, for death to finally claim him. His six-year old body couldn’t handle the pain and dizziness for too long so he collapsed under a large tree.

When he awoke, he found himself magically cured… but the tree that supported him was rotten and shriveled. It startled him so he ran back to their house, nervous and shaking at the threat of possible danger.

His mother was asleep on the front porch waiting for him. When she caught sight of him, she ran up to him and hugged him tightly and then she collapsed.

He drained all the energy from her weak body.

She died a few weeks after.

They buried her in the local cemetery. From that day onward, it was just him and his father. They both knew he was his mother’s murderer and neither of them could forgive him. His father treated him like a wild beast, constantly referring to him as "the devil-child" and cursing the day he bore a child with a heathen woman. He moved Hari's room to his basement and fed him scraps twice a day.

It took a while for Hari to adjust to his new life in isolation. He lose his appetite and zest for life, and he became angry at his parents, the world and every god watching him suffer and doing nothing. He would spend evenings just banging on the door screaming and begging to be let out until eventually... eventually, he stopped fighting.

He decided to pursue his hobbies there, spending most of his waking hours dreaming of bluer skies.

When he got his letter at ten years old, his dad was more than happy to send him away. Hari spent most of his life in Starlight Academy, and for him, it’s the closest thing to home.
