Lochlann was beaming.

He knew he wasn't really fooling her. She'd be able to tell that his emotions were still a little suppressed, but he was throwing himself whole hardheartedly into this. His tiredness was transforming into a kind of mania.

He would make this night better for her.

He led her out the door and to the outside.

"You should try going on adventures," he said, and when he saw a shiny coin lying on the ground, Lochlann picked it up. It would be perfect.

"Heads is left, tails is right," he told her.

He gave her the coin to flip.

"What way are we going, Emily?"

Emily was rapidly dragged through the building and outside. She could taste his enthusiasm trying to mask the rest of the things he was feeling. She could sense a bit of dread underneath it, and the guilt that had been coating him since he arrived, but little else.

"S-Slow down... Y-You're taller then me..." Em suppressed a giggle as Lochlann exited the building with her, looking around and taking in the night air. "I-I don't know if... I c-could have an adventure... Too o-often... I-I think that... The excitement might frazzle me... A-A little..."

She stared at the coin, turning it over in her hand a couple times before settling it on her thumb. "O-Okey..." A metallic ting resounded through the air as the coin spun upward. Emily stuck out her palm to catch it, but when it should have landed it bounced off her hand instead.

She attempted to catch it, making some cute, panicked noises as it danced out of her hands again. The coin hit the pavement and rolled away, disappearing into some foliage. Emily sheepishly looked back at Lochlann. "U-Umm... I-I guess that means... Forward..? O-Or maybe backward..."

"Sorry," Lochlann said, giving her an apologetic smile. Sometimes, he could forget the height difference and speed. Everything felt slow to him when he was used to having four legs--but simultaneously too fast. Time was measured here.

Lochlann considered this.

"It might," he concurred. "But you'll never know until you try it."

When she flipped the coin and it landed upright and then rolled away, Lochlann laughed.

"Forward it is," he agreed, and looked both ways before he took her hand again and headed across the street. The night made the island seem different, and Lochlann believed it actually made it seem bigger. In the daytime, the horizon reminded him that he was trapped and boxed in, but at night? They could go anywhere.

When they'd gone a while, Lochlann mentally assigned numbers in his head: 1-5 would be left, 6-10 would be right.

"Pick a number between 1-10," he told her.

"I-I guess so... L-Let's see how this... This o-one goes... First..." She glanced up and down the street as Lochlann erged her across. It seemed kind of silly since it really only directed them ten feet or so. She guessed that was just the rules of this adventure though.

"... Um..." She tilted her head slightly and looked upwards as she thought about the simple question. "I pick... F-Four..." Lochlann darted off to the left, pulling Em on with him with a bit of a start. She stumbled along next to him for a little bit, her eyes lightling up with an innocent excitement before long. "I-I think there's a... H-Hotdog stand o-over here... Sometimes... Can w-we go there..? S-Should we..?"

"It's your adventure," Lochlann grinned at her. "You tell me where to go. Hot dog stand it is."

He didn't let go of her hand. He was enjoying this excuse to hold it, to have some fun that was innocent and free of ghosts or death or sexual tension. He walked besides her, more mindful of the pace since she'd called him out on it earlier.

His emotions were still simply gratitude and tiredness, but there was no escaping the unexpected feeling that Lochlann was having now.

He was having fun.

She hoped he was, too.

When they approached the hot dog stand, Lochlann asked her, "What do you want on yours? I'm paying. Absolutely no arguing. It's your birthday adventure."

"U-Um... A-Alright... Then hot dogs..!" She stepped out in front, taking the lead from Lochlann as she searched for the stand. It didn't take long to find, she knew the general area it was usually stationed.

She stopped nearby the stand so they could decide on things. When questioned about toppings she began licking her lips over and over, her expression turning to serious concentration. "O-Onions won't work... Maybe p-peppers... Definitely peppers... Sauerkraut maybe... And m-mustard... A-And sweet relish..."

She smiled at Lochlann when she seemed to finish deciding. "Th-Thanks... This is r-really nice..." If the adventure ended here, Em would probably be content. She took her hot dog from Lochlann once it was ready and slowly took a bite, savoring the tastes.

Lochlann could not reasonably talk about what tasted good or bad to humans. When he was first starting out in school, his parents coached him to observe how others ate.

It was the most nerve wracking experience of his life. He was expected he have questions about what he liked and what he disliked. His first time in a cafeteria, Lochlann had seen more food than he had in his entire life. America was an interesting place. You could starve to death while surrounded by food because sheer number of choices was overwhelming.

Despite this, Emily's combination struck a bell as a little unusual. Then again, Lochlann had eaten a full grown man and left nary a trace. Who was he to say what tasted good?

His own hot dog was relatively plain--ketchup, mustards, relish. It was what his brother suggested Lochlann get when he asked Lawrence for advice when he school was planning on taking the students to a baseball game. Lochlann's family had moved after one of his classmates mysteriously drowned.

He was still thinking about drowning when he realized he was remarkably hungry, and not just for a hot dog. He could barely touch it because he'd just watched Emily slide the hot dog past her lips and

Wow

That was

Oddly hot.

Lochlann swallowed and said, “Where to next, Emily?”

"Hmm?" Emily glanced back up at Lochlann. She had a small bit of sauerkraut stuck just above her upper lip. She licked her lips again, just missing the wayward food, and looked away sheepishly.

"I-I guess... This m-must seem like... A-An odd combination... Huh..? I c-can't help it... I-I have to account for... O-Other flavors... It c-can ruin perfectly g-good... Food f-for me... If I-I'm not careful..."

She fidgeted a little bit, feeling a little embarrassed by her eating habits. Her self-consciousness was forgotten pretty quickly when her thoughts were turned towards the next destination.

"I-I don't know... M-Maybe we should walk m-more... While we e-eat... Maybe we'll see something fun..." She began walking they way they had been heading again, occasionally taking another bite of her hotdog until it was gone.

"Far be it from me to tell you what tastes good," Lochlann gave her a grin. "So if relish...sauerkraut...hot dog fiesta hell...is what tastes good for you, enjoy it."

Lochlann thought about asking her if she wanted to know what he tasted like.

He pushed that thought away.

He was happy to just walk with her during the night, occasionally stopping to take another bite or two of his own hot dog, and then eventually wiping his hands on the napkins. When they were both finished, he took their trash to discard it.

"Emily," Lochlann said suddenly. "Can I ask you to trust me just a little bit?"

He flinched after he said that.

"I mean, normally trusting me is a bad idea, but I have a specific plan that does not involve anything more than me blindfolding you so you don't know where we're going," he said. "If that makes you uncomfortable we don't have to. But i want to surprise you."

Emily licked her lips again, finally getting the bit of sauerkraut off her face. "... Th-THanks... P-People don't a-always... Understand..." She smiled up at him. Lochlann was always so nice about everything. After they had walked several more steps she realized she was still staring at him and quickly turned away, her face flushing pink yet again.

She shook her head slightly and looked back to him. She licked her lips with a slight look of confusion. "... W-Why wouldn't I... T-Trust you Lochlann..." She smiled up at him, sliding her hand back into his. "... I... I l-like surprises... Y-You know... I think y-you might be... M-My best friend here... Now th-that I think about it..."
