Name: “Goodall”
Age: 79 years (a young adult, as far as its species is concerned)
Birthday: June 8, 1936
Gender: Male
Species: Some kind of four-spatial-dimension-occupying creature whose species has no name and whose shape cannot be comprehended. Alternatively: "tentacle monster"
Category: Academy Faculty
Class: College
Subject/Work: Adjunct Professor, teaches Linear Algebra

Appearance Description: Goodall’s complete true form exists in more than three spatial dimensions and is incomprehensible to most humans. What humans will be able to detect of Goodall is his tentacles, which he can extend into the three-dimensional plane where Manta Carlos exists. The tentacles are light blue in appearance and covered in a thin layer of clear, viscous slime. Due to Goodall’s extradimensional nature, he can vary the size of his tentacles; the same tentacle could appear to be as thin as a pinky or as wide as a slender human’s torso. The tentacles seem to enter our three-dimensional space through darkened, translucent “holes” in reality which bend light like funhouse mirrors. Goodall usually has around 120 tentacles, but they are usually hidden in a pocket of extradimensional space, along with its main body.

Personality Description: Goodall is an extremely intelligent and unusually caring example of his species. He believes that all (sufficiently intelligent) life is sacred, and abhors any kind of killing or torture of creatures that he believes qualify as intelligent. Goodall is also a naiive creature; he believes that his species and humanity could learn a lot from each other and could benefit from mutual cooperation and communication. He believes that his work has the potential to make the world a much better place, and that’s all that he really wants: to leave the world better than it was when he hatched, and to leave anything better than it was when he found it.

Furthermore, Goodall is inquisitive and adventurous. He likes to try and learn new things, and to remove itself from its "comfort zone." His already extensive research into the world of three-dimensional creatures and human communication is a testimony to this. Finally, Goodall is humble, never wanting to brag about its academic accomplishments and never willing to rest on his laurels, constantly striving to improve himself.

Powers / Species Abilities:

Extradimensional existence: To understand what it’s like to be Goodall, imagine that you have found a two-dimensional world occupied by two-dimensional triangular creatures. These creatures exist on something like the surface of a pool of still water. You can look at them from above and see not only their outer shells (the edges of the triangles) but also inside of the triangles. The triangle creatures, however, cannot see inside of each other so easily: they can only see each other’s edges. Furthermore, the flat triangle creatures cannot see you; they can only see things on their flat plane of existence. They only have length and width. Concepts like “depth” or “above” are incomprehensible for their two-dimensional existence in their two-dimensional world. They can only see you if, for example, you stick your finger through the two-dimensional plane where they exist. Then, they would see your finger as being something like a circle; they would only be able to perceive the cross-section of your finger where it intersects with their two-dimensional world.

We are three-dimensional creatures. Goodall exists in four dimensions. He can see around, through, and into everything in any three-dimensional space that he’s observing at the time. He could observe a room without existing in it, only extending its tendrils into the room when he feels like it. Due to his four-dimensional shape, he can change the size of his tentacles by changing how much of his four-dimensional limbs he’s extending into our three-dimensional space at a given time.

So Many Tentacles: Goodall has over 100 tentacles to extend into our world. He can grow even more than that on short notice if he feels like it, and cutting off or damaging these limbs does very little damage to him; this would only cause a small and annoying amount of pain.

Contact Telepathy: Goodall’s species primarily communicates by intertwining their tentacles in four-dimensional space and, by touching each other, communicating telepathically. They have no need for language; entire ideas, pictures, and experiences can be exchanged in seconds. Goodall’s species has no need for writing, either; they instead have objects that they can use to store experiences or ideas as telepathic messages.

Goodall can only do this to a limited degree with most humanoid creatures. Goodall cannot send any kind of telepathic message to most humans, and he can only read emotions and sensory information from any human it happens to be touching.

Biography: Goodall was born in the last two years of a war. If his species used languages or words, they might call it The Last Great War. Most of the sum of his species’ knowledge was razed and most of their population annihilated. This was only the most recent war in a ten-thousand-year era of war and destruction. Nobody is left who even remembers why they were fighting, who the different factions were, or even how many factions there were.

Today, Goodall is part of a collective of tentacle-creatures who took it upon themselves to accrue as much knowledge as possible, either by rediscovering the old ways or by using scientific methods to create new knowledge. Goodall is doing the latter, by studying the simple three-dimensional creatures on Manta Carlos Island. He has already received great awards and praise for his progress in understanding human language. His next project will be to live among the creatures of Manta Carlos to better understand their society and behavior.

A Note about Goodall’s Research into Human Communication: Before Goodall investigated the humans’ behavior from ‘above,’ and took extensive notes, nobody in his species thought that humans could communicate in any meaningful way. Goodall understands some very basic tenets of grammar and syntax, and even knows a few words, but still isn’t good enough to carry on a proper conversation. However, Goodall doesn’t think this is very important. By observing gestures like kisses and handshakes, Goodall came to believe that humans are also capable of some contact telepathy; like others of its species, it can’t really imagine a system of communication based entirely on sound waves.

Update: Goodall has learned that shoving a tentacle in someone's mouth is extremely rude, and does not help him communicate with the humans. He has spent a year getting better at communicating with humanoids. In Fall 2016 he will begin working for the Academy as a hall parent and adjunct professor. He still doesn't understand currency though.
