This was the right place, right? She didn't want to look like a complete fool on her first day at the academy. She headed to the admissions office as she was told. Of course, "fool" might not have been the first word that came to mind when people saw her. This was due to the fact she was accompanied by fearsome-looking bodyguards. They dressed in matching uniforms and had a certain intimidation factor to them. They weren't the kind that hung out with celebrities either; no, these people looked like the real deal. They could and would kick the butt of whoever approached the princess the wrong way. She didn't want to have them on her, especially since it could leave a bad impression on the other students, but her parents insisted. There was the possibility that she could get into trouble while travelling from the mansion to the admissions office.

The guards stood along the door and waited for the princess to enter first. The ones ahead already scanned for any potential threats. Despite her frustration, she put on her best smile and stepped into the office with elegance. It was natural for her to play the role of the classic princess; one could make a joke that she was a few minutes away from a Disney song sequence. However, she paused after entering the location. It was fairly spacious with various seats for people to sit in as they waited, and there was a large counter with at least three paper holders filled with pamphlets. Where did she need to go to check in? She was unsure.

Figuring that the people at the desk would know better than the people waiting, the princess stepped over and spoke with a gentle but audible voice.

"Excuse me, I am here to check in."

Xun Zhen Lin

Somebody was burning a fire somewhere; Xun could feel it itching at his shoulder blades and up the nape of his neck. It was far enough away to be bearable but at the same time, he couldn't help but cringe every now and again as the flames licked right down through his skin and down to the bones. It was an illusion, or maybe that wasn't the best word for it. The pain wasn't an illusion at all.

After having sat there at the admissions desk for an hour or so, Xun gave in and reached for a bag of pills. Baby aspirin wasn't really the best painkiller to deal with this sort of a situation but it was easy, and he knew that he couldn't overdose on it. After two or three or, say, a dozen, he stopped being able to tell the difference between using it and leaving it off but the placebo effect was a funny circumstance to live by. It just made him feel better about everything, that was all.

In any case, he could at least greet new students with a slightly more polite smile now, and had just finished putting away the bag when a new girl walked into the office. It took him a moment to place her, however. The serious-faced men in suits around her were like waves crashing against the cliffs of an island. He could focus on her all he'd like but his attention would still be taken up by her protectors, to some extent.

Vaguely, a memory came up in the back of his mind. Maybe several, actually, but if that was the case, they had all blurred together. Xun was certain that in at least one previous life, he had assassinated somebody guarded just like this, right in broad daylight on a public street. It was hard but doable. Even more so now that guns existed, and that was only if the attacker was concerned with getting away alive.

Those were such awful things to think.

"Ah, new to the island, Miss?" Xun asked with a smile, even though he knew the answer. No matter who the person was, the bodyguards tended to melt away after staying on the island long enough. "Did the letter come for you or did you make an inquiry? If you contacted us ahead of time, we should already have a bit of information for your file."

Xia had no way of knowing the past of anyone besides herself and her family. Recent events in her past led her to be aware of certain issues. Issues which she had to address but struggled with doing so. Maybe the academy could help with some of that. While that wasn't the main objective (family's main objective anyway), it was something for the princess to keep in mind as she spent her days in classes. The guards stayed on alert, but their presence would likely be unnecessary. However, they did find the appearance of the man that answered the princess strange. He had a wonderful voice though.

Xia nodded and flashed a smile at the man. She grew curious as to why she couldn't see most of his face, but it was impolite to question one's appearance.

"Correct. My family made an inquiry right before we moved here."

The Zhujiang did not skimp out on planning. Presumably the letter was for those unaware of the island's existence, but being in the non-human realm of information had its perks. She brushed a bit of hair away from her face. After close observation, she realized that his left eye was eyeing her bodyguards. He definitely was giving her attention, but the men in suits were distracting. Her eyes gazed back at her guards and then at him.

"Sorry for making such a fuss. My parents insisted that I bring guards with me."

And for admittedly good reasons too, even if they were a little misguided.

Xun Zhen Lin

"Oh, no, it's quite all right. You wouldn't be the first." Although she received points for being one of the most intimidating. "If you would please give me a moment please?" Xun turned his attention back to the monitor in front of him, bringing up an alphabetical list of recent inquiries. Since she had mentioned family rather than parents, the man assumed that meant the inquiry would likely be for many siblings, not just herself. Cousins, too, perhaps.

He clicked on the columns a few times. Though the girl was obviously Southeast Asian, that hardly meant anything. The population in that area was massive so it was only logical that they also had quite a number of students from there as well. Still, most people wouldn't be able to afford guards like this. Now, what's a large supernatural family that's rich, Asian, and paranoid? The names rolled out before him: Gimhae Song, Hebei Li, Ishikawa, Saitou, Shaanxi Du, Xun, among others. Then, peeking out at the very end was a familiar name that Xun Zhen Lin had not seen in quite a long time.

"Would you be Zhujiang Xia or Zhujiang Bai?" The man guessed, glancing back at the girl. There were quite a few folders under that clan name, all of which were only sparsely filled at best. Some of them were simply empty. None of them had pictures. He tried to recall what little information he had retained about the Zhujiang over the lifetimes but all that really came up was merely from his current one. They were dragons. The Xun did not often communicate with them.

Xia had a large number of siblings and cousins. While she only knew about her parents and siblings moving here, she wouldn't be surprised if some of the branch families chose to move here as well. Some of her cousins might be interested in attending Starlight Academy after all. The girl nodded in agreement at the faculty member's request. She waited patiently as he pulled up her files. She wasn't sure how he was able to conclude much from what she said. She didn't know how the system worked or what he was thinking.

After a while, he uttered two names. One was hers while the other was her younger sister's. Ah yes, Bai needed to check in too. She wondered why her little sister didn't accompany her. Then again, she might have been sick again. Ah well. Illness really sucked; Xia knew that first hand.

"Xia, sir. Zhujiang Bai is my younger sister."

While she was certainly the diplomat and traveled around, that didn't mean she instantly knew the identities of all large and rich Asian families, let alone specific members from them. In fact, she had varying degrees of communication with her own family. The clan was so fast that she could be talking to a distanced relative and have literally no idea about it.

"Is there any additional information you need from me?"

She wasn't entirely sure of everything that was included within the files. She didn't know if anything of her recent past would pop up. In all honesty, she wanted to keep the knowledge to a minimum. She hoped that she wouldn't run into a case of everyone on the island somehow knowing about her being kidnapped. That could set herself up for some nasty reminders.

Xun Zhen Lin

"Ah, that would make us distantly related then," Xun remarked, mentally marking down yet another section of the family as having made landfall. "Xiajie" -because she was certainly older than he was, even if it didn't seem like it- "if you don't mind, I would need a picture for the records and then there's a bit of paperwork to get out of the way. Course selection, too, if you if you would like to start classes as soon as possible. Depending on your schooling, however, you may have to take a few placements to get everything sorted out correctly."

He laid out the forms on the counter as as he spoke, along with a pen. The questions on them were basic, things such as name, birth date, ethnicity, species, and home address and contact numbers. If she was already in college, then there were a few that asked after her prior courses and major selection. "Any language will do. The papers are spelled to automatically make every language comprehensible," Xun told her. And of course, if she reverted to Chinese, that was his native tongue.

"If you have any special circumstances that you would like us to know, that would be helpful as well." Such as the bodyguards. If she was going to bring them everywhere, it would be nice for her to write that down so everybody would have prior warning. "Though files for you and some of your family members exist, there is very little to be found on them besides your names."

What a coincidence! She didn't expect to be working with someone related to her. Of course they were distantly related, but this was still quite the coincidence. He explained that he required more paperwork from her due to the lack of information that was on the file. She would also need to take a picture. Xia had no problems with these requests and politely nodded as he continued. She made eye contact to assure him that she was paying close attention. The forms were laid out on the counter in front of her. The moment a pen was provided, she picked it up and started on the first page.

She froze before marking anything. Was she supposed to write this in English? She wasn't sure until he noted that she could write in whatever language she wanted. It was for this reason that she started writing in Chinese, her native language. Being so familiar with it, it was easier than writing in English. The princess made delicate strokes with her pen. Her handwriting was exquisite. As she wrote out the information on the forms, she proceeded to talk to Xun Zhen Lin once more. This time she spoke in her native language, but the universal translator spell on the school campus made it a mute point anyway.

"Where do I take the picture?"

The young lady finished writing everything down. The family had an address within Manta Carlos City in one of the large mansions of the residential district. Most of her schooling was via tutors, but she did in fact attend college before Starlight Academy and had a number of credits accumulated already. She also did note the condition about the bodyguards. In accordance to her parents' wishes, she was to be shielded at all times by at least a few bodyguards that would be posted somewhere nearby. While it was unlikely the academy would allow the kidnapping of a student on their campus, the Zhujiangs wanted her to be extra safe.

"Hopefully this should help. Anything else you need?"

Xun Zhen Lin

Xun Zhen Lin glanced over her filled sheet briefly, picking out the most important words. He dearly hoped that she would be all right on campus with those bodyguards following her around -not because of any danger to herself, though. As long as she stayed out of the forbidden forest, it was highly unlikely she would find any real trouble around the school. No, what he was worried about was that she would be very isolated from the rest of the student body. Even knowing that she was most likely much older than him, the fact that she still appeared young was something that he had difficulty getting over.

It would have been rude to start nit-picking on that, though. Probably. She probably knew better than him, which felt. Kind of sad, actually.

"Oh, you can take the picture right here," he said in Mandarin, fumbling for a moment with a stuck drawer. Getting it open and removing the small camera inside seemed to take an eternity. As if it would help him with his anxiety, he rambled, "We normally just take them against that wall over there. It's very quick."

Her question of whether or not she needed to provide anything more did stop him for a few panicked seconds. "For the school, I think that's everything I need from you now. I do have a course selection packet for you, though. We could hardly force you to decide your entire schedule right this moment but it would be nice to get it back by next week."

"Besides that-" Did he even dare ask? He had already started to in any case so he might as well. "I've been rather out of contact with my own family, let alone Zhujiang." That was a roundabout way of asking how things were.

Admittedly, the bodyguard arrangement was more her parents' choice than hers; she just indulged their desires by agreeing to it. The reality was the parents were very worried about someone kidnapping their daughter. After what just happened not too long ago, it wasn't a completely baseless concern. She waited patiently for him to take out the camera. The girl checked her hair. Yep, it was neat, and there were no loose strands. She crossed her legs once more and focused on him. Perhaps that would just make him even more nervous, but that wasn't her intention.

He mentioned a course selection packet. Yes, as a college student she had the freedom to pick her courses. Of course the wise choice would be to complete the rest of her requirements; after all, she did want to get her bachelor's degree. Beyond that she felt pretty sure that she would no longer be attending classes and instead be out doing her princess duties full-time. While figuring that she would continue being a diplomat, she wondered who would acquire the mantle of heir. While many clans did it on basis of the first born, there was a certain process with the Zhujiang clan that made it possible for it to go to someone else.

That didn't really concern her right now though — Xun had another question that was more personal. At first she looked at him with confusion before realizing what he was attempting to communicate.

"Oh, well, the clan's doing well for the most part. We're adjusting to the change of scenery really. Certain....events required us to move."

Despite the pause she kept smiling, though mentally she was now suffering flashbacks and trying so desperately not to let it show.

"How have you been? It's lovely to find a distant relative here."

Yeah, switch the question around. That should help.
