Name: Esmeralda “Envy” Lopez
Age: 18 years
Birthday: January 2nd, 1997
Gender: Female
Category: Student
Class: College First-Year, major undeclared

Appearance Description: Esmeralda’s appearance varies wildly; she is a shapeshifter, after all. Her usual form is that of a conventionally attractive Hispanic woman with full, dark, wavy shoulder-length hair, and with a height between 5’6 and 5’10 depending on which outfit she decides to wear that day; she frequently adjusts her body each morning to fit her clothes. Her clothes are generally fashionable, when she isn’t in a uniform.

Personality Description: Esmeralda has a bit of a sadistic streak. She enjoys using her power to humiliate people, especially when those people are in any sort of position of social superiority. Whether they’re the class president, or the head of some club, or popular, or smarter or more athletic or talented than everyone else, Envy instinctually doesn’t like them.

Envy realizes that this isn’t a healthy or productive way to express her patron sin, as she might describe it. She believes that her sin shouldn’t even be a sin, that everyone experiences it all the time, and that it makes the world a better place. Without envy, how would anyone strive for greatness? We would all be content little losers living off of gardens or farms or whatever, never really striving for anything more than that. Because we want what we don’t have, we make plans to get what we don’t have. We make technology, we reach for the stars, and we achieve greatness because we envy. Envy herself wants to become rich by her own hands, and to become talented at a wide variety of things, because she wants to do better than other people who are doing well.

Envy envies people whose personalities and instincts aren’t defined by a single concept, such as “Envy.” She dislikes her family, and wishes that she had a family that wasn’t dysfunctional or defined by this ridiculous ‘seven sins’ shtick. The only reason she hasn’t run away is she knows herself too well; she would just start to envy people whose families actually understand them, because her new one invariably wouldn’t.

Esmeralda likes to hang out with people who, as far as she can tell, aren’t especially cool or popular or talented. These are the only kinds of people who don’t set her off. She can be perfectly nice and friend-like with these people, because, though she hates to admit to thinking of it this way, she feels like she’s already better than all of them. She doesn’t have to try to bring them down or out-do them in any way, and for just a few moments at a time she can feel normal and adequate. Otherwise, her life is a constant whirlwind of misery and struggling to keep up with everyone else.

Powers:
Body Swapping: Esmeralda can trade bodies with anyone else she can see, within about a football field’s distance of her. Her mind will control the target’s body, and her target’s mind will start to control her own body.

Occasionally, this will also give Esmeralda access to any magical powers her target might have and prevent her target from using them in her own body, though this is entirely dependent on how said magical powers work. If they work because of how the target’s body works, she can usually borrow those, but she will probably be bad at using them. If they work because of something the target learned, she can’t borrow them, and her target would probably still have access to it. Any power Esmeralda steals in this way can only be hers for up to five minutes, or until she shape-shifts into a form different from that of the body she stole.

Esmeralda’s body-stealing is only temporary. For the first hour or so after Esmeralda has stolen somebody’s body, or until she shape-shifts or steals a different person’s body, Esmeralda can un-steal her target’s body without even looking at them. Otherwise, if an hour passes without her choosing to do this, her target (in Esmeralda’s body) will begin to re-assume their original form, gradually, over the next half-hour. Esmeralda cannot steal the same person’s body more than twice in the same six-day period. If Envy’s target dies during that up-to-an-hour-long window, Envy will fall into a coma.

Shapeshifting: Esmeralda can give her body any human features she has ever seen or stolen. For example, if she sees a girl with a nice butt, she can make herself have a butt almost exactly like that if she feels like it, along with the legs of some other girl and the breasts of a different girl entirely. If she steals the body of the girl with the nice butt for even a few seconds, she can make any part of her body become exactly like nice butt girl’s was at the time she stole it.

Esmeralda can assume features of supernatural or nonhuman creatures, such as wings, big, strong clawed arms, scaled skin, or tentacles that can be extruded from her back, but only if she can remember how it feels to have those body parts and how to use them, which is dependent on how many times she has had that body part, how recently she last had it, and how different from a human body part it is. Esmeralda rarely has a large repertoire of supernatural features to assume.

By shapeshifting, Esmeralda can heal even serious wounds if she is still conscious. They still hurt while she has them, and she can still be killed if something would normally kill her very quickly or render her unconscious, though her spirit as Envy incarnate could probably find a way to return.

Biography: Esmeralda was a normal little girl, for the first eighteen months of her life. Born to Ignacio and Natalia Montez in a reasonably well-off family in southern California, she was a temperamental child. She was loud and cranky and demanding and, unconditional love for their child aside, her parents thought she was a real pain at the time.

One day, eighteen months into her life, Esmeralda’s entire personality changed. She became calmer more talkative, and better-behaved. Her parents looked at this as a blessing.

Esmeralda didn’t play well with other children growing up. She would steal or break nice things that they had and she didn’t. She was very competitive in school; she couldn’t stand other kids being good at something that she wasn’t good at. All of her grades were straight A’s, and she was her school’s best soccer player. Her parents were proud of her for these things, but this was never enough for her.

She discovered her powers at age ten. Though ‘discover’ might not be the right word; she just woke up one day with a full understanding of them. They had been explained to her in a dream, she knew that much, but she could never recall the exact details of the dream. She started using her powers to steal things, especially clothes and jewelry from those whose bodies she would steal.

Her parents knew that something strange was going on, and that it involved stealing, but she was clever enough at hiding it that they never realized exactly what she was doing. They thought she was possessed by the devil, or something to that effect. She underwent therapy, and when that had no effect, an exorcism. Her relationship with her parents was strained as a result.

When she was eleven, she met Marco Lopez. She knew, instinctively, what Marco was and what she was, and she jumped at the opportunity to live with people like herself. With his help, she was able to run away from her parents and assume the identity of a different girl Marco was pretending to adopt.

Esmeralda has been Marco’s daughter for seven years. She’s still mad that the family moved to Manta Carlos during (during! In the middle of!) her senior year of high school. She's gotten along well enough with her family; even if they are terrible, they take good care of her and they generally understand her, which is more than she could have expected from her birth parents.
