Pham Thi Anh Sang

Bored, Anh Sang kicked a textbook off her bed, watching it thud onto the floor. She had been trying to be a good girl and do her science homework early in hopes of finding the time to experiment with her powers but the more she read, the more the material kept going over her head. It was something pretty boring, too. All this stuff about wavelengths and such that should have been helping her with sound manipulation but was really going nowhere at all because the book was just so dull. It was just paragraph upon paragraph of gibberish! She was going to do something better with her time, like draw or something.

As she was sitting up, however, the room suddenly was plunged into a darkness so deep that it was frigid. The outlines of familiar objects vanished within seconds, replaced with the image of a shadowy void all around. Reflexively, Anh Sang reached for her butterflies, only to find in horror that they had disappeared. There was only her and the dark. Or, at least there was until a loud booming came deep from beneath her. It rang from wall to invisible wall, chanting the same thing over and over again. The singular sound became several, separating into dozens of voices before combining back into one again. It was all too much for her eardrums; she clapped her hands over her ears but the sound persisted at full volume, drilling itself into her eardrums. Just when it seemed like her head was going to burst from the sensation, however, it suddenly vanished.

The darkness retreated to sunny shafts of sunlight pouring in through her window. The voices immediately dropped to silence and gentle birdsong. She was back in her room like before.

But no, something had changed. Something was different. She looked down at her hands and saw that they were different from before, covered in white gloves. In the faint reflection on her window, her black hair was replaced with white. She felt ready to take on the world. In her head, four ideas floated out of the confusion.

She was a Celestial Guardian and it was her duty to purge the Earth of evil. She had new powers. She would be this way until she turned eighteen. And, last of all, she had better become popular quickly.

For a moment, Anh Sang stared at her reflection. "OHMYGOD," she screamed. Did I just become Sailor Moon? she couldn't say out loud. The more she tried to get the words out, the more she was confused. The confusion quickly was overcome by excitement, however.

"All right!" she said. "First thing's first, I need a name!" And boy did she have an idea for one.
