An ornate, gold trimmed message was delivered early one morning, naming this one of several meeting spots. What appeared to be a young man with teal-colored hair stood nearby with a blank stare and calm demeanor, waiting.

"Dear sir, ma'am, or any other address of your choice,

You have been nominated by an anonymous source as a worthy partner to one of us Regalia, a race of guardian spirits. One of our number is willing to form a pact with you in return for taking part in a magical tournament across the island. Please see the rules listed below.

Malara stood on the steps of City Hall, looking down at her letter for a fifteenth time. She adjusted her grip on Ecstasy, leaning on the mace like a cane a bit.

"If this is a scam, I'm going to be pissed that I fuckin' called off my meeting today for this. But I guess we could always grab lunch, huh?" She turned and looked at Jackal and Thaniturge, who had both also received letters. So of course the three of them were going there together.

"Like you weren't already going to get lunch with us," Jackal said. No mace for him. He had his spear, but his spear was shrunk down into tiny pin form, so it wasn't like he was particularly menacing looking.

You know, beyond that Jackal was naturally menacing looking, and accompanying Thaniturge and Malara, some of the scariest people on the island.

"So," Jackal said with a pointed look at the teal-haired man. "He's got a big stick. Think it's him we're here for?"

"Probably, maybe... definitely," Thanni said. Unlike his companions, he was completely unarmed. The only thing he had in hand was a fruit smoothie. He was feeling a little out of place without one, and part of him considered calling down his ship.

"Let's just... see what he wants."

Three wasn't a bad number at all. Cornelius swept a lazy eye across all of the newcomers, noting the sparks that appeared around each. Around the woman, he saw an interesting mix of dull, fading sins shying away from him behind vibrant flashes of benevolence. Her companions were less interesting, although the blue-haired one interested him with the large sin resting behind him. Cornelius had seen worse, however.

"Welcome," he said quietly. "Are you prepared to make your pacts at this moment?"

Malara stepped forward, flipping Ecstasy over her shoulder like a bat. She chewed on her lip and sized Cornelius up. "I mean. They depends on what making a pact actually fucking does. I'm not signing my life away to anybody."

Her mouth curled up into a grin full of sharp teeth. "But if it's just a tournament, sure. I've got an itch to scratch."

Okay, right. He was... well, he was innocent, even if he didn't look it. He looked judgmental, like an angel from on high. Angels tended to kill a lot of people, only they also tended to show as innocent for him--they had no free will, and couldn't choose it, so it didn't count.

"Tournament works. Befriend the critters, get new powers, kick everyone's ass. That sound about right?"

Jackal was definitely imaging literal pokemon. Personally? He was hoping for a charmander.

Thanni's tail swayed before he rested on it. A tournament that involved bonding with mysterious creatures. Mal had a point, he wasn't signing his life away for some thrills. He'd been through too much shit. He sipped his smoothie and thought a moment.

"And this is legal? Like just an island wide fight tournament? And we get.... partners."

He was intrigued, and suspicious. This was sounding like some anime nonsense.

"Legal? Why would it not be?" Cornelius turned to the horned man. "Many Regalia would prefer not to make their matches physical. Those that do are in the minority."

"As for the pacts themselves," he said, mainly to the woman, "they are temporary and will fade at the end of the tournament should you choose to allow them to. Perhaps a Regalia will take a fondness to you and decide to stay but that is dependent upon you and them. You may keep what Divine Right you gain, however."

He glanced at each person before him. "Though I doubt any of you need it."

Malara's grin widened and she let her hair flare up into flames, rolling her shoulders as she did. "You're damn right I don't. But I'd never give up the chance to kick some ass and show off. Count me in."
