A Destiny Unfolds

Victoria listened to Wong as closely as she could, wincing a little at the mention of dangerous powers.

I doubt mine would be considered dangerous though...hell, I have to hand-manage half the things I bring over. And I doubt I could pilot a tank. Still though. Could give me some answers.

"If you don't mind me asking, what is your power anyways?"

And there it was. Victoria squirmed on the inside and out, as the familiar
question leapt onto her back. It had been asked relatively few times during the course of her life, but the end result of answering it was never good. She'd yet to be burned at the stake for it, but emotional damage was oftentimes more daunting than any blow to the flesh could ever be.

At least this time it's a question about the nature of my powers, and not of myself. She thought dryly. Inside, she debated over kicking herself. She'd been so used to avoiding telling people about her abilities, that upon finding herself in a place where she could openly share such things, she now simply couldn't.

"I, uh... well, it's kind of hard to explain. Um... give me one second, will you?" She set one bag on the floor, and pulled out a bottle of water she'd bought at the docks before she left. Twisting the top of it alleviated a tiny portion of her stress, and the cool liquid running down the back of her throat fixed the sudden dryness.

For God's sake Victoria, get over yourself. You've seen stranger things than this on the way up here.

It was true. On her way to the building, she'd peeked in all sorts of places out of curiosity. She'd seen people with features and abilities that made her own look rather timid in comparison. They weren't hiding it from this world. So why should she?

For the moment, at least, she resolved to quit being so worried.

Take a chance, will you? You'll never be able to face your father if you can't even explain to the friendly gentleman what you can do.

Heeding her own advice, she took a deep breath that she hoped wasn't too obvious.

"I can... well, I can open these little portals. I dunno if there's a name for them, but while raiding the thesaurus one night I decided to call them Ingressions. They go pretty much anywhere, depending on where I am at any given moment."

See? Painless. Briefly, Victoria wondered what realms she would have access to while here on the island. She hadn't used her power in a while, and she'd been afraid to test her abilities after arriving.

"I can't do a whole lot of things with them, but I get by just pulling things through into this world. You know, guns, swords, bears, trains. Sometimes even people. I even let a blimp through once while on a date. Worst end to a first kiss ever."

She blushed so hard she feared her cheeks might set the painting ablaze and fell deathly silent, suddenly aware that, in her newfound confidence, she might have revealed just a little too much.

He stopped when Victoria did, watching her a little worriedly. Oh, yes, that's right... For people who came to the island for the first time, it was only to be expected that they would still be hesitant about their abilities. Most of the students that the counselor had spoken to were surprisingly accepting of the entire thing but it was still very irresponsible for him to have assumed that everybody would have that same reaction. It really does kind of feel like I've been here forever. Maybe that was why things were feeling a bit like they were at a standstill right now.

"Portals? That's an interesting power," Wong Ha Jung said with a smile. "I don't think that I've met anybody with that yet. Not to my knowledge, anyways. Then again, I don't think that I've met anybody with teleportation either." Although, there he had been hearing some rumors about a... door? A door. Which could apparently teleport anybody who touched it to a different location of the school. He hadn't had the time yet to see if that rumor was true but he thought that he might do some investigating on that someday.

A particular part of Victoria's explanation did catch his attention, though. Pulling things into this world, she had said. He asked curiously, "So are these portals only to other worlds? Or do they connect places in this one as well?" The idea of there being multiple worlds still was a bit difficult for the man to swallow, but that was because it made the universe suddenly seem so much bigger. He was just a simple person who was content to stay in a small area for the rest of his life; the grandness of all the worlds was a little too much for him.

It was fascinating, though, Wong Ha Jung had to admit. It really was. But he'd rather hear about what other people did than go through all of it himself. Some people went out into the world to make their mark, some went out to explore. Wong Ha Jung was the kind of person who waited for all of those people to come back home.

The question caught Victoria a little off guard. She had tried, on several occasions, to open up an Ingress of her own a short ways away. However, she was always daunted by the apparent absolute that she could not control the location of the "input" portal, simply open the one that allowed things through.

"As far as I know, they only open up to other worlds outside of ours," she said, mirroring her thoughts. "I've tried to do it before, but I can never quite control where they open up. It's more like... leafing through a photo album. And every so often I find a picture I can take out and look at."

"It's a shame, really." The possibilities began to flow through Victoria's mind yet again. "If you think about it, every output has to have an input. I can only control the output. But if I could figure out how to manage an input..." She trailed off, having lost the sound of her own words among a concert of thoughts.

I could technically teleport. I can't step through my end, because you can't put something into an output. But if I could get the input in front of me...

She caught herself and laughed. "I'm sorry, I ramble sometimes. So no, at the moment, I can't do anything in our world but let things in. It's not completely bad though," she added. "Sometimes it's nice to be able to just open up a window and look. You'd be surprised how beautiful some of those other worlds are."

Listening to Victoria as she spoke, he was struck very strongly by the sense that she'd probably fit in pretty well on the island. Just by the way she spoke, it didn't seem like she should have any serious issues. She seemed nice enough, not too anxious about being among others with powers, and decently in control of her own abilities...

But that was really too much assuming, wasn't it? Catching himself, Wong Ha Jung told her with a soft chuckle, "Oh, no, rambling's absolutely fine. It's always interesting to hear about what others can do here. After a certain point, you think you've heard it all. And then somebody else comes by and you're reminded that the world's a bigger place than you thought it was originally." It seemed to be the trend for Manta Carlos as a whole, really. It was like the place went out of its way to surprise people, which was sometimes bad but more often good than not.

As they reached the stairwell, the man asked, "Do you take pictures of the worlds that your Ingressions show you? If it's possible, it seems like it would be something be worth keeping up with. Plenty of people around here would be extremely interested in that sort of thing, I think, and I guess it's nice to be able to keep track of what you've seen."

Victoria paused before answering. Should she?

Why not? No one's raining judgement down on you so far.

"Only one so far. In fact, I believe I brought it with me."

Victoria set her bags down and started picking through the larger of the two. She shifted her position slightly to block the view of her bag; not out of suspicion, but from a distinct embarrassment at her failure to neatly arrange the contents before leaving.

As she shuffled, Victoria killed the awkward silence by trying to explain.

"Normally, the Ingression only shows up as static when I take a picture of it on my phone. It gets a little better if I use an actual camera, but not much. Nothing worth saving, anyway."

Her fingers bumped up against a silver cloth band, which she absentmindedly worked onto her hand while shuffling through loose linens and trinkets with the other.

"But I figured out that my oldest camera somehow manages to capture all of the image with none of that icky static."

Shit! I know I packed -oh. Right.

She pulled out a small little cigar box, that used to belong to her grandfather. The latch had already been undone by the perils of travel, and she snuck a hand inside to grab the polaroid.

"Aha. This is the only one I've taken so far. It's kind of simple, but... there was something about it I couldn't resist."

Hesitating only slightly, she held the photograph out to Wong. The picture was of an open landscape, with only one side tinged by the edges of a large forest. In the distance, a single brown tower rose up into the skies, sculpted as if someone had taken a tall rectangle and twisted it back and then forth along the length, and then curled it around an invisible center. Further beyond the tower, the faded white edge of a moon engulfed nearly half the horizon.

What she didn't say was that she had kept the picture out of a strange sense of longing. It was a wonderful thing, to be able to peer into worlds of all different kinds, but for an explorer like Victoria, being allowed only to press her nose against the glass caused more than physical anguish.

Wong Ha Jung

He waited curiously, averting his eyes out of embarrassment as Victoria searched through her bag for it. There were just some things that didn’t seem entirely proper to him, like a man looking through a woman’s belongings. In general, too, he disliked intruding on other’s people’s privacy. Which was ironic because wasn’t that his job anyways? It felt like the kind of contradiction that he could only try to laugh off as his own anxiety. For the time, though, the man listened attentively to what Victoria was saying, grateful to not be left to his own thoughts.

“Ah, sometimes mistakes can be interesting, too,” Wong Ha Jung said, with a feeling of self consciousness as he took the picture from her. Not wanting to mess up something that obviously meant that much to her, he held it in such a way that his fingers made as little contact with it as possible. When he was worried about things, his hands tended to sweat a bit and Oh, thinking about it isn't helping at all! Even though it was probably all in his mind at that particular moment, there was a deep blush slowly starting to spread across his cheeks.

Looking at the picture, he could see something that actually looked rather like Earth -except for that surreal tower. "So this is what another world looks like?" the man mused softly. "I wonder what kind of people live there. Do you ever speak with any of them?" It was an idea which that both excited and frightened him a little, because even though he was fascinated by sheer number of untold stories out there, there would always be this uneasy sense of being in some glass cage of his own making.

Am I letting too many things get away from me? Embarrassingly, his mind wandered off to thoughts of two particular women. Maybe… He did his best to try and shove the subject away, because the more he thought about it, the more he became convinced that he was simply a pathetic person.

"I wish," she said, tossing things back into her bag. "Most of the time, it's just an open window- actually, you'd be surprised how many times I find myself looking at something from hundreds of feet in the air."

She laughed a little, pausing in her attempts to repack to stare out a nearby window in the real world. She had seen similar view from her bedroom on the ground floor; even higher, sometimes, able to peer into the heart of a cloud from several thousands of feet below sea level.

"Occasionally, I do run across some people. But I've never been able to talk to any of them. Honestly... I'm not even sure if most of them can see me. I do remember this one little girl though." She hesitated, thinking back. The girl had run in front of her viewpoint, stopping so suddenly that her stuffed doll rocked at her side. Sharp green eyes had stared back directly int hers, something that Victoria had thought impossible.

"The look in her eyes was so powerful. She looked terrified, and yet, almost awed. I waved, mouthed things at her, but she never responded." She slung the bag over her shoulder, frowning slightly. "I was always a little bit worried that... maybe she was looking at something behind me." Victoria shrugged, perking back up. "I guess I'll never know though."

Wong Ha Jung

"Sometimes, I've found that people's powers increase rather dramatically after coming to this island," Wong Ha Jung said thoughtfully. "It's really amazing to see it happen. Some of the younger ones, after just a few months, have managed to do things I wouldn't have ever dreamed of." He smiled at Victoria, laughing softly, "They might have a few years on you but I'm sure you'll manage to accomplish wonderful things here. The powers you have seem to be the type that could still grow. Give it a few months, maybe years depending on the circumstances, and you might be able to talk with those people you see."

In comparison, I think I'm at sort of a standstill, aren't I? To be perfectly honest, he had never wanted to expand the scope of his powers anymore than what they already had, so he had never tried. On the contrary, it would have been nice to whittle them down to the point where they were barely effective at all. It could always have been much worse, though. Compared to so many other people, Wong Ha Jung thought that he really didn't have any reason to complain.

Yet, there he was, doing just that. Useless.

"The library's up there." He indicated with his head up the stairs. "I don't know how things work up there but I'm sure if you'd like to take a look around now, we could find a librarian to help you out."

It was a wonderful thought. To be able to see into other worlds was one thing, but to speak into them? Step into them, even, if she could just figure out how.

If I could have talked to that girl...Could I have helped her? Or would I have fallen prey to whatever was standing behind me instead?

Would it make things even harder? To be tempted to save not only herself, but countless others as well.

But after all, wasn't that why she had come here? Not just to figure out the why, but the what as well? What could she do with practice, with dedication?

With focus. At the mention of the library, her sense of that last returned.

"I think I'd like that very much." She smiled at Wong Ha Jung, other priorities having vanished. "It's still early enough, I should at least be able to get an idea of where I need to start looking before I head off to my room."

As they continued walking, a thought hit her.

"Um... my room. Which is in... what, general direction... again, exactly?"

The blush returned.

(We actually have a map now so I guess I have mash together stuff since our location's already been nullified by canon.)

Wong Ha Jung

"Oh, the student dorms are in a different building," Wong Ha Jung answered. "You would be with the other college students so if you went back outside, go up the steps and the west side of campus, you would find it."

"They gave you a map, right? Could I see it for a moment?" With a little bit of a self deprecating laugh, he said, "Sometimes I'm not the best at giving instructions. Basically, west side of campus, with a fountain in front of it. Opposite of the greenhouse." Maybe that would be clearer?

"If you have your room number on you" -which, of course she did. But it seemed like good filler?- "The first number should be your floor number. I haven't been to the college dorm before so I can't say for certain what it's like. But it's anything like the one for the elementary students, it should be very nice."
