“I-I’ll pay for any damages if she causes them…” Vanyan replied with a sigh. It was obviously not the first time Jin had caused him such trouble.

Jin’s footsteps on the roof went to the left, and there seemed to be another pair of steps going in that direction as well. Vanyan could only guess that there was, indeed, someone on the roof. Someone with enough bad intent for Jin to sense it. Then the footsteps were no longer on the roof. Vanyan suspected that Jin was chasing this mystery person from roof to roof now. All he could really do was just…not worry about it, for now. Jin could take care of herself.

So, he tried to do just that: not worry about Jin—despite the creepy anxiety he couldn’t help feeling crawling up his spine—and turn his attention back to Joshua.

“R-rent for a whole year, huh?” Vanyan said with a nervous laugh. The price wasn’t a concern for him, but by buying such an expensive piece he felt like he was ‘flaunting’ his wealth. It just made him feel weird. This is why he preferred just buying stuff online. No one in the room to give him judgmental stares. It was unlikely he’d find rings with invisibility powers on the internet, though.

“Um…” he started, hesitant. Vanyan was obviously buying the ring for the crazy woman that had just leapt on his roof. Why couldn’t Jin EVER leave a good, normal impression on anyone? But, well, Vanyan knew that Jin would ultimately use the ring for the right reasons. Mostly. Hopefully. Well, she would definitely use it to save some innocent selkies, either way.

“…Is a check okay?” Vanyan finally managed to squeak out.

Joshua Langford

"It sounds a lot more impressive than it actually is," he admitted. "The place is a bit older than most and I don't have electricity bills to pay because my powers would fry them the lines immediately. Martha was the owner before me and she was one hell of a negotiator. Managed to snag some sort of deal with the previous landlord a few decades back but never bothered to tell me what exactly she did. Then they both kicked it and now the new landlord doesn't seem to want to the deal back." He shrugged. "It has its advantages."

Joshua stared up at the ceiling for a moment before lowering his eyes again. "Yeah, checks are fine. They're a bit of a hassle to deal with since I'll need a middleman to cash them in but it's better than keeping stacks of money in a shoebox like the old lady did before me." The way he spoke of her, however, was faintly wistful. Paranoia was always easier to shoulder when there were two people around, not just one but, well. The same could be said for any other sort of emotional baggage.

He took a pad of paper out of his pocket and wrote down the price before handing it to the other man. "That's the receipt for your records but I need to stress again that I do not take returns on invisibility rings. If you take this off my hands, it's a done deal." The man paused for a moment before going on, "I don't suppose you're still interested in those telescopes are you? If your friend's still up there taking care of business, it might not be a bad idea to stay under cover for a while longer."
