Name: Sorin Midnal
Age:19 20
Birthday: 19/03-1996
Gender: Male
Category: Student
Class: College
Grade:Sophomore Junior
College Major: Magical Studies, with a focus on spirituology.
Appearance Description:
Sorin stands at 5'10", with a lean, fairly toned build. In no way an athlete or ideal magazine body, but it's obvious that he works out. His skin is clearly tanned, with a bit of farmer's tan along his face, neck and forearms. His face is sharp and angular, with amber eyes and a fairly orderly side-cut of blonde hair. He has a habit of falling deep in thought and frequently looks absent, as if somewhere else entirely in his mind. Small nicks and light scars stretch along his forearms and, more than anywhere else, knuckles. A few dents can also be seen on his face, but none of these scars seem to be from major wounds. If one gets a look at his bare back, an ellaborate circle seal has been tattooed on it.
When he gets to decide, Sorin prefers fairly thin clothing that's also easy to move in. A pair of slightly baggy, bleached jeans, a t-shirt (usually red, black with some band logo or plain black) under an open white short-sleeved buttonup marks his usual style. At times he sports necklaces but this is a rarity.
Personality Description:
Sorin is a rather serious figure. Not exactly a killjoy, per-se, he does know how to let loose and enjoy himself, but he is primarily both responsible and grounded, with a fair bit of discipline. Ever an avid worker, he is quick to prioritise studies or errands above simple fun and he is usually quick to reprimand someone who thinks they can just slack off. Hard work brings results according to him and he is not one to go back on his own word
Honest and fair, Sorin usually makes an excellent judge, more than capable of taking an impartial stance in disputes. He says what he thinks and prefers dividing things up evenly, or as is deserved, and can very quickly lose patience with both liars, cheaters and petty squabbles. He has a very strict moral code, which he sticks to until the end. This can make him a bit insensitive, he is not one to pull any punches or beat around the bush. He'll deliver his thoughts bluntly and brutally, often forgetting things such as tact. He himself considers this trait nothing more than simple honesty and can often grow both impatient and confused if someone tries to correct him.
He can be rather proud though, convinced that his way is the right away and he has quite a violent temper when the right triggers strike him. This combination can make him foolhardy and prone to stubbornly sticking to his way even if everyone else insists it isba dumb idea. He will more often than not see this and understand how stupid he was being when his rage subsides, but by then the damage is already done.
However, at the core of his very being, Sorin is loyal, protective and kind. He may not always show it and he is far from perfect, but he does genuinely love the people around him and he would not wish for anything but the best for most people. It's just that his definition of "the best" might not quite resonate with some others.
Powers:
Medium Physiology
Sorin is never alone. In fact, he shares his body with a quite powerful nature spirit known as Radiant. Radiant is a potent spirit of light that merged its spiritual... Essence with Sorin's flesh, effectively making him a bit of an amalgam of both, a "Medium". Radiant is harsh, hot-headed and with a blazing extremist ideology regarding good, evil and justice. According to Radiant, absolute good is the destruction and subversion of evil and justice is punishing evil when seen. As it itself says, "Good is that which Evil fears. Justice is when you make those fears a reality". This zealous mindset often clashes with Sorin's own and the two rarely see eye to eye.
However, as long as the two are joined, Sorin enjoys a number of benefits. For one, he possesses Spirit Vision, allowing him to not only see spiritual activity and detect other Mediums on sight, he can also pierce most supernatural forms of camouflage, seeing through disguises, hallucinations and illusions with little trouble. For another, his Physical Enhancements allow him to perform superhuman feats. With some exertion he can sprint up to 50 miles per hour, lift cars and leap across buildings. As long as he is in direct sunlight he also benefits from Regeneration, wounds closing, tears mending and broken bones repairing themselves in a matter of minutes.
However, all of these abilities are dependant on Radiant, who depends on the sun. If Sorin is not in direct sunlight he, though still physically formidable and with his Spirit Vision in place, will not regenerate and he cannot perform even close to the same kind of stunts as he can otherwise. During nighttime, his physical enhancements fade completely, leaving him with only his Spirit Vision. During solar eclipses, he loses all benefits granted by his Medium body.
Radiant Warrior
However, if the situation truly calls for it, Sorin can call upon Radiant and bring him out to the surface, letting the spirit control his body in exchange from a new surge of power. This can only be done during daytime.
As the Radiant Warrior, Sorin's eyes burn with white light, flames trickling from the pupilless spheres and his very skin seems to shine with a golden glow. White flames cover his upper body and arms, adding to the already painful light. In this state, the human and the spirit’s roles are reversed, Sorin becomes the voice in the back of his mind while Radiant takes the wheel, with its zealous, alien mind.
However, the Radiant Warrior benefits from a few boons. One of these is Improved Regeneration. No matter where he is, underground or in pitch black darkness, as long as the sun is in the sky, Sorin's body heals as mentioned above. His physical enhancements also always act as if he is in full daylight. The most obvious benefit however, is that of the Judgement Flares. Sorin (or rather, Radiant) can form and throw flares of scorching white flame. This fire is ridiculously hot, capable of melting most non-magical metals and pierce most mundane defenses. The bare heat is unbearable. Even supernatural creatures immune to mundane fire are burned by the flames, though significantly less so than those without that kind of protection.
Powerful as it is however, the Radiant Warrior is not fit to last. After fifteen minutes (half that if the whole time isn't spent in direct sunlight) the flames scatter and Radiant is pushed back into Sorin's mind. Sorin himself is usually extremely exhausted after this ordeal, requiring several hours of rest to even walk. Worse still though, this trick wears out the essence reserves Sorin's body generates for Radiant. While the spirit recovers (A recovery that usually takes about twenty-four hours, or twelve if Sorin spends the entire time in direct sunlight) Sorin is for all intents and purposes a normal human being. None of the benefits of his Medium Physiology apply during this time period.
Biography:
Sorin was born to a family of shamans and Mediums. A life of spiritual activity, strange rituals and communication with creatures of the other side was never really that strange to him. He understood that it wasn't part of your average childhood, but he had grown up with it all. His mother was a Banisher, a "hunter" of sorts with the explicit purpose of driving back or destroy corrupted spirits and haunts, a lifestyle which the young Sorin both feared and admired. From an early age, he learned the importance of responsibility and discipline, knowing how dangerous temptation was and what kind of creatures lurked out there, waiting for a weak and open mind. Generally though, he felt safe in his community of likeminded.
At the age of twelve, he befriended a girl of similar age by the name of Leia. The daughter of family associates. The two quickly hit it off well, growing close and practically making up reasons to see and play with one another day after day. They both knew what their parents and older siblings did and were part of and were equally impatient to grow old enough to join them.
Eventually, Leia came with an idea. They were fifteen then. She had overheard what her parents had been talking about. Some mad scribe was apparently gathering equipment to summon some kind of twisted, dark spirit that he had grown to worship. They had been trained to handle spiritual threats in the case of emergency. They knew what they were doing. If they could handle this one themselves, imagine the praise they would be showered by. The renown. They could maybe even swear their oaths and rise to adult ranks sooner, becoming Banishers or anything else themselves.
Though originally reluctant, Sorin eventually agreed to the proposal. In all secrecy they prepared themselves, 'borrowing' weapons from their more experienced relatives and tracking down their target. They did find the occultist, mainly through what Leia had heard, but two fifteen year olds aren't exactly the stealthiest of individuals. The ritualist saw them and, in panic, attacked with his personal spells (for he recognised the equipment of Banishers). The rest is a haze, a chaotic blur of dodges, curses and swings. By some accident however, they managed to set off something the ritualist was planning to use. Sorin remembers the occultist's screams of panic, and then light and fire consumed all.
Next thing he knows, everything is aching. Sorin wakes up lying on his stomach, his back burning like nothing else. The sudden surge of spiritual presence had drawn the local actual shamans and, amongst them, his parents. They were the ones etching something into his back, chanting a rite Sorin didn't know. Pain and shame were his last memories before passing out.
They had accidentally activated the half-finished summoning concoction. The intended spirit had not emerged, but something else had. It latched on to the closest thing nearby -Sorin- anchoring himself to it in a desperate attempt to get a proper physical presence. He had been possessed and practically exploded in flames. When the adults arrived, Leia and the cultist alike were horrifically burned. The former was given emergency treatment, the latter was brought to be judged. Sorin himself though, he had to be brought down. Due to the deep bond the anchoring had created, an exorcism was impossible. Instead they sealed the spirit away, weakening it enough for Sorin to stay in control. Spirit-stuff and flesh merged though and Sorin's transformation into a Medium was unavoidable.
Disciplined and heavily scorned, Sorin was wracked with guilt and shame over this grievous mistake. For the majority of the next two years, he did all he could to make up for it and earn his family's respect again. Leia though, he never saw after that. It seems he was blamed for the wounds she suffered.
Learning to deal with the new voice in his head and sinking deeper and deeper into occult studies, Sorin eventually heard of Starlight Academy, offering education within these very fields unlike any other. With no hesitation, he moved. It was time to improve himself, to become something that made that grievous mistake worth it.
Additional Information:
* Is extremely ticklish
* Has a love for spicy food
* His relation to Radiant is tense at best, but the two do form an uneasy partnership; Radiant needs Sorin's body to remain in this realm and Sorin simply cannot get rid of the spirit, so he might as well accept its presence.
