Name: Samuel Declan Porter
Goes By: Sam, Sammy, other variants
Age: 13
Birthday: July 23rd
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight - he thinks
Religion: N/A
Category: Student
Grade: 8th (soon to be 9th)

Appearance:
  • 5’3”; Tall for his age
  • Soft Tan; generally clear skin
  • Vague ethnicity; just kind of “average Caucasian American”m
  • Braces; he’s on his last few months
  • Bright blonde hair; one of the few pure blondes, rather than those who are browning
  • Still young, but activity and genetics brought forth an early shift towards a strong, muscular build
  • Strong jaw, high cheekbones, large eyes
  • Puberty hit earlier rather than later for him; voice is already deepening (meaning he gets to experience those awkward vocal cracks)

Personality:
  • Very determined
  • Hard worker
  • Carefree and relaxed about life issues
  • Can slip into carelessness/inattention to detail if he isn’t careful (and he often isn’t)
  • Not the brightest crayon in the box in terms of academics, but makes up for it in a high emotional IQ and hard work
  • Really does struggle with his schoolwork, but tries not to let it show
  • Is an overall confident individual; he know’s he’s a good person, and he know’s he’s good on the eyes.
  • Insecurity lies in his intelligence, as he feels stupid for not understanding concepts as well as others his age
  • This insecurity expands into a somewhat negative view of himself that he has created. While he is confident in his worth as a person and does have pride, Sam sometimes feels as though he just can’t do anything right. He wonders at times if something is wrong with him, prompting his foster families to keep bringing him back, and he worries that he may never be as intelligent as his peers.
  • Sam can find comfort in sports, as he is talented in this area, and in helping others, as it makes him believe in his ability to do things right
  • He also worries that he may never find a forever home, though he finds solace in making friends and forming bonds
  • Athletically gifted and very much enjoys sports. Wants to maybe go to college for them, but he knows the chances of that working out long term - if he even got scouted at all.
  • Sam is honestly just a nice person. He has strong morals and a sturdy sense of right and wrong. At times, this can morph into a somewhat black-and-white mindset, but he can understand grey areas if he takes a little bit to consider them
  • Really likes to make people laugh and just be happy, and can usually be found with a smile (or something equivalent) himself
  • Samuel tries to be smooth with the ladies, but as far as ‘skill’ goes… Well, if you consider blunt interest and a heckton of roses to be skill, than he may have a chance yet
  • What Sam lacks in suavity, he makes up for in sheer persistence. When he really, honestly likes someone, he won’t usually give up that easily - not until he at least has them as a friend, anyway
  • Sam really dislikes being alone for long periods of time. Solitude lets his thoughts roam free, which often leads him to his insecurities, and he has a hard time getting himself out of that mindset.
  • As such, he is a very social person. Sam really enjoys being around people of all sorts, and is a very accepting and open-minded person overall. He does his best not to judge people, especially considering the island on which he lives, and has a serious distaste for discrimination and prejudice
  • That being said, Sam is still new to the world. He knows that certain atrocities exist, but having never been exposed to them, the ideas are new and unfamiliar. For example, he understands that murder is a terrible crime and has seen corpses on television, but watching a murder unfold in person would shock Sam terribly
  • Overall, Samuel really tries to maintain a positive attitude. He hates negative emotions and will devote considerable effort in trying to make himself, as well as those he cares for, happy and well.
  • May sacrifice his own comforts in order to help
  • While he’s a good kid, he does have a pretty big mischievous streak. A guilty pleasure at it’s finest, Sam enjoys causing trouble at times, but his bouts are small and spur of the moment. He rarely plans out pranks, instead opting for jabbing remarks and well-timed nudges. An exception to this is when he purposely disguises himself as, say, a chair, and then startles people when they sit down. Sam’s mischief is rarely, if ever, aimed to actually hurt people, and this should be noted.
  • Extremely outgoing and loves to be the center of attention. Very charismatic and good in the spotlight, would make a good public speaker
  • Generally gives off a warm and trustworthy vibe. People say that Sam just feels safe, something he takes considerable pride in
  • This may be partly because he is an open person. Sam doesn’t have much to hide, and so he doesn’t try to. While he won’t go out of his way to bear his weaknesses to the world, he won’t go out of his way to pretend like they don’t exist either. He is of the ideology that weakness don’t make someone less of a person, but complete them, even if he is embarrassed by his own
  • Sam does not break his promises, at least not without a very good reason to. When he gives his word, it may as well have been carved into stone. As such, Sam takes promises from others very seriously, and only gives his when he knows he can keep up with his word.
  • This quality has a potential backfire if anyone should promise something they don’t intend on keeping, as Sam would believe them absolutely unless he had a reason not to
  • Sam often tries to make light of his struggles when in the midsts of company, cracking vain jokes and trying to play things off as being better than they are. However, he never has been good at hiding his emotions, and his shame often comes through at least a bit
  • Actually surprisingly sensitive at times, but tries to keep his head up and his confidence strong and solid
  • Tries to roll with the punch as far as insults go and usually attempts to negate conflicts. He tries not to let people get to him in public, though he has his default weaknesses just like any other person
  • However, just like any other, Sam can and will be spurred to violence himself. He’s strong for a kid his age and, though he may not be the most graceful of combatants, his hits pack a heavy weight to them. Samuel fights to win, when he gets pulled into physical fighting, but he does not aim to knock out or honestly hurt people - usually. Get him mad enough and he reacts just like any other kid, but he can usually stop himself before he goes overboard

Powers:

Samuel’s main power is that of shifting - but not into animals. No, Sam has the ability to shift into random inanimate objects, such as chairs and working lamps, at the snap of a finger. The largest thing Sam can shift into is probably a small dresser or an average kitchen table, while the smallest would be a small portable radio of a few pounds. All components of machinery work accurately, but he can’t shift into digital devices such as computers, and CDs would only hold music that he has listened to at least once before or made up in his head. The same idea can be applied to books and artwork, in that if he is replicating something that already exists, he must have read the book/seen the artwork once to replicate it accurately.

Samuel can in fact shift into weapons, but no ballistic-type weapons, nothing that explodes, and nothing like bow-and-arrow sets with multiple components (though the bow itself is alright). Sam is usually limited to one-piece weapons such as swords, bows without arrows and spears. Nothing larger than a longsword or a staff-type weapon, nothing smaller than kitchen knives.

In any form, should Samuel threaten to break, he will unshift by default in order to keep from being snapped or crushed. In any form, Samuel also possesses the ability of speech (think a random voice screaming from the pillow you just flopped all over), regular thought, and movement. As far as movement goes, Sam is limited to pixar-type lamp hopping or jerking and wobbling (and often knocking himself over helplessly). He can roll himself as a staff or turn his own pages as a book.

Unlike many empaths, Samuel has a direct link to the emotions of those around him. He does not read their feelings at a distance, but instead feels them himself. Sam has no real limit to the amount of people he can feel at once, though the more people in the area/higher the emotional tension, the more apt he is to become overwhelmed and temporarily shut down. This is a passive power and can’t be shut off without conscious effort - and even still, over only during times of deep distress or sensory overload.

Due to the direct nature of this power, Samuel often has a hard time differentiating his own emotions from those of others. He can tell the difference with acquaintances, as they feel much more vague and distant than his own - almost as if he is recognizing the emotions, but from behind foggy glass. However, with very close friends, the difference is almost nonexistent. Samuel cries when they cry and laughs when they laugh, so long as his own emotions aren’t directly highly conflicting. Such situations can be quite confusing for Sam, as having such a close tie to such a different emotion would leave him reeling. The more time Samuel spends with someone, the stronger his power lables their bond, though this is much more effective if the time is spent one-on-one or with direct interaction, rather than in a group etc. Specific relationship doesn’t matter; the same would happen for an enemy as would happen for a lover.

People with listed resistances or nullifications are immune to this power by default. Characters with strong mental defenses can resist this power.

History:
Samuel grew up in a small port city in the USA, the town being fairly average and his life fairly uneventful as far as specific instances go. However, he didn’t not have an entirely normal upbringing.

Sam never met his mother and father - or at least, not as far as he can recall.. He was told he was left at the door of a police station at around three weeks old, the piece of paper in his blankets reading nothing more than “Samuel Declan Porter — July 23rd — I love you”. He was placed into a boys home after family and records could not be located.

For most of his life, Samuel moved between foster homes, never staying in one for too long. His longest home lasted for nearly two years, but even this inevitably ended. He never did find a permanent adoptive home, and while he tried to hold his head high through all the returns, Sam began to fear he would never find his forever family. This fear grew as he got older, and by now - nearly 14 years old - Samuel has accepted that he will probably never be adopted. People just aren’t looking for teenagers.

Schooling was always a constant struggle for Sam. He had far more trouble learning to read and multiply than his peers and was often subjected to rude remarks and ill-intended jabs due to his shortcomings. His struggles never really lifted, but as Sam grew older, he learned to channel his frustration into hard work and kindness. Due to his kind disposition, inspiring determination and involvement in sports and out-of-class events, Sam’s popularity eventually rose out of the gutter, but there were (and will forever be) those who target him for his low grades and slow comprehension ability. He still struggles immensely with his schoolwork and must see tutors during normal study periods to pass his classes.

Sam first heard of Starlight Academy through a message sent to him suddenly in-between foster parents. He was skeptical at first, but apparently one of the elderly home workers knew about the academy, having had a child or two invited before. She explained to Sam what the academy was like and, seeing no real reason not to go, Samuel took the offer.

Can I sign up my bab for the sports club please?

Just wanted to get Sammy out here while I had the idea clear in my head, since I haven’t been able to get it right for a long time.
