Lydia Sinclair

Lydia had been enjoying herself at the staff party—meeting new people and chatting with everyone she already knew—but at some point, she had slipped away. Not before she has some punch of course, which she didn’t realized had been spiked until she got out of the room and found herself tripped over her own feet a little. Oops. But, nonetheless, she was a girl on a mission.

Not every teacher was at the party that night, but she had a feeling there was one in particular who was still at the school. That’s what led her to knock at Ha Jung’s office door.

“Ha Jung?” Lydia called out. “Are you here?”

Lydia lightly swished her pink dress side to side as she waited for a response. Even though she did enjoy the party for a while, there was something about Ha Jung not being there that made her feel a little…lonely? He was really the person she wanted to see tonight, truth be told.

Wong Ha Jung

The last time the staff had actually gotten together for anything social was something like two years ago, if his memory was right. A little more than that, really, which made Wong Ha Jung wonder just where exactly did the time go. Some of the people he had met when he first began at the Academy had filtered out to somewhere else -supposedly a good thing considering his line of work. He hoped.

At some point, he had regained a bit of energy that he'd lost at some point. Work proved itself to be a pretty good way to just let the time go. Come in, come out, talk with new people, talk with old people, eat, sleep, possibly commute. That last part was something he tended to cut out from time to time, by spending the night in his office. It was just more convenient, honestly, and he was pretty sure that there weren't any rules against that. It was strangely nice to have a strict schedule and simply, well. Minimize the world? Introversion could be like a tug of war with social expectations. On one hand, solitude, on the other, loneliness. As much as he liked being around others, it did tend to drain him.

To be exact, though, the reason why he hadn't gone to the staff party was because he was currently alternating between dozing on the couch and staring at the ceiling. Leaning more towards the former option, the sound of a knock on his door was so startling that he reacted after a sharp pause without really thinking about who it was on the other side.

"The door is unlocked," Wong Ha Jung called back, sitting up and running a hand through his hair to settle it back to normal. He still needed a few moments to actually be functional.

Lydia was giddy off of the spiked punch, but as soon as she heard Ha Jung's voice she froze. It was no wonder she was feeling lonely--she hadn't seen Ha Jung in two years. And she thought about him quite a bit in that time, too. They had communicated a bit via texting, but this was the first time since she left that she would actually be seeing him in person. After...what had happened to him.

She took a deep breath and opened the door. She would not allow the anxiety of being gone for two years under incredibly vague circumstances that she had shared with no one except Yura to take her away from a dear friend. She hoped that dear friend wanted to see her, anyway.

"Hiii~ Look who's back," Lydia said as she poked her head from behind the door with her usual bright smile, despite the anxiety churning in her. She stepped inside and closed the door.

Her eyes fell upon his wheelchair. There it was. It didn't really seem real that Ha Jung had been through such a traumatic ordeal until she saw the wheelchair right there. Reality was sinking in about both his situation and her own, and she tried her best to smile her way through the massive knot in the pit of her stomach.

"I missed you," she said softly.

"Lydia!" The sight of his friend and secret crush after all this time caused him to bolt right into full alertness. "You're back!" He started forward for a moment before holding himself back, caught between the choices of going through the effort of physically moving himself to the door or being slightly rude and staying put. With great embarrassment, he chose the latter, smiling sheepishly.

"Sorry, would you mind?" He asked, inviting her to the empty spot next to him on the couch with a nod. "It's really nice to have you back and I'd get up myself but, well. You know." Two years later and the incident was still a bit of an awkward topic for him even though the healing process was going well for him. A little guiltily, Wong Ha Jung was actually glad that Lydia hadn't been around for the last two years. He hadn't exactly been at his best then, in any aspect. At all. Like. At all.

He cleared his throat, fidgeting in nervousness. "How have you been?"

“Oh, 'course not!” Lydia said as she quickly scuttled over to sit beside Ha Jung on the couch. She hated to admit that even after getting back in touch and learning about Ha Jung’s injuries, she still couldn’t at all picture him unable to stand until she actually walked into that room and sat down beside him.

“Y-yeah, I know…” Lydia soon added is a hesitant tone. She felt rather pathetic in that moment.

“I wish I could'a been here and tried to help somehow,” Lydia murmured, looking down at that moment. She was thinking of reaching over and holding his hand. Maybe that was too ‘familiar’ for a friend who just up and disappeared for two years with little to no explanation. So, her hands stayed in her lap.

“B-but, then again, my powers are kind'a useless! I guess I wouldn’t have been much help at all…but still…”

She lifted her head. Lydia was trying to keep her happy persona afloat, but her smile was faltering.

“I’m…well…I’m glad to be back. Let’s put it that way,” she said with a sheepish laugh. There was something about the situation—both her own and what had happened to Ha Jung—that had the same words running through her head over and over again. Life is too short. Life is too short. Life is too short. Life is too short.

She wasn’t ready to share what she had experienced in the past two years, but maybe it was time to share something else with Ha Jung.

“Um…can I tell you something?” She suddenly blurted out. Life is too short. “It’s, like, something really personal so I really need you to keep it to yourself, y’ know?”

Wong Ha Jung

He was already shaking his head, partially out of embarrassment and partially because if he didn't, he would have to wince. "It's probably for the best that you weren't here," Wong Ha Jung admitted with an uneasy glance to the side. "I haven't exactly been good at retaining friends lately. I just, ah. Needed some time, I suppose."

Two years, he was screaming at himself silently. Honestly. Two. Years. Put yourself together already, it's getting old, please. Just a blink and then everything had fast forwarded to the point they were at currently. He had lost an obscene amount of time simply feeling sorry for himself.

"It's all right, Lydia," he said, and the fact that it might have actually been true was almost surprising. Maybe that was saying something about him. "Really. It's just nice to have you back around."

There was still that quivering feeling, however, which had persisted through all that time. They had been friends and of course, of course, Wong Ha Jung had harbored a crush on the redheaded woman. Sometimes he wondered if it was still there.

But then his heart did a familiar, awkward somersault and the question was pretty firmly answered for him. "If you don't mind me knowing," he told her, already planning a dozen outs for her to take, just in case. "I won't tell anybody, I promise. Just, if there's anything I can do-"

Lydia took a long, deep breath. Alright, she was really doing this. She was trusting one more person with her secret. Besides Yura, Ha Jung seemed like the only person she could trust with what she was about to say.

It seemed to her—until she could be honest about this with Ha Jung, they would never truly be friends. Or…something else.

“This is about, um, Bunny. Sort of.”

She raised her hand to rub at the back of her neck, looking away for a moment.

“You’re probably wondering why I know Bunny, or why I’m bringing her up…”

Then she lowered her arm, looking at Ha Jung again. She couldn’t hesitate. It just needed to be said.

“That’s because…I’m Bunny. And Lydia. I’m a shapeshifter, living a double life, and I have been hiding that for most of my life.”

Lydia reached out for Ha Jung’s hand, hoping he would allow her to take it.

“I’m so sorry. You’ve known me and Bunny all this time, and I never told you…”

She bit at her lip as anxiety swelled in her. Would this really be okay? Would Ha Jung forgive her for hiding it for so long?

Wong Ha Jung

Bunny? That was another person Ha Jung remembered well and, as it was with Lydia, he couldn't help but feel like every single conversation they had shared caught him with a severe case of foot-in-mouth syndrome. He had to make the time to apologize to her sometime for that, although it had been so very long since he had seen her. Did he even know where to find her besides her workplace? Was she even there anymore? Because oh God, oh God but okay, maybe he could work up the willpower to just plow through the embarrassment-

He blinked once at the word shapeshifter, still not entirely understanding until Lydia reached the very end, with You've known me and Bunny. Even so, it took a moment. "Oh," he said, with a reflexive nod. Then it clicked.

"Oh my God!" He didn't take her hand, but it wasn't for the reason that she might have thought. Ha Jung was, actually, completely fine with the idea that somebody he knew was secretly a shapeshifter. Many people were, after all. He was also pretty okay with things being hidden from him. He was a psychologist and that was normal. He was also Ha Jung, which meant that his tolerance levels for various kinds of external crap outside of physical violence was through the roof. Anxiety, however, was not an external factor. That one was on him.

"Oh my God, there was that one time at the club and I just stood there like this lump and I was dying of embarrassment and Bunny was there but Bunny is you so that was you and oh my God did I actually apologize for that I think I did but I can't really remember much of it except I really wanted to have a heart attack and then I never saw you again after -did I saw I was sorry? I really am sorry. Oh my God, I was being so weird and it was probably just a normal day for you until I started acting out like that. I am so, so sorry-"

Ha Jung did not take her hand, but it soon became apparent to Lydia that it wasn’t because he was angry. Instead, it was all those moments of awkward suddenly flooding into his head at once. Poor guy. He really did stumble into some awkward situations with Bunny—especially when he ended up at the club by accident! And Lydia had witnessed her fair share of similar behavior too—but Lydia just found Ha Jung cute as a result of it.

Rather than take his hand, Lydia moved closer to Ha Jung and hugged him. She held him tight, pressing his head against her shoulder.

“Shh, hun, it’s okay…” Lydia murmured to him, stroking his hair and trying to calm him down.

“Believe me, you have always apologized whenever you have felt like you needed to,” she added with a little chuckle.

“Because you are a very kind and considerate man. Not quite like any man I have ever known before, and that is what I like about you. And I want you to know that you aren't bothering me--even when you think you are.”

She couldn’t help but laugh to herself. He wasn’t even concerned that she was a shapeshifter and had kept it a secret! He was only worried about possibly bothering her at some point in their interactions! He was so cute, so sweet…

She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.

“I am very fond of you, Ha Jung. That is why I am telling you my secret. Because I want you to know who I really am. I…want to be closer to you.”
