Aiden laughed. His experience had been quite simpler.

"I must agree with you there. This is my, oh goodness, fifth ball here at the academy? They have their interesting moments, but mostly I end up feeling like a chaperone even though I'm here as a guest as well."

He shook his head and, when Penelope said the drinks weren't spiked, Aiden took a sip of his. The punch was not nearly as sweet as he expected and instead seemed to be a blend of mulled spices and apples. Fantastic.

As for her cup being spiked, Aiden was inclined to ask...."Does having a spiked drink make this event go any faster?"

He shook his head.

"No, I'm a physician at the academy, and the hospital, and sometimes the behavioral corrections facility," he explained.

When he realized she was heading away, Aiden raised his cup in a wave and continued to lean against the bar table, waiting and watching the crowd.

He smiled as a woman approached him; not a big smile, just a closed-mouth half smile as a greeting. "Someone like me?" he asked, slightly amused at her choice of words. "Maybe I just haven't found the right person to dance with yet." He took a sip of his drink, glancing to the woman. She stood out from most of the people at the event. He liked her dark hair with the hint of red. He presumed that she was around his age, maybe a bit older, but the mask made him unsure. "Are you here alone?"

The man in the 'mask' turned at the soft smoky voice. He turned and saw the woman in the black evening dress. Then he saw the veil. It was penelope. It couldn't be anyone else.

"Hello there, my dear" he smiled, the blue light which surrounded him growing slightly brighter at her presence. He ran a hand down the back of his skull, remembering the feeling of hair.

"I wouldn't miss it for the world. Shall we get something to drink?" He winked "although i might have something special for this very occasion"

Diane smirked lightly as he replied to her before the question came up, giving a shrug she breathed out lightly as she sculled the punch and moved the cup from her robotic arm to her other arm, "I was brought here because I was apparently going to spend it like I did any other event like this, drinking my loneliness away," She said giving a slight chuckle before she turned towards him, outstretching her hand, "Diane Valentine, local club owner and sadly, a student here," She said smirking as her eyes showed off their grey appearance.

"And yes, alone," She said her smirk spreading into a smile as she looked at his face, sadly covered by the mask he was wearing.

He noticed the machanical arm; that was pretty cool. The thought of how she came to gain a mechanical arm crossed his mind but he thought it would be impolite to ask. Her story made him laugh as he took her hand and shook it. "It's very nice to meet you. I take it you don't like this sort of event?"

"I thought i would try something new and meet some new people. I've never really been to a ball before. Too formal for my liking." The most formal event he had ever been to was a wedding and even then, he had only been to a couple of them. He preferred to go out with his friends to a bar or something along those lines, not wear a suit and drink punch.

Diane sighed lightly, he hit the nail on the head, "How did you guess?" She asked her smile still on her face, inside she was beating herself up over it. This isn't a fairy tale stop smiling like a moron. She looked up at him and gave a little sigh, "If anything I wouldn't mind a scotch right about now, not some sugary drink that's given out," She said giving a little laugh to herself.

"So, are you going to keep your name a mystery and ask me to dance or something mysterious like?" She said as she raised an eyebrow at him, her smile fading and being replaced by a smirk.

He walked into the ball, his movements naturally agile, a calm smile on his face, wearing a white tux that looked perfect on him. He'd been looking forward to this, an evening to mingle, to dance, to meet the people here. The wild parties were fun, but there was something about these more formal parties he enjoyed, and he excelled at them just the same. His handsome face, tilted left and right as if looking over everything, yes he'd been looking forward to it.

The young man walked through the crowd, smiling, shaking hands and occasionally bowing in greeting when he stopped to talk to people. Being socially adaptable was useful, it allowed one to enter any situation and fit in perfectly well. He even greeted a few in their native language to make them feel a bit more comfortable, he'd worked hard to learn all these things, now it was time to reap the rewards.

"That's just my power: knowing when people don't want to be stood in a room of fancy people drinking punch," he joked. Scotch was a drink he never liked the taste of but it probably would have been better than the punch.
"Isn't that what you're supposed to do? Keep an air of mystery." The idea that he didn't know anyone and no one knew him made an event that he would find boring more enjoyable. He reached out a hand to her, smiling and saying: "Would you care to dance?" He wasn't a particularly good dancer but he was good enough.

From across the room - oh! The young woman stopped dancing on her own, and strode over to the buffet, picking up one of the drinks. As expected, spiced with what was probably nutmeg and cinnamon. Having the palate of a baker, she tried to discern the many flavors, and after a bit of sipping what she thought to be mulled cider, she concluded that it was some of the best she'd tasted. The only thing she was missing was the conversations that wound around the room, weaving themselves with laughter and more than a few sips of cider.
Target acquired - as she spotted a fairly handsome man in conversation.
It was about time she'd talked to boys on this island.
So, this in mind, she waltzed right over, chatting up a few passerby, until she bumped into (quite literally) a young man in a white tuxedo - which, the young woman had to admit, looked quite nice.
"Enjoying the masquerade, sir?"

Diane smiled lightly before she gave a small laugh before she looked at his hand, asking his question as her face turned into a smirk once more, "Let's make a deal, I'll dance with you, but, at the end, I get to know your name," She said the smirk sticking to her face as her eyes seemed to light up as she finished the words, putting her hand in his, "You lead," She said smirking still as she gave a breathless laugh at the end.
