• Fellow students view Kaz as a bit aloof and overly focused on his studies. He is known for enjoying playing guitar in the Arts Wing. While not exactly a loner, Kaz is most often a solitary figure; it's known that Kaz has acquaintances rather than anyone he calls a friends. His focus on academics is the reasoning. Kaz was recently attacked by a werewolf at lunch.​

• Teachers tend to view Kaz positively. He is a good student and hands his work in on time. He is skilled in music and science. Many note his lack of close interpersonal relationships and try to encourage him to make friends. It is known to few teachers that Kaz is prone to illness.​

Plot Arcs: Misery Loves Company

Kaz is a quiet student who is most often seen playing guitar in the music room or studying alone. Kaz's focus on academic achievement often gives the impression that he has no time for friends. In truth, it's because Kaz only stays friends with someone long enough so he can subtly sabotage the relationship.

The fact that he needs to feed on misery is one of his biggest secrets.

Kaz doesn't want to die. He is willing to do whatever it takes--including outing his friend, Jake--to protect his secret.

Kaz's other secret?


He hasn't realized he's gay.

Kaz has mostly kept to himself since coming to the island. As a result, he has almost no close friends and the people that were his friends have almost inevitably become a victim of Kaz's misery.

Kaz doesn't really understand what Shadow has been through or even though much about him--the other boy will barely speak to him, after all. But he's happy having Shadow around as he's easily one of the most miserable people Kaz has ever met.

Hot blind rooomate.
Kaz is pleased to have Sam as his roommate. Clean, quiet, and not the sort to make drugs that blow up in their shared living space, Sam is everything Kaz would want in a roommate. He's off-limits to Kaz due to having to share the space together. Unfortunately, he's really cute, too. Its a good thing Kaz isn't gay or he'd have a hard time sleeping at night.

Kaz often says that "people drift apart" but the unfortunate truth is that Kaz often sabotages any relationship before he gets too close to the other person.

Guitar tutor werewolf friend.
Jake tutored Kaz in guitar and Kaz enjoyed having the opportunity to play with someone else who had a musical ear. When Kaz became too ill one day, he revealed Jake's secret to the entire cafeteria.

Former Roommate.
Cabel is Kaz's former roommate. Though they are on speaking terms, Kaz is still pissed at his ex-roommate for starting a fire in their shared living space.
