Kaz loved Samhain.

It was one of the most beautiful holidays there was, he though, and maybe it was because of the autumn leaves. Maybe it was because of the crisp, cool nights, the taste of apple cider, the sweet crunch of the leaves beneath his feet, the feel of magic in the air.

Literal magic.

In Poland, it had been Zaduszki, with trips being made to the local cemeteries. He'd visited the graves of his adopted parent's parents, and he'd lit candles and smelled incense and enjoyed the silence and the prayer even if he didn't quite understand it. For Kaz, the allure of Halloween came from something very, very wild. It was a day where the viels between the worlds were their thinnest and the boundaries between the living and the dead were lax.

Which meant that, for at least one day of the year, Kaz felt...healthy.

Not that Luke would know the difference, though. Kaz has met him only shortly after he fed. So he was in equally of good as a mood as he was then, if....

Okay, let's face it, Kaz was nervous.

He was dressed in a black suit with a simple fox mask covering his face. In his left hand, Kaz held a boutonnière with simple fall flowers and a silver raven pin. He wrapped his right hand against Luke's door. He swallowed.

Luke had just stepped out of the shower, his hair was disheveled and out of his eyes for once. "I should probably get a hair cut." He thought grimly to himself. Luke shrugged and set about preparing for a nice, relaxing study session. The ball was most likely gearing up to start, as the dorms had been nearly empty for a while now. He was at peace, his boots and jacket were off to one side. Without all of his heavy clothing on, it was painfully apparent just how thin Luke was.

Luke caught sight of himself in the mirror and sighed. He'd never be able to put on muscle mass like his older brother and father. He more closely resembled his mother, slight frame and hair color, when it wasn't dyed of course. On top of studying, Luke had created a small alter on his desk, the candles were lit, and a small offering of bread was placed before it.

Of course, it was nothing like the alter his mother had created back home for such holidays, but it was better than nothing. "The air is strange.." He said to himself absentmindedly. Luke shivered, although he was perfectly warm. This holiday was always intimately personal for each household. Luke shrugged to himself once again, and straightened his solid black T-shirt. "Now then, to start on studyi-.."

The distinct sound of knuckles on wood drew Luke's attention to the door of his dorm. Warily, Luke removed his bracelet and allowed his mind to scan the area. The emotions emanating from beyond the door were strangely familiar, although the nervous air about the person was an intense shock to Luke, who nearly began to worry himself despite being perfectly fine.

Luke quickly closed the gap between his bed and the door and turned the knob. Upon opening the door, his eyes widened in shock at an immaculately dressed Kaz.

"K-kaz?! What are you doing here?!" Luke said, in equal parts shock and awe. He caught himself as his eyes roamed over how well dressed Kaz was. "No. Bad Luke. Focus." He mentally slapped himself, Luke was so engrossed in the fact that Kaz was actually standing in front of him, that he forgot his current attire, consisting of socks, a T-shirt, and shorts. Something that would normally mortify Luke, if he was caught in such a vulnerable state.

For some reason, the site of Luke in his shorts and socks and t-shirt was...kind of adorable. Kaz wasn't sure why. He wasn't sure what to do with these feelings. It must be the holiday, he told himself, making him thinking about curling up on the couch with the other boy and single cup of hot apple cider and watching scary movies until--

Jeezes, Kaz.

"Hey," Kaz grinned at him, his teeth sharp beneath the mask. His normal glamour was fading in and out and snippets of the real Kaz were visible every now and then, just glimpses of something a bit more elvish.

"Tonight is the masquerade, and, well, I thought rather than going alone, it would be more fun if I had someone go with me," Kaz said.

Oh god Kaz why, that was such a lame thing to say.

"And you were the person I wanted to spend this night with," he said, lifting his lips into just the faintest of smirks.

Was it charming?

Kaz hoped it was charming and not creepy.

"I'm not sure how they celebrate Samhain in Norway, but it's supposed to be a wild ride here on the island," he said.

Luke smirked slightly at the comment about Samhain. Normally if Kaz had come over during Alfablot back home, no one would've answered the door due to the intimate nature of the holiday.

Although on the other hand, Luke just about died. Someone wanted to go to a social event, with him. Willingly. He was so preoccupied with being dumbfounded that he missed the slight change in the other boy's appearance. However by the time he had tuned back in, all was normal once again. Luke's mind had gone into overdrive as it tried to come up with various responses to the situation at hand.

Someone who he had met quite literally by accident, was now standing outside his dorm room and was asking him to go somewhere with him. He couldn't find the correct words, so his mouth decided to take matters into its own hands. He blurted out a sentence in rapid Norwegian, Luke then blushed as he realized what he had just done. He attempted to compose himself, and then responded more slowly, in English this time.

"I-I'd love to go with you..but I'm not sure what I should wear.." He said sheepishly. Yes, he had a suit from home stashed in his closet, but as for a mask, he only had one option. An option he dreaded with every fiber of his being, as it meant he had to rely on a gift from his cousins. Luke bit his lower lip in concentration before he decided upon a course of action. "Well..I can throw something together..I-I just don't want to take up your time..with waiting for me to get ready and all.." Luke trailed off quietly, his eyes finding the floor very interesting just then.

"It's fine, it's fine," Kaz said, lifting up a hand when Luke suddenly became very interested in the floor. "Listen, I just showed up out of nowhere, hoping to surprise you. It would have been a big surprise to me if I found you ready to go. Actually, I'd...probably have guessed that you were going with someone else. Which would have made me less happy. so I'm happy to wait."

Oh god, Kaz, what the hell was with that verbal vomit?

He was jittery, he realized, but in a perfectly good way. The idea that he was going to go with Luke to the masquerade was a bit like finding out he was going to....

he wasn't sure.

Maybe stay alive. it felt like staying alive. He felt very alive.

It was just Samhain, he reminded himself. That's the only reason he felt like this.

"Did you have anything like this back in Norway?" Kaz struck up the conversation while he waited for Luke.

Luke blushed furiously as he put two and two together. "He's happy..to go with me?" The idea was totally foreign to Luke, who had spent the majority of his life as either a tool to be used, or that one kid who no one ever seems to remember. "Y-yeah..my family celebrated Alfablot in Norway..it's kind of like Samhain.." Luke trailed off, lost in thought once again.

He mentally slapped himself as he realized he was still holding the door open, and Kaz was still sitting outside. His mother would have been mortified at his lack of hospitality, even if Alfablot was a holiday that waved the basic rules of hospitality.

Luke sheepishly opened the door wider and gestured for Kaz to come in. "I-I'll be right back!" He stammered as he was now painfully aware just how "under dressed" he was. Luke darted into his room and retrieved the suit his mother had sent over along with the few other possessions he owned, as well as the intricately made mask of darkened glass. It resembled the wings of a Raven, spread in flight. Luke carefully took both the mask and his suit, and then darted across the main room to the bathroom.

It only took him a moment or two to get dressed and all sorted out, although he was very nervous about the entire idea of being surrounded by people all night long. "Quit freaking out, you're fine." He muttered to himself in an unconvincing manner.

Steeling his nerves as if he was about to charge a line of armored nights, he slid the mask on, and stepped out into the living room. His suit was jet black, with dark gray feathers superimposed on the fabric. His cousins had thought it was a wonderful birthday present at the time, even if they both were well aware Luke didn't do formal events.

"Well..how do I look?" He asked Kaz, questioning why the other boy's opinion mattered so much to him.

Kaz was glad he wasn't a vampire because he stepped in eagerly to Luke's apartment and did his best to not look through every single thing in the room. The part of his brain that he couldn't turn off told him that maybe he should steal something: something small, but vaguely important. A wallet was too suspicious, but a family photo, or even a remote control, would cause enough distress to feed Kaz for an entire day.

But he was okay for right now. It was Samhain. Kaz was okay.

He had another brief thought: maybe he was okay because he was closer to being dead than alive. He swallowed and Luke came out and Kaz's breath caught in his throat.

"Damn dude," Kaz said, trying to sound casual, but the fact that he'd called the other boy dude betrayed that. "You look freaking amazing. I'm kind of jealous that you can just look that great in only a few minutes!"

Kaz realized he wasn't sure what to do now. He was fidgeting with his hands, and then he remembered.

"oh, hey, we can't go to a samhain ball without.." Kaz hooked his hand into his pocket and pulled out the boutenier he'd brought for the other boy. It was made of braided wheat, appropriate for the fall season, with a single dark red mum in the center like a drop of dried blood.

"What is Alfablot like?" Kaz asked. He pushed a strand of hair behind his ears, which were significantly more pointed again.

Luke blushed furiously at the praise. It was the first time someone had actually complimented him without the intent to drag him out of a bad mood. He wasn't sure how to handle it, he muttered out an uncomfortable "Thank you." Once again fixing his eyes to the floor. He had a hard time believing it, after all, he wasn’t exactly the most stunning person on Earth.

Luke bashfully plucked at his suit, before tentatively bringing his eyes up to look at Kaz. “I-I’m just glad I found something this quick..” He mumbled before his eyes once again dropped to the floor. Luke wasn’t exactly sure why he felt so inept today. He chalked it up to the energy in the air, or that he was just having an off day.

Luke fidgeted in place before he settled on biting his lip in concentration. He nearly missed Kaz’s words as he revealed one of the most beautiful things Luke had ever seen. For once in his life, Luke was caught off guard. His eyes widened in surprise, and he gasped. He took a hesitant step forward, and then stopped.

“I-is that for me..?” He asked, almost as if he was afraid the answer would be yes. Luke still couldn’t comprehend what would compel someone to go to such lengths for him. Even if it was just supposed to be a mutual “get out of the dorm room” night. He shook his head slightly, and managed to pull himself out of his inner monologue long enough to answer Kaz’s next question.

Luke stared for a moment at the unusual shape of Kaz’s ears. However he quickly recovered and began to speak as if he had not noticed anything. “Alfablot is..” He paused to collect his thoughts before continuing. “It’s usually celebrated with your immediate family..and normal rules of hospitality are ignored. It’s an intensely personal thing. Talking with your ancestors and all…”

Luke trailed off as his mind strayed into memories of days gone by. Silent evenings spent with his family honoring those that came before. “It can be strange to some.” He said with a soft chuckle. Luke shrugged and occupied himself with bashfully tapping his foot against the carpeted floor.

"Yeah," Kaz said, passing Luke the boutonniere. "I never really had the opportunity to go to anything like this, but in a lot of the books I read, any big dance was also connected with flowers."

Kaz realized that this might be a little bit uncomfortable for luke, having a guy he only met once showing up with flowers and trying to whisk him away to a ball on a night when he would normaly be having a personal celebration with his family.

He felt fine, but Kaz made sure to note this anyway, because he never knew when he needed to twist the situation.

"In Poland, there is not so much samhain as there is Dziady," Kaz explained. He held the door open for Luke, anticipating that they would likely be walking to the ball unless Kaz caved and ordered a taxi or something. "It's a bit more solemn, with everyone visiting graves of ancestors and lighting candles. Not quite the celebration I'm expecting here."

Kaz considered something, and then finally, he made a confession as they walked, "My family lived in a but more of a rural area, so it was also the night they would start the slaughters for the winter animals. People used to think we were doing animal sacrifice to the dead and to the fae."

Kaz shook his head and cast Luke a wry grin.

"If they only knew the fae were real, i imagine they wouldn't make jokes like that so lightly," he said. He gave Luke another quick, appreciative glance and said, "Shall we be on our way?"

Luke was enraptured. He was still on cloud nine when Kaz had begun speaking again. He shook his head to clear his stray thoughts and then focused on what he was being told. He'd never understood the somber attitude several cultures took to death. It was part of the natural cycle of life, sure they might be gone, but they'll always be living on in another sense of the word, life.

"I've heard stories about Samhain..but I didn't think people still celebrated it." Luke mumbled, his eyes still locked on the boutenier he had received from Kaz.

He listened as Kaz told him he grew up in a rural area, and what took place on nights such as this one. Luke wasn't particularly phased by it, his father had been very religious, and had taken Alfablot very seriously.

Luke grinned back, despite trying to remain composed. "If people knew that half the things on this Island were real, they'd be in for a real culture shock." He said quietly. At Kaz's prompting, Luke nodded.

"Y-yeah, I'm kind of excited.." Luke said in a quiet voice. Which in itself was odd, as excitement wasn't a feeling Luke was used to feeling when confronted with many people in one area.
