Appearance & Personality:
Key points:
- Tall, fair skin, brown eyes. Well-dressed. long fingers, sly smile. Freckles.
- Perfectionist, soft spoken, perceptive. Manipulative and cunning.
General Appearance:
Kaz doesn't actually know what he looks like. It is hard for him to determine what has been part of the glamour placed on him by his parents when he was pretending to be the real Kazimierz, what he expects himself to look like, and what he actually looks like. He honestly doesn't know. It's a bit of a point of contention, really.
There are a few definitive traits that Kaz keeps hidden with a glamour. This is part of the real Kaz. He has pointed ears, black eyes, and too many teeth--although, all his teeth are straight and white. He simply has a lot of them.
The Kaz most people see looks like an average human teenager. He is rather tall, but not noticeably so, and is rather slender and trim. He has long fingers, fair skin that tans easily, and almond shaped eyes accented by high cheekbones. He has a sharp smile that gives the appearances that Kaz is always laughing at some kind of inside joke.
His hair is light and his eyes are a dark brown. When he tans, Kaz sometimes has a small splattering of freckles across his nose and shoulders. He has a somewhat ethereal quality to him, as though he is trying too hard to be ordinary and some of his natural beauty shines through. He is handsome in a way that is pleasing to the eye without drawing too many second looks. Kaz does not have the highly charged aura of the other fae.
A noticeable trait about Kaz is that he tends to be well dressed. His clothes tend to fit him as though they were tailored--which is sometimes the case. Kaz does well with sewing and alterations, although he's only done this for himself. His outfits are rarely wrinkled, always clean, and tend to be in neutral colors. He smells faintly of cloves and sandalwood.
While Kaz's eye site is better than a normal, he occasionally needs to wear glasses if his health is poor.
Personality:
Once Kaz realized he didn't have a soul, he stopped acting like he did.
That's not to say he still isn't kind and considerate to his classmates, teachers, and casual acquaintances. Kaz is generally polite, soft spoken, and gentle. He is a perceptive student and raises his hand often. He is generally skilled at mathematics and art.
He has a fondness for origami and loves to make paper cranes out of completed exam papers; there are several hundred strung up in his bedroom. He is happy to help carry groceries for an elderly woman or provide instructions home to a lost couple.
Of course, if he can, Kaz will provide the wrong instructions. He'll do it in a such a way that the couple will doubt themselves rather than Kaz.
Kaz doesn't like to do bad things, but when he does, Kaz does his best not to feel guilt. he is getting pretty good at it. Since he needs to be involved in the creation of misery, Kaz likes to be as discrete as possible. He likes to say, "It's okay. Come out and have a good time with me!" rather than telling someone not to study for an exam.
Kaz learned he can't trust anyone other than himself. He will have friends and lovers, but no one he feels especially close to. Kaz wants to feel close to someone. Desperately. Kaz wants to be saved but believes he has to save himself.
Kaz will stay in a friendship or a relationship right up until he starts to feel too vulnerable. Once it reaches that stage, he will sabotage the relationship and feed off the misery it produces. The keywords with Kaz's sabotage is subtly. It's very easy for the other party to think, "We just grew apart" or "we're both busy" or to doubt themselves.
Kaz is also a bit of a perfectionist. He likes to do things over and over again until he gets them right. This includes sex, of which Kaz tends to be good at, but he doesn't have a particularly strong sexual aura like some other fae might. As a lover, Kaz is initially warm and attentive but tends to lose interest in relationships fairly quickly.
Species: Fae, Changeling
Kaz is a changeling, which means he was a fairy child left as a replacement for a stolen human child. He has several traits granted to him by his fae blood, but he is also cursed. Kaz needs misery to stay alive. Without it, he becomes progressively sicker until he dies.
Key Points:
- Fae/Changeling. Allergy to iron, no soul, ability to glamour self and utilize magic. Has a secret name.
Cursed to feed on misery. Must be misery of others. More powerful affect if Kaz causes the misery. - Without misery, Kaz will die.
Fae Heritage:
As a pure-blood fae, Kaz has several advantages—and disadvantages-- over a human.Minor increase in senses:
His senses are just a little bit better. Kaz can hear, smell, taste and see far better than a normal human. (However, he will punch anyone who dare makes a “Kazimierz, what do your elf eyes see?” joke.) The downside, however, is that Kaz is very particular to taste. He prefers the extremes: either very, very fresh fruits and vegetables, or something pickled like sour kraut or kimchi. He is not strictly a vegetarian but it is rare for him to consume meat.
Kaz tends to heal a little faster than a normal human and need less sleep, but he must still rest.
Lack of a Soul:
Kaz does not have a soul, so any magic or power that affects the soul of a creature will be unable to affect Kaz. For example, a succubus that feeds by slowly draining the energy of a soul will be unable to feed on Kaz. It is nearly impossible for him to make a deal with a demon. However, the same magic that may affect demons or undead creatures may affect Kaz. Holy water, prayer beads, or consecrated ground might affect him, but it would depend on the circumstances.
Weakness to Iron:
Like many fae, Kaz has an allergy or weakness to iron. Kaz has built an immunity to it from years living as a human. Turning door knobs or touching exposed iron for temporary periods would not cause an immediate reaction. Should the iron be held against his skin for a duration of more than a few seconds, Kaz will have a burn similar to a sunburn. After an extended period, his skill will blister.
While Kaz’s injuries tend to heal fairly quickly, injuries sustained by iron will take a considerably longer time to heal.
Sensitivity to Rowan & Ash Wood, Holly Berries:
While not nearly as powerful as his allergy to iron, Kaz also has a faint allergy to rowan, ash, and holly wood. The physical reaction is less intense and visible. Kaz simply feels nauseous and uncomfortable. He tends to avoid large winter festivals where holly berries are strung.
While he is not allergic or sensitive, a person who throws foxglove at Kaz will be able to see past his glamour. A person who dreams of Kaz with foxglove under his pillow will dream of Kaz's real nature.
His True Name:
The problem with being a changeling is that Kaz has two sets of names.
His birth name and the name of the child he replaced became interwoven. Technically, he is Mikolaj Kazimierz Rryszard Radoslawski III. When he was a small child, his real parents called him Miko.
He detests the name Miko. Not only does it remind him of the parents that gave him it, up also provides a hint of his true name. Should his full name ever be revealed, the speaker of his true name would be able to cause Kaz to spill his secrets and fulfill an indebted favor. Kaz would not be able to rest until this favor was fulfilled.
Inability to Lie:
Kaz cannot outright lie. However, that does not mean he cannot be deceptive. Kaz loves to bend the truth. Additionally, if Kaz believes something to be true, he will be able to speak it.
For example, if Kaz saw a man get hit by a car and felt his lack of pulse, Kaz would be able to say “that man is dead” even if that man were actually truly still alive.
Glamour:
Kaz's glamour is more of a passive ability, not an active one. Where he to take training or study, it is likely that Kaz would be more able to control the glamour that surrounds him. For the sake of the game, Kaz's glamour simply makes him look human.
When he replaced the real Kazimierz, Kaz's parents placed a glamour on him to make Kaz take on the physical characteristics of the child he replaced. It also hides his more abnormal features, such as the pointed ears, black eyes, and teeth. It also dulls the ethereal quality that surrounds him.
Kaz makes no active effort to hide that he is fae. Now that he is on and island where magical creatures are accepted, Kaz feels no reason to pretend he is anything other. That's not to say he goes around advertising it, but where someone to have the ability to see through glamours, they'd be able to see Kaz's true nature and he would have no shame.
Future Goals:
Should plots progress, I would be interested in letting Kaz explore the ability to use magic inherent in most fae. This future power would be worked through a moderator and would be plot dependent. It is likely Kaz would have the ability to play music that would ensnare or hypnotize others. Right now, Kaz is too sickly to utilize most forms of magic.
The Curse: Feeds on Misery
Physical Symptoms:
Kaz was cursed before he was born to need misery to survive. Most changelings that are swapped for human children are sickly fairies and Kaz is no exception. Without regularly consuming misery, Kaz becomes physically ill. The initial stages include fatigue, body aches, and chills. His body temperature lowers. Headaches are common. Kaz also notices a decrease in his eye site and will often wear glasses to read.
As it progresses, Kaz tends to develop symptoms similar to a cold or flu: sneezing, chills, fever, nausea, upset stomach. He will bruise and bleed easily. Bloody noses are not common.
In extreme cases, Kaz's organs would begin to fail, resulting in a life-threatening situation. Kaz prefers not to let it get this far ever again. His survival is his number one priority.
Magical interventions to "cure" Kaz tend to be temporary at best.
Types of Misery:
Kaz can be sustained by the general angst and despair of others, but the stronger the misery, the more healthy Kaz becomes. The most surefire way for Kaz to sustain himself is to help cause the misery or set it in motion some way.
For example, while the general misery from the stress and tension of finals week might make Kaz feel perky and healthy for that week, playing a small role or interveaning so a person would fail his exam keeps Kaz fed and healthy for far longer.
If the misery is supernatural in nature, it's even better, because there is something about supernatural misery that helps fuel Kaz. Not only does he feel better, he feels more powerful. Kaz is especially drawn to causing this sort of misery.
Kaz cannot survive on his own misery. It must be the misery of others.
Inability to utilize most magic:
While most fae can utilize an extensive degree of magic with or without training, Kaz is unable to accomplish more than the most basic skills due to his physical health being relatively poor.

- Kaz became progressively sicker and sicker.

The Early Years: Tempting Fate
Kaz could never be an ordinary faerie.
He has his parents to blame for that.
His parents were ambitious and cunning. Both talented musicians, they were well-known at solstice celebrations throughout Europe where they would play music so enchanting that even mortals would hear it and wander into their fairy rings. They spent an equal amount of time in the lands of the fae and the lands of human, flitting between the two and causing mischief and good times everywhere.
When his mother became pregnant, the couple had a grand plan. What if they could steal the blessing of a Dola to ensure that their son’s musical ability would surpass even their own?
Their well-laid plans came awry when the Dola was alerted to their plan. She took their plan as a personal slight against her. How dare this couple think her gifts, the gift of fate for mortals, would be utilized on a fae child without her knowledge? Did they think her daft?
To spite Kaz’s parents, The Dola cursed him before he was even born.
“May your child only know the taste of misery,” she spat. And then, to spite them even further, she placed the gift of musical prodigy on a human child born the same time as Kaz.
Unfortunately, the Dola underestimated his parent’s desire for musical talent. Kaz was raised as their own son for some time. He picked up speech quickly, able to construct full sentences as a toddler. He was an intelligent child and a quick learner, but no matter how hard he tried, kaz could not make his parents happy. They seemed distracted.
The Childhood Years:
When they finally found the human child with the gift for music, they swapped Kaz with the real Kazimierz, leaving their sickly son in his bed instead. The human couple sensed something had happened, but couldn’t quite place their finger on it. Their son had a good vernacular and picked up Polish and English quickly. He was a good student. He did his chores, was active in Church and sang in the choir. He picked up the flute and the guitar and while Kaz’s music ability is technically good, but it’s missing something. It’s like when a person can dance well when following steps but can’t feel the music on their own.
Unfortunately, Kaz was sickly. He tried so, so hard to be good. He did everything right.
One evening, his parents had a priest over and prepared to give Kaz his last rights. When he went to bless him, the priest saw through the glamour that Kaz’s real parents had placed on him. He took Kaz and shoved him into the furnace and, to his parent’s great distress, rather than burn, Kaz leapt up into the chimney in surprise. The glamour around him had vanished in haste and they were left with a pointed eared child clutching and trembling.
Their despair was great and for the first time, Kaz felt healthy.
Unfortunately, now he was in despair. His life was a lie. Everything he’d been taught to follow didn’t matter.
His parents would never love him. He had tried too hard. They were trapped with their son and miserable, and the more Kaz tried to do right by them, the worse they became, which is ironically what kept him alive for so long.
When a letter came inviting their young son to attend Starlight Academy, they went to tell Kaz to pack his bags, but he was already ahead of them.
The irony of Kaz’s parents is that he is a considerably talented fae. He can utilize magic to a great degree. Where they to have raised him as a proper fae, who knows what he could have become.
