Winter was strange.

To the crocodile, it felt as it the world turned to something foreign and alien. It was cold, and frozen water fell from the sky to coat everything in fluffy white. Being a reptile, it was hard not to give into the instinct to find someplace warm and curl up to sleep. Walks was determined though, to figure out the season and acclimate to it, as best as he could. His first attempt to venture outdoors saw him stepping outside in a minimal amount of clothing, as was his normal habit--which was a mistake.

After retreating to retrieve appropriate gear for the temperature, he wandered back outside, finding warmth and safety in a plush, thick jacket and multiple layers of clothing. Snow crunched beneath his booted feet as he took to meandering around the school's grounds, exploring and making mental notes about how winter affected the environment. During his journey he noticed various little figures being made out of snow by some of the students. Walks stopped to watch them work, one dark brow raised curiously.

It wasn't as if the werecroc was naive to the concept of effigies, but all the ones he was used to seeing were made out of sandstone or other materials. This...this snow seemed like a poor choice of it.

However, Walks was intrigued.

And so he decided to try his hand at it...Awkwardly rolling up large balls of snow to work to construct a snowman. The process really wasn't going as smoothly as it was for the students he had been watching. A low huff escaped him as he tried to get one of the smaller snow globes to rest atop the larger base one.

Winter had come early.

Or so it seemed. Genevieve didn’t know much about winter—she hadn’t experienced many, and last year’s winter had been her first on the island. She didn’t know yet what the typical environment was for this place; was this winter truly early, or had last year been late? Or was there no set calendar with these things?

In her schedule, which she planned by the hour, she had marked off a little bit of down time to do something “fun.” Today she decided to take a walk outside and see the snow. Her shoes were not ideal—boots, but not winter boots, not boots that could handle snow—but she didn’t let that stop her. She wore a scarf and a jacket, and that kept her warm enough.

Outside, the students had built snowmen, made snow angels, and imprinted messages in the snow with their feet. Genevieve smiled. And then, as she looked around, she saw someone around her age struggling to make a snowman.

“Hello!” she called out, walking toward him. “Would you mind terribly if I joined you?”

Despite the fact that he was so fixated on trying to get these slippery snow globes to sit atop one another, his senses were still quite open to his surroundings. They had to be, as most of the time he was always on guard, even when he was technically "off duty". So when he heard footsteps approaching, he slowly straightened his posture and glanced up, somewhat sluggish. Despite the fact that his human body was warm-blooded, all this cold made him feel kind of lethargic.

There was a small, human-looking person coming towards him. Walks blinked at her, eyes narrowing some as he looked them over during her approach. She didn't appear to be hostile, and she didn't smell dangerous, although...She had some strange scents about her. However, most people at the academy had some sort of odd smell about them so he simply filed away the detail for later.

As she came nearer, he crossed his arms over his chest idly, his brow furrowed minutely. After a short stretch of silence, he shifted his weight from one booted foot to the other, then nodded at his failed snowman.

"...You...know...how?" Each word came slowly, heavy and awkward like molasses on his tongue. He cocked his head to the side questioningly for added emphasis.

As she walked closer, Genevieve realized just how small she was compared to the giant building a snowman. She tilted her head back fully to look up at him, and though she felt somewhat intimidated, she figured that anyone building a snowman had to be gentle.

“Yes, I do,” she said. “My name is Genevieve. You can call me Gen or Eve if you like.”

Reaching in to her coat pockets, she slipped on a pair of gloves, and wiggled her fingers before bending down and pushing a pile of snow together. “I’m a little sloppy at it,” she said, “but here, I’ll make a base.”

Once she had pushed and packed some snow together, Genevieve rolled it, and then sculpted it with her thumbs into a perfect sphere. She knelt on the ground next to the base, and looked up at the giant beside her.

“This is the bottom,” she said. “We need to make a middle, like the others.” She pointed at another snowman. “That needs to be just a little bit smaller than the base, but not too small. Wanna try?”

The reptile gave a slow nod of his head. He was thankful for the assistance. All the kids made the task seem so much easier than it was. His gold gaze drifted between the snowman-in-progress and the small human before him. Soon, she was telling him her name...Thankfully with a nickname to follow, as he wasn't sure he would have been able to do her name justice, and he didn't want to be disrespectful.

Walks raised one hand to his chest, "Pryhersobek," He responded smoothly, before continuing at his usual slow, methodical pace, "...Walks...with...Sobek," Here he gave a low, contemplative rumble, "'Walks'...OK too..."

Introductions taken care of, he fell silent once more, content to listen to Gen speak as she worked. Once she finished, he gave another slow nod and knelt down to start working on the middle sphere. With some work, he gathered enough to make a decent sized ball, but furrowed his brow slightly upon noticing that it was considerably more lumpy than the base.

He glanced over to Gen and cocked his head uncertainly.

Genevieve nodded slowly as he told her his name. He spoke slowly, which she wasn’t used to—it wasn’t that she was an impatient sort, only that she liked to do things fast, and the people she surrounded herself with (or found herself enveloped by) were often the same way.

“Lovely to meet you, Walks,” she said.

As he put together the midsection of the snowman, Genevieve stood back and watched, wanting to give him the space to make it without crowding him. At every moment he did something differently than she would have, she took a moment to remind herself not to micromanage. She would wait until he asked.

“Here,” she said. “It’s okay. Easy to fix.”

She took her hands and began smoothing the lumpy parts down. When this lead to the midsection becoming smaller, or uneven, she gathered more snow and packed it in, then evened it out.

“See? You make it smooth.”

The reptile nodded slowly as he listened to Gen speak, head cocking slightly to the side as he watched her work. A small, contemplative rumble reverberated from his throat. Once she was done with smoothing the globe out, he crouched down and hefted it up easily, to settle it atop the first snow ball acting as the base.

Once he was certain it was stable, he straightened up and cast a glance around at their surroundings, noting the other snowy effigies in the distance. Returning his gaze to Gen, he arched an eyebrow curiously, his attention lingering on her even as he knelt down to gather more snow.

"What...for...?" He queried finally, "They...Guard...School...or?"

At his question, Genevieve cocked her head to the side. She understood what he was asking, but she didn’t quite know the answer.

“I don’t think so,” she said. “They can’t guard anything—they’re made out of plain water.”

Which could, by the proper student or teacher, be used to guard the school. But she didn’t think that was the purpose in this instance.

“Mostly they’re just for fun,” she said. “People decorate them with stones and sticks so that they have eyes, a mouth, some buttons. Usually use a carrot for a nose. It’s just… to play.”

She smiled up at him. That was the best she could do.

“Would you like to try making his head?”
