A blizzard of hope

Noelle casually crossed her arms as sort a a comfortable thing, yet in a way of rebellion. She did not want to forgive her brother for attempting murder, and she doubted she would any time soon. Unless she knew he really changed, she wasn't going to change her mind soon. " I believe it's easy to say if you're looking at another person's life, but it is hard when it's your own life." She lifted her chin just a little, speaking with a slightly harder tone. She stood up, suddenly not feeling like sitting anymore. Noelle was starting to feel a bit of her bitterness coming to her, and she decided that it was best to leave it at that, or she may just storm off in a fury.

She went across the small room, standing with her back to the window, and Jacob, and created new small window, that was it wouldn't look weird for her to be looking at an ice wall. "I see, well, ordinary is good in most cases. As long as that's not all to your persona." She sighed. People never understood her. She was just a misunderstood girl with a bad past, who wanted a friend that wouldn't preach to her about her hard ways. The teacher seemed nice, but maybe talking about her past to anyone was just as bad idea. She decided to warn anyone if they ever entered that zone.

Jacob silently observed Noelle's reaction to his wisdom, and there it was, just as he expected. Youthful rebellion. He suppressed a smile at his borderline super ability of precognition regarding the matters of young people. But it wasn't a power. It was just something adults acquired at some point in their lives. Usually it was the mark of finally growing up. The point when the advice that they themselves had dismissed and scoffed at as youngsters finally clicked, and they wondered why they never heeded it when they could have most used it. Again, as a teacher, he saw it more often than other people. Noelle would understand his advice in due time. There was no point in pushing it.

Noelle was turning out to be quite hard about the subject of her brother as well, which only exacerbated her reaction. He watched her walk off in a bit of a huff, and it was like he could read her mind still. She wanted to get away from that subject, and even went so far as to put physical distance between them. From behind her, he nodded in acknowledgement quietly.

"Hey now, Noelle. I may not have any powers, but I'm not some white bread teacher."

Far from it in literal terms. Jacob was quite a dark-skinned man.

"I may not look it now, but I used to be quite the hellion when I was your age. I've just mellowed with age."

Noelle felt a little tension as she looked out at the street. The cars driving by, some people pointing to her ice castle made her smile. She didn't mean to block people out, or hurt their feelings, it just happened. Her scale of "okay" and "too far" was set differently than most people, and that's how it was since that one dreadful night. She moved just a little at his comment about white bread. She wasn't exactly sure what he meant, but she was sure he meant it in the best of ways. She had no doubt of his kindness, but she felt like some one her age would understand more. Adults were always practical, and never up for scheming. most of them anyway.

"I may not look it now, but I used to be quite the hellion when I was your age. I've just mellowed with age."

Noelle laughed a little at that comment. Everyone was different as an adult from when they were younger, but she had no doubt of his youthful trouble making because of his earlier comment. She let a little sigh, and turned to sit back on the bench. " I know, but adults always say all that wise stuff, and they never really try to help understand, and then we feel just as bad. Not that I really feel bad, I've talked about it a lot, and it was a while ago. Eight years as a matter of fact." Noelle smiled. Hope was rising a gain, a little bit of happiness spread within her. Would it last. Probably, but you never knew with this girl.

Now it was Jacob's turn to cross his arms and tilt his head. But unlike Noelle, he didn't look angry or put off. Instead he looked like he was thinking but coming up with nothing, stumped. He wanted to make a comeback in the name of grown-ups, but he just wasn't pulling anything.

"Yeeeeaahh.... I suppose you got me there. We do that a lot, don't we?"

He looked at Noelle and shrugged.

"Can you blame us though? When you see someone going through a part of life you've already been through, you wanna give them some help, ya know? It's not that we don't understand, we just already know the answer and the outcome. Sometimes, anyway."

The two of them talking on the ice bench felt like the UN Summit of adult-adolescent relations. Jacob doubted that the generation gap would ever be fully filled, and that grown-ups and young people would forever be at odds until the end of time. All he had to do was look at history for mountains of evidence. But at least there could be some understanding on the personal level. Maybe Noelle would understand his fatherly/teacherly ways, and he would get a better grip of how to handle teenage girls.

"I know my dad rarely had the right advice for me other than generic, good-natured stuff. I was so unlike him when he was young, so he had no idea what to tell me when, lets say, I was being chased out of a house at gunpoint. Then again...... It's not like he needed any SPECIFIC advice for me then..."

Jacob looked out the ice window, reminiscing about his youth like a true old man. Then he was suddenly stuck with the existential dread that came with realizing that he was indeed getting that old.

Noelle couldn't stop the small smirk that crawled onto her face, as the teacher came up with not to much of a reply. She nodded as he shrugged. She supposed that's how adults always were, and teens always were. Teen wanted their freedom and as a result usually made mistakes, the adults knew would effect their later lives in a negative way. But it wasn't like she was going off on a man hunt to track her brother down for revenge, she just wanted a little understanding.

It's not that we don't understand, we just already know the answer and the outcome. Sometimes, anyway." Noelle nodded., " understand." She knew that was right, her parents told it to her all the time. She was to be careful in the decisions she made, and wise in the paths she chose. Her parents thought that going to the Academy was a very wise choice indeed, and they couldn't be more proud of their little snowflake. Noelle smiled happily as she thought about them, but she twitched uncomfortably. Her hoodie was making her rather hot, and Noelle hated heat. She only wore it because she didn't feel like getting a lecture from adults about catching a cold, then having to explain her powers. She grabbed the bottoms and pulled it off over her head, wrestling with it for a second, before pulling it over her hair, causing her shirt to rise an inch or two with it,and her hair to flop down in a mess. She placed it beside her huffily, fixing her shirt- an orange tank top. She loved this top. She'd found it on sale on a shopping spree with her friends, and it had been her most loved shirt since. Honestly, she would rather be wearing shorts too, but her black running pants didn't bother her to much. " I don't like the heat" she said a little annoyed by the messy hair her hoodie had caused her. She worked on getting each strand of blue hair back in its place.

"I just cannot imagine having skin-on-ice contact like you do."

He shook his head as he watched Noelle take off her own hoodie and yet still sit back casually on their ice bench. Just the thought ice sitting on his skin for longer than a few seconds made him shiver and shake.

"Speaking of which, are you the reason I don't feel that cold sitting on his thing? Cause if you are, I'd like the thank you. I like my warmth."

With a bit of a grunt, he stood up on his feet and stretch his arms, careful not to lose his balance. Then he checked to see if there was indeed a big wet spot on his pants from him sitting on the ice bench. Thankfully, Noelle's powers had seemingly kept the melting in check or something because there was no embarrassing spot. He sighed happily and looked out the window to the park and people around it. He waved at a passing few of them and looked out to the bench where his groceries were, thankfully, still sitting. Look a little farther out, he saw his apartment building, overlooking the park itself.

"So I assume you live in the Dorms in the Academy, right? Hm... I know how this is going to sound, but don't think I'm a creep. My apartment is nearby and I still need to drop off the groceries there. You want to head there and I can make you lunch before you head back?"

Noelle shifted on the ice bench slightly, listening but her thoughts ran free at the same time. The view was a good one, people could be amazed how just a few feet higher was better. Of course, she could build a life sized castle, but that would take several days fro total completion, and she doubted the park would allow it. She touched the ice bench, yes it was not as cold as it normally was, she forgot that she'd taken some coldness away. "Yes, of course, I thought it would make it easier for you to sit. Your welcome. " she sighed as she looked down at her purse, she still wanted to go shopping, really badly, but she didn't want to break up the conversation.

What was this? His food? Oh yes right, at least he had it in the ice castle to keep it cool. Her parents told her that honesty was always the bets policy, and honestly, she'd rather take a visit to his apartment when there were more people with her. She didn't mean to sound distrustful, but she did want to go shopping. Well, she was sure he would understand. "Well, you see, I came into the city to do some shopping, and it has to be like now, because I still have some homework to do." She reached into her purse and grabbed a watch, to check the time. 'oh my gosh, I didn't know it had gotten so late! I really gotta go, sorry, enjoy your food!" She grabbed his hand to shake it quickly, and walked down the steps, knowing he would follow. A surge of panic came over her, as she thought of the things she had left to complete.

"Ah. Good girl. Got your priorities straight."

Jacob let out a sigh of relief at her answer actually. He may have been offering to make her lunch purely out of thanks, and definitely not for any less-than-savory ulterior motive, but he had immediately regretted asking the question once it had left his mouth. No matter how platonic he made it, it was still a weird offer and he did not want to explain it to his new neighbors if they got a little suspicious of him bringing home a teenage girl for seemingly no reason.

He was still looking out the window when his hand was pulled away for a shake, and he smiled at her. His gaze went back out the window for a moment, admiring the view, but they he remembered that she was probably going to melt the castle very soon and he immediately took the to stairs.

"Hold up! Don't dissolve the place yet."

Descending the stairs was quicker than going up them, but Jacob still took a little while since he wanted to avoid slipping and cracking his head open. When he was finally out, he made a beeline for his groceries and grabbed them before heading back to Noelle.

"Alright. I was a pleasure to meet you, Noelle. I hope to see you in class some time.

Noelle was glad he understood. She waited patiently on the bottom level, eating some of the snow from her bowl. It represented food after all. As he carefully made his way down the stairs, Noelle wondered what kind of stores were in the city. Hopefully a great place to buy fancy dresses, and cute accessories. She shifted the strap of her purse as he went to grab his groceries, and then came back.

"Alright. I was a pleasure to meet you, Noelle. I hope to see you in class some time."

Noelle nodded. "You too, have a nice day." She stopped to turn around looking at her ice castle. She placed her hands flat out in front of her, as if telling someone to stop, clenched her fists, and spread her arms wide, spreading the snow to the sky, and just like that, her castle was gone. She turned once again, surprised to find a small crowd of people standing there watching. Suddenly, they burst into applause. Noelle bowed as gracefully as she could, and waved. And with that, she was headed into the city, to find her dress, and to continue life as it was, before her blizzard-or castle- of hope.
