A blizzard of hope

Noelle wouldn't blast anyone with ice unless it was for self defense. She did however, like to fill people's minds with the possibility. Noelle looked over at the tree. "It's okay now, what I give, that I can take away in full as well." She smiled as he observed the ice castle, especially when she was doing the inside. A welcome mat could have been a nice touch, but maybe next time she built something, she would add one.

"Wow. You could make a killing making ice buildings during the winter for tourists..."

Noelle laughed. It reminded her of all her students back at home, when she announced she was leaving. They were so upset, so she built them an ice tree house as a fair well gift. Of course, the summer heat would come, but all they had to do was blow on it. It was another power that came with being able to control such elements. If the person chooses, they can make their breath very cold, and simply breathe on something to reinforce its coldness. However, they could not simply breathe on a tree and freeze the thing, only a small part of it would freeze. But, when breathed on ice, it would make the ice colder, and stronger.
"I sold ice sculptures to my students parents in order to make money to buy a laptop." Sounded like a funny thing to most people, but Noelle remembered the days or carving and chipping, adding details till it was perfection.

"I think it looks great! But isn't your bottom cold sitting on that ice bench?"

"Of course not. I am immune to the cold. My powers would render me useless if I could be affected by the cold. I simply do not feel it. You know, when the temperature is so perfect in a room, you do not even notice it? That's what it feel like. Neither hot nor cold, or cool nor warm." Noelle did love to talk about her powers. She was excited to have a fun teacher like this, in the school time ahead.

Jacob spent a minute or two orbiting around Noelle's newly-built ice installation, observing her craftsmanship and the quality of the ice. Not that he knew anything about ice quality though. The only thing he knew was that it all looked really good. The ice was a pleasant blue clear and not foggy at all, so he assumed it was all more or less clean ice. It made him wonder if ice made from powers was okay to, say, ingest or put in a drink, or if he risked getting superpowers of his own by so much as licking it. He didn't think that would make all that interesting of a superhero origin story.

Circling back around to the front, Jacob tentatively stepped onto the ice drawbridge. Noelle sure was fine walking on her own ice, but he was willing to bet that magic ice was still as slippery as real ice.

"I suppose that makes sense. It would be dumb for you to get frostbite from using your own powers."

He would have loved to just have the power of cold immunity. Jacob was a warm weather guy. He would much rather be sweating and shivering, if given the choice.

"So m'lady, may I enter your castle? You think that bench could hold another?"

Slowly he was getting the hang of walking on the ice. When he reached the front door, he tried to brace himself on the frame, only to have to let go and switch hands because it chilled his hands.

Noelle was very satisfied with her work. Just a small demonstration of her possible power. She lovingly patted the walls with satisfaction and smiled. She nodded. How awful it would be if you couldn't physically stand your own power. She was glad for her power. And her night vision as well, of course. Sometimes, she liked to just munch on the snow she made, and it made her feel like nothing else could. It was like a medicine to her, and energizer, a spark of awesomeness.

"So m'lady, may I enter your castle? You think that bench could hold another?"

"Abso- *ahem* you may enter oh great knight, and what news do you bring of battle?" She had to hold in a giggle, she felt so silly. It had been a while since she'd had fun times like this. And with a most unexpected companion-a teacher at the Academy! She looked down, making sure that he was able to climb the small stairs safely. She laid her purse down beside her bench. Her shopping could wait for a few minutes, it was absolutely necessary after all.But she did dream of finding a beautiful new dress, something flowing and airy, and waltzing into the ballroom, a room she had heard of and yet had not visited, and finding a partner to dance with. Such a wonderful time it would be, he would a be in a nice suit, and they would dance and chat as the finest music played. Noelle snapped herself out of her thoughts. Maybe dress shopping was more important than she thought it to be. But then again. When would she meet anymore that she didn't cause to leave?

Well then, Jacob was not expecting Noelle to play up the medieval role so quickly. He thought he was being just a little cheeky with his address of "m'lady". However, it made his smile grow a little wider and made spirit warm just a little bit more to see Noelle having fun with it. There was solace to be had in Noelle acting like any normal young woman even with her powers.

Before coming to the island, Jacob had his assumptions about what his students would be like. He was no exception to the influence of pop culture, and he was more than a little conditioned to believe that these kids would not be in the best of shapes when it came to grappling with their abilities. Plus, as a teacher, he had more evidence than most to believe that these kids could easily be dangers to themselves and others, after seeing what young people could do to each other under normal, non-powered circumstances. To be sure, there probably would be an individual or two who would be in need of a calm, guiding hand. But Noelle was evidence to the presence of the contrary.

"I--(woah)--I bring good news, My Queen."

Jacob was still slipping every so often as he entered the ice castle, and especially as he ascended the stairs. He nearly reverted to going on all fours to make it up them. He did get up them safely in due time, and sat carefully on the ice bench. He shivered as his bottom rapidly cooled and he was suddenly concerned with having a big wet spot on his pants from the ice.

"The surrounding kingdoms abound with accolades and praise for raising your palace of ice and snow. Um, Verily you will be the envy of all the lands. And so on..."

Noelle smiled as Jacob made his way up the stairs safely. Although he did look a little silly, she was just glad that he wasn't hurt in anyway. She was glad to have seen a teacher and how they acted outside the classroom. She now looked forward to being in his class, seeing as the kind of person he seemed to be right now. She felt as if he could be a second father to her. A person to turn to if she was ever having, or in, trouble. She felt a safe sense around him, something that she had not known, not a for a while anyway.

"The surrounding kingdoms abound with accolades and praise for raising your palace of ice and snow. Um, Verily you will be the envy of all the lands. And so on..."

"I see" she said happily. " I suppose we must make them a town of snow someday then. But seeing as it is a busy day, they must wait. I shalst thank them for their compliments later." She figured that the bench was probably too cold for the man, so she drew some of the coldness out of it. That would hopefully make it easier, and more comfortable for him to sit on. "I suppose however, that I should probably disperse of the castle soon, else some one might complain about it taking up room in their beloved park."

It was a strange sensation to have his lower half be so cold, then suddenly not so. He knew he would eventually get acclimated to the chill of the bench, either through toughness or his bottom going numb, but he did not figure it would happen as quickly as it did. Hell, it was as if the cold had been drawn away from him and his butt, as strange as that may sound. He even hazarded a guess that it was Noelle's doing, and he eyed her for signs of supernatural meddling. Either she was good at hiding it or he was imagining things.

"You don't have to melt it just yet. You can let it stand for awhile. Let some people see it and admire it."

With the cold gone from him, he felt a little more at ease about leaning back into the bench and putting his arms up along the back.

"I was going to suggest that maybe you let the kids around here play on it. But then someone will slip and that's a whole mess of trouble you don't want on your head."

He could just imagine the fallout from some kid slipping on the ice. He had had enough of parents going to absurd lengths to care or "protect" their children from the various PTA's he had to deal with. The thought of those kinds of parents again made him shiver.

"But while we're up here, Noelle, tell me about yourself. I wanna know the girl behind the ice powers. We'll share, even. I'll a question of yours too."

Noelle felt a small cool breeze drift through the air. And, just as quietly as it came, it was gone. She nodded. She wished to stay for a little while longer, and enjoy her work. " I never melt things. It's not my job. I simply take it away. Pull the coldness out of it. Throw the snow and ice abroad until I need them again." He seemed more comfortable after she made the bench cooler, as he leaned back looking relaxed.

Noelle once again bobbed her head up and down. " I don't have the time or money to be sued if some child slipped and hurt themselves on my ice." she said with a little resentment. That's how people always were. Cowards. They couldn't face the simple truth, so they blamed it on some one else. They take matters into their own hands. That was Noelle's look on people anyway. She supposed it was because that't what her brother did, scarring her at such a young age. The fear that flashed in her mother's eyes as they house went up in flames. The wind storm of wrath her father sent to banish her brother away. Never to be heard of since.

"But while we're up here, Noelle, tell me about yourself. I wanna know the girl behind the ice powers. We'll share, even. I'll a question of yours too."

Wait what? her, talk about herself? 'Not a good idea' she thought herself, but she must say all that she could. "Alright, I shall tell you all the interesting parts, and see what you think afterward. I come from a family of elementalists. My father's is wind, my mother's water and, and.... uh for some reason, my brother got fire. Five years before I was born, when my brother was about a year old, my parents started a school for children with elemental powers. They taught me all about my powers as I grew, and my brother as well. i used to be the happiest of children. I loved to make things with my snow and ice, but then, my brother would always melt it. One day, when I was eight and he was fourteen, he attempted to kill us all by burning the house down while we slept. My mother and I ran from the house while my father took on my son. My mother used her water to put out the fire, and then my father sent my brother, Sam, away in a wind storm. We haven't heard from or about him since then. It's been eight years." Noelle fell silent thinking about it. It would probably make it hard for Jacob to respond, ti was always hard to reply to some one else's losses.

Jacob prepared himself for Noelle's story when she gave a little warning about it. He expected the worse. Possibly a dead parent or two, or a murder, or a revenge plot. A few of the students he had met and talked to personally already had backgrounds along those lines. It would seem as if special powers came at the price of a healthy childhood.

At first it all sounded quite nice and very interesting. A family of elementalists? That was pretty cool. He tried to imagine a family where everyone had a different elemental attunement, and how that exactly worked. Was it liked genetics, and the parents could predict what element that child would have based on their own elements? Or was it completely random? His questions were put to rest when her brother appeared in the story. There it was... The rub in her story.

"I see... I hope you find forgiveness for your brother, and that he's alright somewhere, perhaps learning from his mistake."

Jacob didn't know her brother, obviously, but he hoped for the best. He reached out and patted her on the shoulder, trying to give her a bit of strength. She didn't look like she needed it too much, but admitting such personal details must have been a little hard.

"And I'm sure your parents are proud to have a daughter so proficient in her element. I know I would. Now, it's your turn. Got a question for me?"

There were only a handful of people who had heard Noelle's life story. Some thought that she must be as delicate as a glass doll because of such scary things happening to her at such a young age. But, they were wrong. She was as hard as the side of this ice castle and planned on always being so. Her shield was up, and she was always on the look out for some one who was in idiot, or some one to do something like an idiot. Nonetheless, she did like people, but she always saw the bad in them, and compared that to the good. Some supposed it was self denial. Not able to stand her own imperfection so she looks for others. But that was not true either. Noelle figured that in relationships, it was always best to get the worst out of the way first, then move on to the best. She never would have been like that though, if the incident never happened. But she didn't mind herself, not at all.

"I see... I hope you find forgiveness for your brother, and that he's alright somewhere, perhaps learning from his mistake."

A strange noise came from Noelle's throat. A sound of doubt. "It's kind of hard to forgive some one who has never asked for forgiveness. If you'd seen the fire and hate in his eyes. He was going after me. He hated me more than my parents. I got the "good' element, I got the love and attention. No, I doubt he'll ever change." She sighed. Where was her wretched brother now? She'd rather not think about it. "Yes, I wonder, even as a teacher do you have an powers?"

"... Well, I believe that to be part of maturing as a good person: Offering forgiveness of your own accord, without waiting for them to request it..."

That was Jacob's sage advice after Noelle's reply. He purposefully avoided religious connotations whenever he spoke of his policy on forgiveness and second chances, knowing that it was often a bad idea to include them in casual conversation. But no matter how his beliefs lined up with this or that faith, he still felt as it was a good lesson to teach his young pupils. When the moment arose of course. He wasn't about to beat forgiveness over their heads if the time wasn't right or they weren't willing to hear it.

He found it curious, though, that Noelle aligned her brother's and her own elements with good and bad. That was a strange concept, but maybe he had to be an elementalist to understand. On the surface, it kind of made sense. Fire was generally associated with violence and destruction. But he just could not believe that it was just that simple. Fire was destructive and powerful, yes, but so was cold and ice. But used right, both were beautiful and helpful. Especially fire. Fire was square one in Man's evolutionary ascent.

"Oh, me?"

He chuckled nervously and rubbed the back of his head.

"No, actually. I don't have any powers of my own. That I'm aware of at least. I know. I know. It's pretty weird to have just a normal guy teaching at an Academy like this one, huh?"
