I got caught up in the wrong crowd

Genevieve Pierce

One of Genevieve's biggest talents was scoping out the enemy. Even with only a few months under their belt, they already knew where to get their resources and what to look out for, and they especially knew the names of the big players of the Underground. Defan, Baltimore and Sake were the top game pieces, big and organized enough that the smaller ones wanted to win their favor. Outside of the hierarchy, but important nonetheless, Vesper the corrupt cop and Soket the drug dealer. After that, the criminals were pretty diverse and spread out, not caring much for the hierarchy and just doing their own thing, like Val and that Fontana boy. Genevieve would know of them soon.

Their first year would be intel. Their second, action. Genevieve wasn't going to be content just watching all of this, no. They were chaos and war contained in a humanoid form, and fuck them if they thought they weren't going to shake the table a little. A lot. What can they say? They were ambitious.

So that was what they were doing that afternoon. Genevieve noticed some whispers among the information club and a shady group of kids, and they trailed far behind them, but every time they got close, they felt their aura and ducked behind the bushes. Fuck. This wasn't going to go anywhere. Whatever they were hiding, it was big, big enough to be cautious of everything that moved. And Genevieve couldn't even get close.

They hung near the secret meeting place, which was coincidentally near the High School building. It was pretty suspicious of them, a punk College student, to hang out with a bunch of kids, so they went ahead and lit a cigarette near the dumpster. If anybody asked, they were smoking.

Genevieve flicked the ashes into the trash.

Sure would be nice to get what they were hiding, though.

An Nam Il

There was something weird in the air, a strange sensation that Nam Il had noticed around the school for a while now but had never really taken the time to pinpoint. It was definitely some sort of aura, like the one that was characteristic of the Ishikawa family. That one was pure and simple power, the sort that told you yes, it came from that place up there and you might not really want to mess with it. This aura, however, was simply full of wrong. He had the sinking suspicion that something awful was probably going to happen but no evidence either way on whether it was true or not. That was the thing about aurae. They liked to lie a lot, unfortunately.

To be perfectly honest, Nam Il didn't care too much about academics. There just wasn't much point to it when he was already doing all of the work that would be assigned the following month. Homework was done, exams were. Well, he definitely wasn't studying for them but at the same time, he wasn't unprepared either. He still made it by with perfect scores. Near perfect on his worse days.

With a meek excuse, the boy ducked out of study hall, snapping closed the books that he had long since mastered and only really kept out for decoration and guilt for having already understood them all. High school, in short, was boring. C'est la vie.

That awful aura became stronger as Nam Il left the building. It was making his teeth jitter a little in anxiety. That was just plain strange. Okay, cut it out, me! It's just a little magic. Nothing that I haven't felt before or anything. Because, really. Nam Il had been legitimately attacked by demons before. This shouldn't have been any worse and the aura didn't even feel demonic to boot!

Curiously, he trailed the aura to a relatively shady wall of a nearby building. This was still Academy grounds so he wasn't particularly worried about his safety. Glancing over by the dumpster, what he found was. A perfectly normal person. The uneasy feeling was still there, though. He watched for a few moments as cigarette smoke curled up into the sky.

"Um, hello?" He called out. "Is everything okay over there?" It wasn't every day that people put out frightening aurae, after all.

Aw, shit. Genevieve knew the jig was going to be up the minute someone paid attention to them there. It was a little hard to stay inconspicuous, with their aura going on. No matter how much they tried to muffle it, it always spilled into the air. Genevieve's first response to the kid was to snarl and tell them to fuck off.

Usually, they'd follow their first instinct, but not today. Today, there was something more important than petty fights. Information. Power. Whatever discomfort the kid gave them was second priority to the small gathering happening in the supply shack across from them. Genevieve needed ears. It didn't have to be their ears. And kids, kids were always used to spy on stuff. They could send this kid to duck under the shack window and listen to whatever was happening.

That sounded a little too ambitious, but damn it, they weren't going to abandon this plan without giving it a shot first. Genevieve leaned against the wall and addressed the boy.

"Yeah, I'm peachy, kid. A little hard to say about your classmates over there in that shack, though. They're doing some real bad stuff. I know, because I know the bad people they're talking to. And it's not playground offenses. I mean drug pushing." Gen pursed their lips, humming in disappointment. "Ah, but that's... that's not really your problem, ain't it? Of course, you look like the decent sort. Come over here and let's talk about how you can help me nip this thing in the bud before your classmates start doing cocaine, yeah?"

Genevieve put out their cigarette and threw it in the dumpster. "Don't worry about my aura. It's just kinda funny like that. I wouldn't really hang out in the high school building if I'm as bad as I look, honestly. The campus security would arrest me."

An Nam Il

The feeling of fear grew a bit as Nam Il edged closer to this person. For the life of him, he couldn't figure out if they were supposed to be a girl or a boy. Or maybe the answer was supposed to neither if he couldn't readily decide? He concluded that the appropriate action to take here was to simply assume that they were a. Well. Them.

Still, if there was one thing that really excited Nam Il, it was the opportunity to be useful. Useful to somebody who looked like they were trying to do something right, even if maybe they weren't going at it the right way. Logically, he knew that if drug pushing really was going on, they should probably call campus security to be sure. But what if they were wrong? And what if security didn't believe them or didn't get there in time? So many things could go wrong.

Okay, to be honest, maybe that last part was just from the aurae. Even with that uncertain feeling, though, Nam Il was already won over. Their logic made sense. When all else failed him, there was always logic. Always.

He nodded with wide eyes. "Okay, sure! What exactly do you want me to do? Do you know who exactly will be over there?" The boy fidgeted a little anxiously, as if his eagerness alone wasn't enough. "I'm good at picking locks!" He blurted out. "Does that help?"

Aw, shucks. What a cutie. Genevieve was already won over. This kid was prime snitch material. They could get along just fine. They reached out to ruffle his hair, winking a bit. "Relaaax. I'm a soft spot for cute kids that know how to pick locks. Parents these days should teach their kids basic life skills, is what I think." They chuckled. "Call me Gen, kiddo."

Back to the matter at hand. The kid seemed eager and sincere enough. Not many crooks knew this, but the secret to a good snitch was to give them enough information to go on so they knew what to look for. "I don't really know their names, but I'm sure you're familiar with their type. You know those kids that dress in all black with edgy clip on earrings and sit at the back of the class? Well. They're not all hot air. They've been talking with Abia Defan's men. She's a big drug lord if you didn't know. I heard from a few rats Underground that they're paying them ten bucks an hour to smuggle in drugs inside the campus."

Genevieve led them to the edge of the building, the farthest they could get before their aura started spooking the kids in the shack. "That's the place. Originally, I wanted you to eavesdrop, but I just came up with something so much better. So here's the plan." They huddled up. "I want you to sneak into the back of the shack. When you get into position, I'll spook them all out of the place so fast they'll leave without taking their belongings. While I'm chasing them out, you take the big ledger inside and hide behind the dumpster. They wouldn't even know you were involved. Genevieve punched their palm with their fist. "Bam! We stop the operations in the school and piss off a major crime lord. We'd be vigilantes. Like Batman. I'm ready when you are. Give me a signal when you're in position!"

An Nam Il

Nam Il was a genius. This was a fact, proven through IQ tests and near perfect memory. He was, however, terribly sheltered and with all of the information that Gen was giving him, his first thought was that somebody had just dropped him right in the middle of some sort of crime show. His second thought was Oh God. Where was the sign up for this when I went looking around last week?

He nodded readily at what was being said to him, carefully adding Abia Defan to the list of people that he ought to be familiar with. "Okay, so I just need to go in, dig around, and get out fast. I guess on the surface, it seems simple enough." The boy couldn't help but feel downright cheerful about it. He was actually doing something useful and good for once! Somebody was asking him to do it, he wasn't just going off on his own. Only God knew how many times he'd dream about doing things like Batman and Robin Hood did on a regular basis.

"Don't worry about me, though. I'm pretty fast for my age. It'll be done in no time!" Nam Il gave Gen an enthusiastic salute before rushing off to do what he had been told to. Quietly, of course. It was, in his opinion, just to act like he was supposed to be there anyways. People tended to catch on pretty quick whenever somebody started acting like they were, well. Sneaking around. Nam Il knew that from experience.

As casually as he could, he approached the building, determined that nobody seemed to be really watching him, and slipped right in.

Genevieve got the cue. They materialized a baseball bat and ran head first towards the building, pushing their aura loud and wide so the people inside could feel it. Before they could even get that close, the kids were already freaking out inside.

"Hey, nerds! I know you're all in there! Cabel Soket ain't gonna like your drug pushing!"

When they got close enough, they peaked inside and smashed the hilt of their baseball bat lightly against the shed window and making it crack. The kids inside shrieked. They all ran out in terror, forgetting their drugs and their ledger. Genevieve made eye contact with the hidden Nam Il briefly before running after the kids and howling like a madman, making them run faster.

An Nam Il

Even though he knew it was coming, Nam Il still froze for a moment as Gen's aura suddenly pounded down on him furiously. For exactly three seconds, the boy thought and, moreover, genuinely believed that maybe it hadn't been such a good idea to get involved. He forcibly shoved the feeling away, however, knowing that wherever it had come from, it definitely wasn't purely him. Even if he was a little scared, at least his brain wouldn't just freeze up. It was only the aura, that was all. He had to remember that.

Peeking over the windowsill, he could clearly see Gen outside. Their eyes met and Nam Il grinned, an expression which was hidden by the wall. He just nodded to get the point across and waited for the noise of shoes on flooring to turn transform fully into soft scuffling on dirt and grass.

When things were relatively quiet, he slipped out of the corner, ducking out of the coarse material that somebody had set up to act as a curtain. He crawled to the area where the other students had been and found a collection of left behind items. There were backpacks carelessly thrown everywhere, along with some jackets and shoes. It also smelled a bit rancid, kind of like a locker room, actually.

Nam Il wrinkled his nose a bit as he searched for the ledger, opening up random books just to make sure that otherwise boring academic covers were hiding something less than legal within. Ledger, ledger, ledger, where is it? He hadn't really expected to find a big, fat book just obviously sitting out under a ray of light or anything but there was still the vague idea that he would have.

Now, if he had something like that, where would be the second place he'd think to hide it?

The boy thought for a few more moments, went to check, and then mentally smacked himself in the forehead.

Genevieve was a notoriously fast runner, but they stayed a decent pace behind the kids. They didn't have any intention of catching one in the first place. Just scaring them would be fine.

Crime was dirty, dirty work. Bad movies drilled into their heads that they were special enough to take down crime bosses with determination and the power of friendship, but Genevieve had been in the business far too long to know that those guys were usually the first to go. If they scare them off of this lifestyle, then that would be a huge bonus.

They passed by the thick forest near the high school, and that was when Genevieve took out their gun to begin shooting at them. Genevieve couldn't hurt innocents, but these babies seeing live bullets scuff trees? That would scare them real bad. Genevieve began shooting near them, but specifically aiming at the trees. Their frightened squealing was intense.

"Hey, noobs! What's the matter? You guys thought you could get away with dealing in another person's turf like that?"

Soft whimpering behind the trees, "We're sorry! We're sorry!"

"Hey, what's going on back there?"

Damn. That was campus security, wasn't it? Genevieve got rid of their gun and ducked away into the bushes. This time, they muffled their aura just enough so they wouldn't be spotted.

This large, green-skinned man in guard appeared. "Who's in there!?"

The kids meekly showed themselves, their faces flushed with fear and embarrassment.

"I heard gunshots. Did any of you use any weapons in here?"

"I-it was that guy! They were..."

Their companion quickly hushed him. The guard sighed, and began to round up the kids. "All right, all right, let's take you guys to the Admissions Office."

A few of them tried to search for Gen in the bushes, but they were already gone.

An Nam Il

Completely unaware of what Gen was doing in way of distraction, Nam Il pushed the rickety table away. He winced a little as things began to slide off the table but didn't let that stop him from taking the book which had, up until that point, been acting as a stabilizer for a leg that was an inch or so too short. It was kind of a weird place to put something that important but Nam Il still remembered those days when he used to tape envelopes of money to the underside of tables 'just in case.' Tables were awesome places to hide things, they really were. Also chairs.

He flipped through the book hurried, skimming the information on its pages. It certainly seemed like a legitimate ledger but he wondered briefly if he ought to search around a bit more just to be sure. After all, what if it wasn't real? What if it was just a red herring of some sort? But then again, these were only high school students and everybody knew high school students tended not to think things through that much.

What would Nancy Drew do? Now that was an example of a high school level detective. Nam Il really expected there to be some kind of catch just because of all of the books he had read but then again, he had the book with him right now. Maybe it really was that easy. In any case, he got out of there, ledger tucked under his arm.

Now was he supposed to hide behind the dumpster or in it? He was pretty sure he remember it was behind but. Hm. Maybe that was In Suk rubbing off of him. A few rounds of voluntary dumpster diving really were eye-openers.
