Name: “Mynaim.” Pronounced exactly like “My Name,” and frequently spelled that way. The pronunciation changes with the language it is using at the time, to match that language’s version of those words (eg. “Mi nombre es Minombre.”). You can also call it “You” or “It.”
Age: Somewhere around 4000 years old
Birthday: It gained form and consciousness gradually, over the course of several decades between 2100 and 1900 BCE.
Gender: Not an applicable concept.
Category: Civilian (technically an undocumented immigrant)

Appearance Description: MyNaim's physical form is an androgynous humanoid creature about five and a half feet tall. Its face has a shapely mouth, an adorable little nose, and a gaping wound in the shape of an X where its eyes should be. The wound never stops bleeding when it is uncovered, but it is usually covered with gauze or some kind of cloth bandage, which cover the entire upper half of its head, so only its nose and mouth are visible. This does not affect its ability to see; it can see just as well as, if not better than any human.

It has no hair anywhere on its body. Its skin is featureless pale, and unnaturally smooth. It has a long, prehensile green-black tongue which it uses frequently for a number of purposes. Its body is slim and slightly toned. It is covered in spiral-shaped scars.

Aside from the bandages, it wears patchy, ragged gray cloth with various trinkets embedded in the fabric such as bones, gems, interesting rocks, bits of wire or string, and pieces of glass. Typically, one strip of this material is wrapped around its flat chest, while another, larger piece falls from its hips like a long skirt.

Physiology: Although Mynaim can have a physical form sometimes, it is first and foremost an intangible spirit. It was created, accidentally, from the residual spiritual energies of dead or dying humans in a long-forgotten city state obliterated by some magical catastrophe. It is not made of their souls, though that is an easy mistake to make. As a spirit, Mynaim cannot be harmed by any sort of purely physical attack. Certain magical weapons or abilities, however, could easily injure or kill it, if someone wanted to go to all that trouble.

It does not need to eat, but it enjoys doing so. Its diet consists of insects, small pieces of glass, clumps of hair, fingernails, useful pieces of plastic (legos, dice, and ear-pieces especially), and tears. Tears are especially delicious.

Personality Description: My Name is an insatiably curious creature that enjoys confusing mortals. It first said that its name was ‘My Name’ because that answer confuses and frustrates mortals. Mynaim is mysterious in the extreme. It has difficulty relating to other sentient creatures, but it also has little interest in relating to them. In general, its psyche and emotional state don’t map very well to anything a human might have ever experienced.

Likes:
  • Useless trinkets
  • Confusing or angering mortals
  • Observing mortals’ behavior, especially in unusual situations that Mynaim itself has created
  • Learning new things, especially secret things
  • Licking tears off people’s faces; tears are delicious
  • Prime numbers
  • Poorly written erotica
Dislikes:
  • People trying to look at its soul. Eyes are supposed to be the windows to the soul, which is why it removed its eyes.
  • The color orange
  • ”Tedious” questions, such as 'what are you?' or 'are you a boy or a girl?'
  • People who disagree with its assertion that its physical form is attractive

Powers:
Physical Manifestation: Like most spirits, Mynaim is usually intangible, invisible, and only detectable by some kind of extrasensory perception. Spirits usually can’t affect the physical world without some sort of extraordinary effort or means. However, Mynaim is special; being a part of the physical world is an effortless task for it.

There are two ways that Mynaim can impact the world. First, it can act as a disembodied force, moving things around like a poultergeist. This allows it to remain in its natural, shapeless, largely undetectable spirit form while still interacting with the world. However, while in its spirit form, Mynaim only has a limited ability to perceive the physical world. It cannot perceive color, shapes are vague and blurry, and it can only see things when a sentient being is perceiving it or thinking about it in any way.

Mynaim can also manifest a full physical form, which is described above in the appearance section. Manifestation and un-manifestation each take about two seconds to achieve. Its physical form is subject to obnoxious limitations like “gravity” and “not being able to pass through physical objects.” However, having a foothold in the physical world allows it to perceive the world more clearly. Mynaim can be injured while in this form, but unless some form of magic is used, these injuries do not cause pain, and it can ‘heal’ itself by evaporating into its spirit form and re-appearing in its physical form.

Dreamwalking: While in spirit form, Mynaim can enter the dream of any nearby creature. It can observe the dream as an invisible spirit, or it can appear as a character in the dream, but only in a form similar to its physical form in the real world. Mynaim can also manipulate the emotional state of the dreamer whose dreams it occupies, and it can disappear and reappear within the dream world as it can in the real world. Otherwise, existing in a person’s dream gives Mynaim no special powers, and it can leave the dream at any time.

Biography: Mynaim’s childhood was fairly typical for an un-bound spirit. After stumbling into sentience and self-awareness, it spent a lot of time feeding on places of spiritual power, disinterestedly observing mortals, avoiding enslavement by mages, and avoiding consumption by bigger spirits until it became powerful enough that it didn’t have to worry about that.

Its first physical manifestation was three thousand years ago. It still had eyes back then. It didn’t understand why it had this ability, which set it apart so much from others of its kind. Perhaps it had something to do with the circumstances of its ‘birth,’ which Mynaim itself barely understood. Either way, it wasted little time in trying to befriend the humans, then, failing that, becoming a vaguely malicious trickster spirit instead.

It spent the next three thousand years getting its jollies by travelling all over the world, alternately messing with the humans or learning more about them. Only recently did it discover Manta Carlos, and the discovery excited it: so many secrets! So many unique mortals with unique powers who would react in unique ways to its shenanigans! Mynaim knew immediately that it would enjoy spending time here.
