The waves of the Pacific Ocean gently bashed along the side of the boat as it sailed into the Island's dock, towing in a handful of new students for Starlight Academy. Riley Lindermen sat patiently while the others bounced in anticipation, excited to finally arrive on the Manta Carlos Island. Once the boat came to a stop and everybody had departed, they began making their way eagerly towards the school, while Riley held back slightly behind.

Whilst everyone else was excited, Riley was still dazed and a little reserved, for he had only discovered that magical powers existed two years ago, and it wasn't until a week ago that he learnt that he wasn't the only one to have them.
He put his hands into his denim jean pockets and clutched the welcome letter which had been neatly folded and proceeded to follow the group ahead of him, still keeping a few yards distance behind them.

Riley hadn't said one word on the trip to the Island, besides murmuring his name and age when people asked. It wasn't unlike Riley to be quiet and shy, he lacked social skills back home too, but he mostly felt intimidated, especially as they bragged about their powers and their important familes.

He waited behind the queue of students as they each filled in the essential paperwork for joining the Academy. When it came to his turn, the lady behind the desk, a rather large lady at that, began printing off his paperwork and tried engaging him in light conversation. "So, Mr..", she subtly glanced at a piece of paper to remind herself of his name, "Lindermen.. Welcome to Starlight Academy! Here you've got a map of the school, showing where your dorm is, where the cafeteria is and all your class locations", she handed the paper to him, barely taking a breath before she waffled on, "here's your class schedule, and on the back is a list of times for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there are public phones in the lobby of your dorms and in your rooms, should you want to contact your parents at any time, free of charge of course." She handed him a few more pieces of paper before leaning back in her chair and smiling at him. "Any questions don't hesitate to ask." Riley nodded, making his way to the hallway, trying to work out the map and where he was.

He looked around as the hallway was bustling with movement, full of interesting people, this was a complete contrast to his high school back home, full of normal, non magical people that is. He tried to make his way to an empty spot by the window sill where he could put all his papers into his bag, dodging students as they walked in his direction, seemingly not noticing at all that he was there. He almost made it when somebody bashed into him sending the papers flying and Riley to his knees, he looked up, his face turning slightly red. The boy just looked down at him and laughed as he continued walking, making a comment about Riley that appeared to be funny amongst his peers.

Riley scrambled together his papers and stuffed them into his bag and paced off into the opposite direction, keeping his head down.

Pham Thi Anh Sang

Happiness was a bag of candy, really brightly colored sugary candy that Anh Sang couldn't help but keep putting in her mouth. People always said that if she ate too many sweets she would get cavities but Anh Sang was starting to think that maybe that was a lie because she was sure that she had eaten a mountain of sweets in her short lifetime already and the dentist always said that her teeth were perfect.

And it wasn't like she ate like this all the time. Just once a month. Or twice a month. Once a week, maybe. She especially liked gummy candies covered with sugar crystals and she could buy them by the pound for cheap as dirt. Her mommy and daddy weren't too happy about her eating so many but they always let her go with a sigh. It might have had something to do with the fact that they were still back in Vietnam.

Actually, though, her body was starting to feel a bit tingly from the sugar. The sugar rush was a bit more obvious in her powers. That cloud of white light butterflies she kept around her were fluttering restlessly around her, sometimes bumping into objects or other people. Since they were just soft light, it probably didn't feel like too much but it was unlikely that they'd get back to their typical order any time soon. Anh Sang was just feeling too upbeat for her magic to not act with her emotions. Besides, it was kind of funny watching how the butterflies faltered whenever they hit something, like they were a bit dazed by the impact. She found it a bit weird that they couldn't just avoid things altogether but then again, they weren't alive either so maybe they just couldn't think of it.

For a while, she walked down the hallway, happily munching away from a slowly diminishing bag of sweets. People had mostly gotten used to seeing her around with her butterflies -it was kind of obvious, after all- so she didn't really bump into many of them. And people who she did bump into, they had learned to keep on walking. It was just less awkward that way!
