Addy was making grumbling and panicky sounds.
"Hey," Lochlann said, and he put took one of her hands from her face and squeezed it, bringing it down to rest on her leg.
"It's okay, he's your brother, he's important to you," he said. And Lochlann managed to sound calm, but it was difficult for him to realize if he was trying to reassure Addy...or trying to reassure himself.
He was starting to get optimistic about the idea of Alaude leaving when FUCKING ALAUDE came back in and plopped on the couch nearer to Lochlann. Lochlann took a slow, deep breath in through his nose. Okay.
He exhaled, and when he did, Lochlann was smiling. He was still holding Addy's hand. He would not deny himself this, would not shy away from Addy, just because FUCKING ALAUDE decided that he needed to be part of this.
Be kind, he heard his sister's voice in his head. Maybe Alaude is just aggressive because he's new at the island and he's uncomfortable and he has no friends. Remember what it was like for you when you first got here?
Fuck you, he told his inner voice. I'm not Alaude.
Fucking Alaude.
Continue? How could he continue?
"I can take you there, sometime," Lochlann told Addy instead. "I can show you the place where that story ended."
He did visit Dani's grave sometimes. It was a novelty to him, having a place where he was actually allowed to feel sad. Honestly, it was probably one of the healthiest things he had done. He had the opportunity to mourn not only Dani, but everyone else that'd he'd fucked over.
"It'd be a nice place to go alone," he said.
To his credit, he didn't glance at Alaude when he said it.
"So! You must have been on a lot of adventures while you were gone," Lochlann said. "Tell me about one."
