Addy was making grumbling and panicky sounds.

"Hey," Lochlann said, and he put took one of her hands from her face and squeezed it, bringing it down to rest on her leg.

"It's okay, he's your brother, he's important to you," he said. And Lochlann managed to sound calm, but it was difficult for him to realize if he was trying to reassure Addy...or trying to reassure himself.

He was starting to get optimistic about the idea of Alaude leaving when FUCKING ALAUDE came back in and plopped on the couch nearer to Lochlann. Lochlann took a slow, deep breath in through his nose. Okay.

He exhaled, and when he did, Lochlann was smiling. He was still holding Addy's hand. He would not deny himself this, would not shy away from Addy, just because FUCKING ALAUDE decided that he needed to be part of this.

Be kind, he heard his sister's voice in his head. Maybe Alaude is just aggressive because he's new at the island and he's uncomfortable and he has no friends. Remember what it was like for you when you first got here?

Fuck you, he told his inner voice. I'm not Alaude.

Fucking Alaude.

Continue? How could he continue?

"I can take you there, sometime," Lochlann told Addy instead. "I can show you the place where that story ended."

He did visit Dani's grave sometimes. It was a novelty to him, having a place where he was actually allowed to feel sad. Honestly, it was probably one of the healthiest things he had done. He had the opportunity to mourn not only Dani, but everyone else that'd he'd fucked over.

"It'd be a nice place to go alone," he said.

To his credit, he didn't glance at Alaude when he said it.

"So! You must have been on a lot of adventures while you were gone," Lochlann said. "Tell me about one."

Maybe one would expect after this that Alaude was going to squeeze himself even more into this thing between Addy and Lochlann, but he didn't. Instead he stayed quiet, save for the crunching sounds of junk food between his teeth. He was there to make sure nothing he'd hate would happen between the two, but he knew what Addy felt about this... this... everything-- and she understood his reasons just as much, and they both had their lines when it came to interfering with one another that they can touch but never cross.

In other words, Alaude respected that Addy and Lochlann had a thing, even though he despised the guy. And Addy knew Alaude was only making his presence felt because he was anxious, and he was overprotective of her for valid reasons.

Although it was still embarrassing, on Addy's side at least.

When Lochlann continued to speak, Addy turned her eyes towards him and offered a small smile and a nod. She wasn't sure what he meant by 'the place where it ended' but endings were always sad and tragic, and she figured Lochlann's heart could be breaking. Right now. Maybe Alaude's presence was the only thing keeping this from becoming a scene full of tears again.

Alaude actually knew they were talking seriously.

When Lochlann turned the conversation around to focus on Adelene, she looked at her brother, who was also looking at her. She bit her lower lip thoughtfully and one second later decided to grab one bag of chips that Alaude was kind enough to bring to them.

It was inflated, and she hugged it like a pillow as she thought of what she could tell Lochlann. There wasn't much to say.

"Well, I already told you that I met my father, right? He's blond and has green eyes, did I mention that before?" She realized that everything she was about to say next was so positive that she didn't know if that was a good thing or if it was something disrespectful to Lochlann's pain. The thought made her hesitate. She frowned and shrunk a little, as if she was trying to hide behind that inflated bag of chips in her arms. "I've made friends back home. Not exactly friends but... coworkers who I got along with really well. They work under my father, too, uh... they're Alaude's team. We took jobs where the government asked for assistance, and we worked with actual military personnel and all that. Assassinations, infiltrations, intelligence gathering." She chuckled. "There's not much to say."

She wasn't going to boast about how fun it was. How nice Alaude's team treated her. How she was everyone's little sister, even though at the same time nobody forgot who and what she was and didn't give her special treatment.

The only story she had closest to pain was the explanation to why all her stories lacked the presence of her biological mother, from whom she and her brother had inherited their hair and eye colors and their powers, but she wasn't going to talk about that, at least not while Alaude was around.

Oh god fucking damn, Alaude chewed so fucking loudly.

Lochlann was sensitive to sound. Above the water like this, nothing was muffled like it should be. Lochlann was pretty sure Alaude would still be chewing loudly under the water. His whole presence was loud somehow.

The bitter irony of the situation was that Alaude had distracted Lochlann from his own discomfort at what he might have felt talking to Addy about all the people he'd killed. Lochlann wasn't feeling sad. He was...irritated.

And Lochlann could handle irritation a lot better than he could handle regret.

"You didn't tell me that!" Lochlann said in surprise to her comment about her father's appearance. He tried to piece the two together, and Lochlann considered this. He tilted his head and studied Addy's features, trying to wonder which part of her came from where. "I honestly can't picture what he'd look like."

When she talked about her job, Lochlann's face lit up with undisguised interest. This was one of the rare, genuine things about Lochlann: he loved hearing about the things that made the people in his life who they were. And hearing Addy talk about her job and how she'd made friends there made Lochlann....happy.

He was thrilled for her.

"It must have been hard to come back here then," he said, but he laughed when she said 'there's not much to say.'

"Yeah, okay, suuureee," he teased. "Or is it that if you tell me, you'll have to kill me?"

This was easy. These were the conversations friends have. It reminded Lochlann of all the time they'd spent on the roof of that bookstore.

Alaude's presence still fucking drove him insane, as did the chewing, so Lochlann risked a question that would hopefully make him stop chewing long enough for the popping sounds in Lochlann's ears to stop.

"Why did you come here, then, Alaude?" he asked.

There wasn't anything exactly snarky in his tone. It was a genuine question, but Lochlann's voice stayed carefully neutral.

He stretched back on the couch for a moment, his back cracking, and Lochlann slid the arm closest to Addy behind her and rested his hand on her opposing hip.

it wasn't intended to be juxtaposed with his question. It wasn't intended to be a challenge.

Lochlann hadn't even really thought about what he was doing.

He really meant, Why did you come here to the island and not why did you come here in this room you British fuck.

But it would be very easy to think Lochlann was issuing another challenge to Alaude, especially with the loose, too-casual way his hand rested on Addy's hip. It really wasnt intended to be goading him onward.

Honest.

Lochlann just couldn't stop himself from touching her.

Just like he couldn't stop himself from thinking about how satisfying it had been to hit Alaude at the bar.

The mood inside the room felt a lot lighter all of a sudden. While she couldn't erase her guilt inside her, Addy felt relieved that Lochlann seemed to have liked what she told him. They were talking like friends, the way friends talk to one another, again.

"There's really not much!" she argued, though he was right that she also had a piece or two classified info she couldn't divulge.

Alaude closed his eyes as he tried to reason with himself why he shouldn't kick Lochlann in the face now. Hearing him talk like an idiot around Addy irritated him more than ever, and he really needed a legitimate reason to lash out.

It came. Lochlann actually had the guts to talk to him, and if that wasn't enough, his arm... holy shit his arm. Alaude's eyes momentarily widened. He leaned forward towards the damn brat, irritation-- or was it already anger?— making the red hue of his eyes much brighter.

"What the bloody fuck do you think you're doing, you shithead?? Get away from my sister or you're dead." Alaude stood up, and in a few seconds was about to lunge forward and grab Lochlann and punch him to death. That was, if Adelene hadn't stood up as well and immediately came between them.

"No fighting," she said.

Fucking Alaude.

Lochlann was honestly surprised when Alaude jumped up from the seat and Lochlann's mind flared to life. Okay, Alaude was going to kick his ass and Lochlann knew from the first fight the only reason he even stood a chance was because he caught Alaude off guard.

Lochlann might be faster, but Alaude was stronger, and he had training.

Lochlann had a set of poor decision making skills.

Animals tended to respond in three different ways: fight, flight, or freeze.

Lochlann knew he couldn't fight. His eyes went to the window and--

No. That would be too easy. Lochlann was going to fight. He was going to fucking go for it. He was going to jump backwards over this couch and then come around the side and then--

no fighting, Adelene said.

And Lochlann froze.

But it wasn't fear paralyzing him. It was.. what the fuck was this feeling? Why was he so fucking pissed at her god damn smug-ass brother?

"Who the fuck do you think you are?" Lochlann asked him. But he didn't get up. He listened to Addy.

The effort it took Lochlann to remain calm was astronomical. His entire body was tensed and rigid, like a lion waiting to pounce. He took a deep breath.

Do.
Not.
Fight.
Addy's.
Brother.

The whisky glass shattered in his hand.

Addy told them not to fight, but Alaude kept glaring at Lochlann as if he hadn't heard her; his body kept being tense, his hands balled to gifts, as if he was ready to throw himself at Lochlann anytime.

"Who the fuck do you think you are?" Lochlann had said, and then the glass he was holding broke.

Alaude's eyes widened even more; his veins bulged all over his neck. "You fucker have the GUTS TO ASK?!"

One moment later, he was already on Lochlann on the couch, grabbing Lochlann's collar and landing a punch on his face. Adelene had tried to keep him away, but Alaude had easily pushed her to the side. She could no longer do anything after Alaude got to where he needed to beat Lochlann up. Alaude didn't even care that there were shards of glass around them.

He tried to land another punch, on Lochlann's gut this time.

"I HATE YOU SO MUCH YOU SHIT!"

Lochlann regretted that he didn't spring up from the couch when he wanted to now that Alaude was pummeling him.

His first thought was ow dude, why do you always go for the fucking face?

He'd felt a crack when Alaude hit him and Lochlann knew this was going to sting, throb, and swell like a motherfucker once Alaude was done with him. His heart hammered against his rib cage and when Alaude pulled his fist back to land a blow on his gut, Lochlann didn't have time to think.

If he did have time to think, he'd remember that Addy told them not to fight.

He did kind of remember that, but he rather thought the circumstances had changed given that Alaude dealt the first blow.

If he did think, he would remember that just sitting here and not fighting might be enough to have Addy, who was literally trained in doing this, ream her brother a new asshole.

Lochlann did not think of this because he just reacted.

With Alaude holding him by the shirt collar, Lochlann couldn't get his arms at a good enough angle to land a decent blow. But he could swing his leg out and sweep it towards Alaude's legs, hoping to at least dislodge him enough that Lochlann could get up.

"Yeah fuck you," Lochlann said, spitting blood at Alaude's face.

It wasn't the best comment but it was all he had at this moment.

Lochlann's palm stung. He was still holding a few shards of glass which were cutting into him. He debated about it, wondering if he should use whatever advantage he had.

He goaded Alaude onward.

"At least I have the guts to look at myself in the mirror each day," Lochlann said. "You're probably afraid of seeing an ass, which is exactly what your face looks like."

It was stupid, the kind of stuff Lochlann said to his brother when he fought him. But Lawrence was one of the few people who beat Lochlann as bad as he suspected Alaude was going to.

Lochlann knew he couldn't land a good hit right now, not with his fists, so he hooked his free hand around Alaude's back into Alaude's pants and...pulled his underwear up as hard and fast as he could.

Alaude was probably used to fighting skilled opponents.

Lochlann's best tactic was to hope to catch him off guard.

And what's more unexpected than a wedgie?

Alaude stumbled backwards when Lochlann swung his legs. With his balance messed up like that it wasn't too easy to maneuver into a better position, but he managed to catch his weight against the table before getting back up.

He cringed in disgust as he wiped Lochlann's spit from off his face. With every word that came out of the little shit's foul mouth, Alaude's temper worsened, and it felt so fulfilling to punch him on the face a second time.

"You speak like a little brat, is that all you've got?"

Apparently not. Alaude breath got caught in the feeling of sudden sharp pain between his thighs and ass and the sudden tightness on his crotch. He caught Lochlann's hand fast enough to save himself from further pain, and pulled him out of the couch and threw him to the floor past the table.

Alaude's face was beet red as he took this moment to fix the ruined fabric underneath his pants.

Addy had covered her face as she watched in the corner, angry, but couldn't help laughing at what just happened. Neither of the siblings had seen someone fight like Lochlann, and what he'd done baffled them both. So Addy didn't know if she was laughing because of the sloppy fighting, or because Alaude was obviously embarrassed out of his wits.

It was enough to provoke the older brother to lunge at Lochlann again, growling, feeling defeated for the moment, and wanting some payback. Addy managed to snap herself out and stepped forward for another attempt to stop them. She also had to grab the bottle of whiskey quickly to keep it from getting caught in the fight.

"Hey don't destroy our things at least!" she shouted at them. Alaude pushed her away again even before she could get close.

The older brother wasn't listening when he pulled Lochlann to lay on his stomach and then pulled both his arms to a painfully extreme position at the back.

In retrospect, Lochlann shouldn't be happy about pissing off Alaude so much with his maneuver, but it did what it was supposed to do and Lochlann was able to jerk back when Alaude pushed him off, creating some distance between them.

He briefly heard Addy laughing and couldn't speculate what that meant because Alaude had pulled the underwear out of his ass and quickly came at Lochlann and-—

"Oh fuck," Lochlann muttered, knowing full well that if he thought he was fucked before, he was really in for it now.

Alaude had Lochlann down and was pulling his arms back in a position so painful that Lochlann saw spots on the edge of his eyes. At the angle he was bent, he couldn't get his legs in for a blow, and with his arms the way they were...

Lochlann gave a low, frustrated growl. He writhed, he squirmed, he moved desperately like a caught animal. His breath came in short bursts and blood trickled down his face.

Lochlann licked his lips.

With Alaude positioned as he was, there was...one thing Lochlann could still do. He had him fucked as a human but as a monster...

Lochlann arched his neck and grabbed the chain from his amulet in his mouth.

He could pull it off and the change would come fast and Alaude would be on his back and they'd go out the window and Lochlann would see just how strong this fucker was when his lungs were full of water and--

--and the taste of Addy's blood in his mouth.

Lochlann froze. He closed his eyes.

He said, "You're lucky I love your sister so much or you'd be fucked right now, Alaude. Fucked so hard. So fucked that if you lived you wouldn't be able to sit without moaning my name."

Lochlann was oblivious to the potential innuendo in his statement. He'd been picturing moans of pain.

Lochlann spat the chain for his amulet out of his mouth and let Alaude do to him what he would.

He was too focused on the pain to realize what else he'd let slip.

Lochlann had said he loved Addy. Alaude immediately took that as the kind of love he sensed between them, the kind of love he was so pissed of them having because it was frustrating and it was scary and Alaude was worried for Addy so much that the thoughts of her possibly crying made his grip on Lochlann loose.

The little shit stopped wriggling. Alaude let go. But he was eyeing Lochlann with so much disgust after what he had said. "In your dreams you little shit. Disgusting. Your name's too much of a garbage to even touch my mouth."

He was thinking of returning more spiteful words, but he had already calmed down, the thought of his sister had calmed him down, and he was no longer furious enough to let careless angry words slip. He did say something when he stood up, "You're lucky my sister loves you."

Adelene froze in her spot. The two spoke of her so easily and feelings have been laid out in the open and... she was scared of how Alaude saw right through that.

"If you weren't her friend you'd be dead by now." Alaude's words cut through Addy's thoughts and snapped her out. She was relieved he used the word 'friend'. "I'm done," he told her. "It sucks fighting with an idiot." When he's created some distance, Adelene hurried to Lochlann and helped him up. Alaude went back to his room to change his ruined underwear.

"Hey, let's treat those wounds," Addy told Lochlann while looking at his hands. The glass shards were what worried her the most about the fight. Strangely, she wasn't as angry as the last time this happened, back in Lochlann's workplace-- mostly because she had already expected it to happen knowing they hated each other.

"Thanks for not hurting my brother, by the way."

She was talking about what she saw, him biting his amulet and trying to do something with it, but instead stopping to move and letting Alaude twist his arms. While she was unfamiliar with that necklace, she got the idea from Lochlann's words that it would've been easy to kill or hurt if he wasn't human. But he decided to stay human. She smiled, and gave Lochlann a kiss on the cheek.

"Let me treat your wounds, Loch. I'll get the first aid kit."
