"I'm sure it will be fine," Kaz said.

He had the urge to reach out and grab Luke's hand, to give it a reassuring squeeze.

Kaz did not listen to that urge.

Instead, his fingers brushed against the other boy's for a moment before landing on the wooden door to the ballroom. He pushed it open and there it was.

The ballroom was transformed from the grand, empty hall that Kaz would cut through on his way to class to something out of the best fairy tales. The ceilings were high and decorated with candles. Pumpkins, apples, and fall leaves decorated the interior. Everyone wore masks and were dancing to the music, which would change from a literal waltz to something fast and modern. There was an orchestra and a dj and the transition between the songs should have been jarring, but it wasn't. It was a seamless blend of all of these eras.

"Well," Kaz said, and then he cast a glance at Luke and smirked. "How are your dancing skills?"

Kaz's were not great.

Not to....was that dubstep?

Luke nodded at Kaz's reassurance. "What's the worst that could happen..right?" He asked himself, although his trepidation began to increase as the doors drew nearer. Although upon feeling Kaz's hand brush his, Luke jumped slightly blushed furiously. He attempted to play it off as if he had just been startled by the sound of the doors opening, although he doubted that his charade was very convincing.

Upon entering the ballroom, Luke was stunned. He had to consciously tell his mouth to close itself, the decorations and music left him awestruck. Luke tried forcing his legs to move forward, although he found that he couldn't even manage a muscle spasm.

Luke finally came back to reality when he realized Kaz had asked him about dancing. "D-dancing? I..well..depends on the music.." He said quietly and stared at the floor. Luke severely doubted his ability to "gyrate" to electronic music, but, there's a first for everything. Luke stole a glance at Kaz before he looked back at the floor.

There were so many people here, he wasn't sure what to do with himself. He fidgeted in place before gesturing vaguely at the room. "W-well, after you.." He said quietly, desperately hoping Kaz would take the lead, which would give him enough time to control his creeping sense of dread. Crowds were not his thing.

Kaz looked around the room for another moment, then looked over his shoulder at Luke.

"Okay, come on then," he said. He started to move forward but realized the crowd of people would make it both difficult for him to keep track of Luke and, quite possibly, be a little bit distressing for his companion.

Kaz himself wasn't particularly fond of the large crowds, but there was something about the night that made Kaz feel adventurous.

He turned around and grabbed Luke's hand. His fingers squeezed the other boy's gently and Kaz pulled him onto the dance floor right as it switched to a waltz.

They could walk across it, sure, but Kaz was suddenly feeling awkward standing there as other people began to move in the four-four timing of the music so Kaz spun around and blurted out, "IS IT OKAY IF I LEAD?"

Luke blushed once again as Kaz's hand closed around his. Although his warm feeling soon disappeared as he was lead onto the dance floor. The tempo of the music changed, and Luke sighed in silent thanks. While he wasn't a master at dancing, this he could at least manage and not embarrass himself.

Luke's body began to sway slightly to the music, although he quickly killed that impulse. He finally tuned back in to Kaz holding his hand, and the warm feeling returned once again. Luke was fairly certain if he blushed any harder, he'd die from a lack of blood circulation to his heart.

At Kaz's request of leading, Luke quickly nodded his head. "Go ahead! I barely know what I'm doing!" Luke said, and laughed softly, a rare occasion. He tightened his grip on Kaz's hand and waited for the dance to begin.

“Okay, I barely know what I’m doing, either,” Kaz admitted and gave a breathless laugh. His whole chest felt suddenly tight as he looked into Luke’s eyes, slid his hand onto the other boy’s body, and loosened his grip on the hand he held in case they fell while dancing which is why they did not interlock fingers oh my god never do that .

It took Kaz a second to figure out the tempo of the music but once he did, he led Luke in a slow, perhaps even intimate waltz. When he moved, he could feel his body brushing against the other boy’s and Kaz wondered why his face felt hot. It must be because it was Samhain, he told himself, and he was just feeling the lingering effects of whatever magic floated through the air.

Lukes face looked a little bit red, too, Kaz noticed. It must be something in the air. Maybe it was too hot in here. Maybe it wasn't just him.

At one point, Kaz stumbled a little bit and his face was suddenly, painfully, remarkably close to Luke’s.

Kaz’s heart was thumping.

Could he do this?

Kaz decided to go for it.

He tilted his head to the side.

He leaned his closer. His lips grazed the other boy’s skin as he brought his mouth close to his ear.

He whispered, “I’ve never danced with another guy before. This is a lot easier since you’re not wearing heels.”

Luke wasn't sure what it was about Kaz's whispering, but something in him gave way. His thoughts and worries went out the window and all he could focus on was every word Kaz said to him in that hushed tone, along with the feeling on their bodies brushing against one another. Luke giggled at Kaz's appreciation of his choice in footwear. It was strange, Luke couldn't even remember the last time he had giggled, much less laughed.

Almost as if possessed by some other force, Luke relaxed and moved closer to Kaz, almost as if he was trying to increase the amount of attention he was getting. His emotions were going haywire. He could barely understand them, confusion, joy, infatuation? No, not the third. Certainly not. They were just friends? Right?

Luke ended up confusing himself and getting lost in his head for a moment. When he finally pulled himself out, he timidly looked at Kaz before he mumbled almost too quietly to hear. "This..this is nice.." His voice was nearly drowned out by the sounds of the dance floor, even though he was once again blushing at how haltingly the sentence had come out.

Kaz could not imagine himself dancing with another man back in Poland. While his family had been tolerant about the idea of gay couples, he could not imagine their reaction if he decided to go to a semi-formal dance with a boy.

Of course, he hadn't imagined their expressions at discovering what he was, either. No, that was real and played out across his mind any single time he thought about calling them.

Kaz was a monster and he wasn't welcome at home.

But here, he felt welcome in Luke's arms. Here, it didn't matter that he was dancing with a boy. More importantly to Kaz, it hardly even mattered that he was fae. They were just all playing pretend.

"This is nice," Kaz said.

He could not lie. This was not a lie. This was nice. This was...

If Kaz was honest with himself this was more than nice. This felt illicit. THe room felt hot and Kaz felt a little bit dizzy. He moved from one song right into the other, the beat a little bit faster to this one, less of a waltz and more of a....

Kaz wasn't sure. All he knew was that the movements were seamless and he transitioned into the next dance easily. Luke was a good partner. Kaz rather thought Luke's shyness worked to the other boy's advantage. After all, he wasn't competing with Kaz or trying to out-show him or anything else the women he'd danced with inevitably tried to do.

All Kaz knew was that it was very hot in here. His glamour kept fading in and out. He'd look human one minute, then sharp toothed and dark eyed the next, something beautiful and monstrous.

He said, "Do you want to get a drink?"

Luke was in a daze as the music flowed through the room. The many bodies dancing in unison at times further hypnotized him. However he was utterly captivated by the Kaz, he moved effortlessly, almost as if he immediately knew what to do at any given moment. Luke bit his lip in concentration as his mind took over again, bombarding him with its petty jabs and comments. Finally, Luke broke free of his thoughts. "Feel, don't think." He said to himself as he continued dancing.

"Y-yeah, this is nice.." He murmured, nearly drowned out by the music and sounds of others dancing. He glanced at Kaz, and then blinked as he swore his appearance changed for a moment. Although Luke played it off on his mind messing with him due to the odd amount of physical exertion he was participating in.

Luke's expression changed to one of concern as Kaz seemed to heat up in his hands. "A-are you okay?" He asked quietly, unsure as to if it was considered rude to pry into someone's feelings. Even though his Empathy usually did that whether he wanted to or not.

Luke then nodded his head in approval of getting a drink when Kaz had posed the question. Dancing wasn't exactly easy, especially for someone like Luke who often stayed secluded in his room when he wasn't scurrying to class.

He had the strange urge to reach out and take Kaz's hand, just a gesture of friendship to make sure he wouldn't pass out or anything given how warm he was. However Luke stopped himself before he did anything that might upset the other boy. He settled for standing near Kaz to make sure that nothing too dangerous befell his newfound..friend? Acquaintance? Dance Partner?

Luke's thoughts were about as mixed as his feelings about the colors yellow and neon orange.

Was he okay?

Fuck.

Kaz didn't know.

All he knew was that he was overcome with a sense of conflicting feelings. On one hand, dancing with Luke felt good. Too good. The fact that it was good felt like a problem.

Because it shouldn't feel good, should it?

Was Kaz okay?

He didn't know.

"Must have just got worked up dancing," he decided to tell the other boy.

It wasn't a lie.

He gave Luke's hand a squeeze and now Kaz realized he was reluctant to drop it. Why the hell was that? Was there something in the air for samhain? His glamour flickered again, switching him from beautiful & monstrous back to ordinary.

"Thank you for coming with me," Kaz said. He was suddenly shy, at a loss for words.

There was a rule of sorts amongst fae that you shouldn't give thanks because if you did, it implied that you owed the other person. Kaz hoped with all his hear that Luke wanted something from him.

But why?

Future target, he reminded himself. That's all that these feelings were. For a future target.

Luke nodded at the Kaz's reason. Dancing was a strenuous activity, and Luke himself was feeling oddly fatigued after exerting his mind and body in such a way. As Luke felt Kaz take his hand and squeeze it, he blushed furiously. Several traitorous thoughts ran through his mind which he desperately tried to squash.

"He's a friend, stop that! You shouldn't even be thinking about it!" Luke ranted to himself within the confines of his mind. He shook his head as if to clear the thoughts, however it was then he heard Kaz thank him.

Luke paused for a moment before his neurons all fired at once. "Me?!" He mentally screamed. His face was once again a brilliant shade of scarlet as he tried to find the word. "N-no problem...Really..tonight was f-fun!" He said bashfully, silently cursing his social ineptitude and inability to control his speech patterns when put on the spot.

Luke tried to rationalize what Kaz had just said. People didn't tell him thank you, hell most didn't even say hello, much less notice his presence. Leucos felt an odd need to tell himself not to get his hopes up as Kaz probably just said something in the heat of the moment while feeling unwell.

Yet there was another part of him that desperately wanted every word to be true.
