Kaz weighed what he wanted to tell Luke about Samhain. On one end, he could say he read about it in a book, which would be true, but it would also be close to a lie because much of the information Kaz had came from what he was and his family.

"With the normies, Samhain is big in Pagan communities," he said. "Wicca, Druidism, a lot of the re-constructionists," he said. "But with the..."

He tried to find a word for what they were.

Luke wasn't fae like Kaz was, or, at least, Kaz didn't think he was fae. But then again, Kaz's own powers were so weak that it would be difficult for him to tell another fae from a stick bug.

"The...gifted, I guess, there are still some that have kept celebrating it," Kaz said. He led Luke out of the dorm and down the pathway, which was lighted with carved pumpkins from the students. There were a few leaves that flitted across the path and the air was comfortably chill.

"What was the most shocking thing for you to find here at the island?" Kaz asked suddenly. He gave look a somewhat mischievous grin, which was out of character for Kaz's normally serious face.

Luke nodded as it somewhat made sense. He wasn't exactly a bastion of conventional religion, although new information is always good. Partly why he spent most of his free time in the library.

He shivered slightly. He grimly realized that in his haste to get out the front door, he had left his signature jacket on his bed. Luke mentally grit his teeth and decided to tough out the cold. It wasn't as cold as his home country, although he still didn't enjoy lower temperatures in general. Lack of heat aside, Luke was still enjoying the scenery.

The students did a nice job with the pumpkin carving, and the leaves fluttering about in the wind made the scene even more surreal.

Luke tilted his head as he considered Kaz's question. "Well, I bumped into a..Demon? I think? She was nice though.. I was having a rough time getting settled..My powers decided to flare up..and yeah.." Luke trailed off awkwardly as he fidgeted with the bracelet around his wrist. He silently thanked her for getting him the bracelet.

Out of curiosity, Luke turned back to Kaz and in a rare display of bravery asked, "What's the strangest thing you've seen?"

Normally, Luke's short shiver would have been something Kaz wouldn't even notice. As it was, Kaz was hyper focused on pretending he wasn't noticing Luke, so of course he noticed, which meant that Kaz shrugged his jacket off and passed it over to the other boy without thinking about it.

"Here," he said, and he couldn't quite make eye contact. Instead, he looked in the opposite direction, pretending to be hyper focused on trying to figure out what image was carved on a misshapen pumpkin. Was that supposed to be a cat?

As for the weirdest thing he'd ever seen, Kaz exhaled and thought about it, then he laughed.

"The strangest thing I ever saw wasn't even on this island," Kaz confessed. "I saw a..."

He hesitated and searched for words to describe it.

"How familiar are you with rock operas?" he asked. Then, as an afterthought, he asked, "Was it shapeshifting or something? Your powers I mean?"

Luke was fairly certain he was blushing all different shades of red. His emotions were going haywire as he accepted the jacket and put it on. "Thank you.." He mumbled, too embarrassed to speak any louder. His heart was beating a mile a minute, and nothing he thought of could seem to calm him down. Luke occupied himself with staring intently at the cracks in the sidewalk, desperately trying to ignore the fact he was wearing someone else's jacket. An attractive someone at that.

"It's not like he likes you or anything. He's probably just doing the nice thing. You're not even good enough." Luke's subconscious grabbed onto the only rational explaination it could come up with for such a thing, and as it made more and more sense, Luke slowly calmed down enough to realize he was being spoken to. At the mention of rock opera, Luke's head tilted and his brows furrowed as he was thoroughly confused. "Rock..opera...? Do those two things even..go together..?" He said, although it was more of a question than a statement.

Upon being asked about the nature of his powers, a cold knot of dread formed in his stomach. Although Luke wasn't sure why. He had his bracelet on, his powers were safely tucked away where they couldn't get out of control. "I-..I can sense emotions..but.." He said quietly, almost whispering, although he choked on his words. "I can't control it.." He said, his voice cracked slightly with emotion, although he tried his best to shove his fear and trepidation down into the depths of his soul.

"Well, someone would make the argument that because rock and opera are so at odds, it's exactly why they go so well together, like bacon and chocolate," Kaz started, though he wrinkled his nose in a rare display of distaste. Kaz was not particularly fond of chocolate and bacon.

When the other boy mentioned his powers, choking at the words, Kaz felt a strange surge of...

What the hell was this?

It was almost like he wanted to reach out and comfort him, to protect the other boy in some way. After all, didn't Kaz know what it was like to be subject to something he couldn't control?

He pushed that thought away and said, simply, "I'm sorry. That must be difficult."

He wondered if he should drop the subject but he couldn't.

So he asked, "Does it....get overwhelming sometimes?"

ooc: No worries! We've both been busy, it's all good!

"Chocolate..bacon? Just why?" Luke thought to himself he became slowly grossed out by the idea. "S-some things just don't go together..you know?" He said timidly as he adjusted the jacket while walking. Luke simply nodded and cast his eyes downward at the mention of difficult. There was a slight pause, and Luke could tell something was on Kaz's mind. He was about to ask what when Kaz asked him if he was overwhelmed at times.

Luke suddenly shivered despite being warmer now thanks to the jacket. "I can't block them out sometimes..I-..I can't handle all of the emotions.." He said, his voice barely a whisper. The splitting headaches and blackouts caused by being too close to large groups of people rushed back into his memory. Just getting on the plane to Manta Carlos had been a hassle due to the many people in the airport.

He wrapped his arms around his stomach and started at the ground as he walked. The memories continued their relentless assault, his feelings of weakness, helplessness and uselessness all came rushing back in one terrible moment. Luke finally managed to push his feelings back, he then shook his head as if to banish them forever. "I-..I can cope with them better now." It hurt him to lie, but he wasn't ready to face the truth. He couldn't face the truth. Not yet.

Ah, here it was.

That sweet, sweet misery. Kaz was learning not to feel bad about it. After all, it's not like he was making the other boy feel miserable. It was Luke's powers that were doing that for him. And Kaz could always use the misery, could always use another grasp at that sweet inner torment that kept Kaz alive for another day.

He didn't need his curse to tell him that Luke didn't enjoy his powers anymore than Kaz did. Kaz reached out and, without thinking about it, put an arm around the other boy's shoulders, drawing his body close to his own side for just a moment.

It was a casual gesture, one that Kaz didn't even realize he'd done until it was over and he'd dropped his arm back to the side.

"Well, how's this," Kaz said, glancing up at the towers of the school and then giving Luke a grin. "If something happens and your powers are overwhelming, why don't we come up with some kind of secret word and I'll come get you and take you out?"

Luke blushed furiously at being so close to another person. He'd never been held in such a way, it was an odd feeling he thought. Although it was nice, his body relaxed ever so slightly and he let out an almost imperceptible sigh of content. However he was instantly on guard once Kaz suggested they have a signal of sorts so that Kaz could help him in the event his powers went haywire.

Luke looked at Kaz wide eyed. "Y-You'd do something like that..for me?" He stammered, he shook slightly, although quickly steadied himself. Luke just couldn't understand why someone would go out of their way to do something so nice for him. Especially someone he'd met by quite literally being in their way.

His thoughts raced as he searched frantically for an answer. Eventually, Luke settled for pulling out his phone and, with shaky hands, he looked at Kaz, for once his eyes weren't downcast at the floor. He resisted the need to squint, as they passed some particularly bright Jack 'o lanterns. He absentmindedly thought the light would make his eyes seem even freakier, but he quickly preoccupied himself by talking to Kaz.

"W-well..I could give you my phone number..if that's alright." He said, rushing through the sentence and stumbling over his words. He stared at the ground once again, embarrassed at how badly he'd butchered his words.

"Yeah, sure," Kaz said. He seemed to miss the other boy's surprise, or, rather he wasn't entirely sure what to do about it. Kaz knew he had a reputation for being a bit of a study-bug more focused on his academics more than other people...but did he really present that way?

It was probably a good thing.

"I mean, it's not like this is the old country and I'd be luring you outside to eat you for not leaving out an appropriate sacrifice for the elves," Kaz teased. It was well-meaning, a joke, heightened by the fact that Kaz couldn't entirely lie.

But in the glow of the jack-o-lanterns and with his glamour flicking, he might not have realized the timing of his sharped-tooth smile, his blackened eyes, his pointed ears.

Kaz laughed and took out his phone.

"I probably should have asked for it earlier," he said. "I could have given you a warning before just showing up on your door."

He read his numbers out for Luke and then opened up the contacts menu to add the other boy's number in as well.

"I'm excited for this," Kaz admitted. It'd been a while since he attempted to have fun.

He wasn't entirely sure he knew how.

That's why he was all nervous again, wasn't it?

Luke smiled softly at the joke about being eaten. He wondered what it was like to be something other than a generic human. He shrugged and then glanced at Kaz, however he then blinked several times in confusion before ignoring the strange feeling he'd just had. "I swear..he just had pointed ears.." Luke mentally shrugged and went back to listening to Kaz.

"Well..I-it's alright if you want to stop by.." Luke mumbled after he blushed as Kaz mentioned the earlier incident. Along with the memories that came forward artfully reminding him of just how under dressed he considered himself at that moment.

After he added Kaz's contact info to his phone, he glanced at him again as he began speaking. While Luke did agree with the excitement, he felt strangely nervous at the same time. This was the first time he'd ever gone to such a large social event, hell, it was the first time he'd gone with someone else that wasn't an adult.

"I'm..kind of nervous.." He whispered, although he instantly regretted speaking his feelings. He just hoped Kaz wouldn't mistake his nervousness for apprehension.
