The First Hello of Many

Nova was going about her usual routine after classes concluded. First of all, she immediately removed the band which tied her thick blue hair into a ponytail. How she hated that ponytail. But otherwise her hair would drape all over her schoolwork and nothing would be achieved. Her abundance of hair fell to her sides, just where she liked it. Her next move was finding a snack to eat at the canteen. Settling on a muffin, she gathered her belongings and started to walk towards her dorm to begin her dreaded homework. A distraction now would be great, she thought to herself. She was a studious girl, but that did not exclude her from hating homework.

It was just then that the distraction revealed itself. A boy, possibly a similar age to herself walked by. She did not get a very good look at him, but he was good-looking, admittedly. She was not about to approach someone solely based on their appearance. No, that would be terribly 'shallow' of her, as humans would say. She would approach someone because she wanted to meet more people. Yes, that was it. But how would she do such a thing? She wasn't going to run into him, or drop her books or something pointless such as that. She couldn't just initiate conversatoon with a complete strange for no apparent reason, could she?

Actually, why was she still staring at him? Pulling her eyes away, she pretended to be intrigued by her muffin. Glancing back up, she realised he had noticed her stare. Maybe that was the worst way of meeting someone. Frantically thinking of an explanation, she waited for him to confront her. Her only hope was to think of a valid enough excuse so that he would brush off the situation as a coincidence.

The young mage moved the halls, his curious eyes watching everything, this was his new home and and everything was new.

He noticed someone approaching, a green skinned girl, lovely, as they neared he noticed that she seemed to be staring. He couldn't help but blush a bit, this was new.

As he neared she turned her attention to her muffin. He smiled brightly, "hello," he said his strange yet pleasant accent. "My name is Roland Knightkin," he bowed, as he always do, though this was first time he'd smiled in a long time.

As the boy approached her, Nova got increasingly more apprehensive. What did he think of her staring? She fidgeted with a lock of hair in one hand and clutched her muffin in the other. Her hair was like her safety blanket. If anything went wrong, her natural instinct was to hide in it. That was part of the reason why she hated having it in a ponytail so much. Her muffin in her other hand was intact at least. She still hadn't taken a bite out of it.

As as he approached her, all she wanted to do was cower away under her hair. He was a totall stranger and yet she felt so much more nervous with him than she would usually feel. She just had to face him with a cheery face and a voice calm and modern. She had been practicing her modern English and was improving quickly.

The boy's hair was dark and ruffled, falling in locks onto his face. His dark eyes seemed to see straight through her and she felt a little overwhelmed. His cheeks reddened a little. Her skin was completely different to his and so she had no clue what it meant, but had read about it showing when a person was too hot. Was he too hot?

His smile lit up his face as he spoke in a rich accent she was yet to hear from anyone else. He bowed to her, and she felt like a princess from the storybooks she had read.

"Hello," she said in return, the thought of her modern speech slipping her mind in the moment. "My name is Nova. I am no princess, why do you bow before me?" She asked.

His smile never his face, he did chuckle a bit, "it's a common way of greeting people where I'm from." He tilted his head curiously, her manner of speach was similar to his, which intrigued him, "it is meant to greet everyone."

His blush faded a bit as he spoke to her, she seemed kind.

His smile brightened even more, "it is a pleasure to meet you Nova," he had just arrived, so meeting a new person was nice, "you have a lovely name." Roland wasn't necessarily shy, but he was quiet, "I just arrived, finished moving my dorm."

The boy who stood before her claimed he treated everyone like princess. Her face relaxing, she was comfortable speaking in her natural voice to him. "Is that so? Does the place you are from happen to have a name?" She asked him. "I must admit I have never before been greeted in this way." On her planet, hugs were generally used as a form of greeting. She had learnt human customs were different to theirs, yet a bow was something she had never witnessed in her year of causing screams of terror.

Nova noticed the redness of Roland's cheeks fading. Had he cooled down again? She wondered what it was that had made him heat up. She certainly had not felt it.

"Likewise, Roland," she replied, her voice hushed so as to conceal the words she spoke from the ears of outsiders. Her word choices were somewhat of an insecurity of hers, and only those who spoke similarly were to notice. "You are too kind, though it was not given to me at birth." Meeting a new person was nothing out of the ordinary for her, yet the feeling she got from his words was one she could not explain.

"I have not long been in this place either, but I do not understand. You can physically move your dormitory?" She did not think this possible. This place may very well be more enchanted than she thought.

"I hail from Avalon, another island, one far from here," he had been informed that many had read the stories of King Arthur and Merlin, though he suspected that some haven't. "It is common in Avalon, though I hear it is not as common elsewhere," he had never left Avalon before, "if you wish, we could greet in a manner common to your home."

He smiled, "a chosen name is often more beautiful and more important," he said in his strange accent, "for you chose it, it's meaning can be stronger through this."

This girl seemed unique to him, different from anyone he admit. He laughed a bit, "my apologies, English is not my first language, I believe moved in is proper way to say it."

"You hail from another island? You fell from the sky?" She asked. Fragments of human terms remained missing from her vocabulary, 'hailing' being a word forgotten throughout her species' history. "I suppose I have done the same," she admitted, referencing her journey from another planet. She was surprised to hear that others had done the same as her.

"I hear that many gestures are different in other places," she reasoned, "Although the time has passed for greetings. My home is far away, and I have not accepted that yet. Unfortunately I believe it is time to conform to the standards of my new world." she had not directly revealed her species, but she thought it to be obvious. The oddity that was her body made it clear to most that she was not of this world.

Trying to meet Roland's gaze, Nova fidgeted with her uniform, feeling for pockets or something to hold onto that was not there. Something about his accent or the way that he spoke made her feel so comforted, but very strangely warm. It was as if she felt the heat of her home planet once more instead of a cold winter's day. What kind of strange magic allowed this, and was it the same sensation affecting Roland? "I see the truth in that. You speak to me as if I am a princess too. Does this chivalry extend to all whom you meet?"

"Oh, of course," she said, her lips forming a half-smile on her face. "I do speak English, and always have. I suppose I speak a different dialect to most." She hoped nobody else would notice her speaking her natural dialect. More evolved speakers would certainly call her out on it.

This girl intrigued him, she seemed unlike anyone he had ever met, "hail is a word that can mean different things where I'm from, it merely means I am from that island," he was comfortable around this girl.

"New world?" he asked curiously, "your from another world, that is truly amazing," he said with calm admiration. He had met some inter-dimentional beings but never talked extensively to a person from another world.

He chuckled a bit, "I do bow to everyone in greeting," he tilted his head and smiled, "and though you may not be of royal blood, you have the beauty of a true princess."

"Oh. I apologise then. Although I also hail from an island, in that case. For I came to Earth from another planet, and then to Manta Carlos from another island." How peculiar, she thought. She smiled to herself at her own comment. She had never before thought of that.

"My langauge is developing still. Please bear with me while I repair it." And I will repair it, she promised herself. Growing more confident yet still in awe of the conversation, Nova stopped herself from fidgeting and looked into Roland's curious, dark eyes.

"Yes... Amazing..." She trailed off, becoming momentarily uncomfortable. All of the feelings of loneliness, of longing and regret flooded back into her. This was not the kind of emotion she was prepared to bring up with a handsome stranger. This kind of emotion was something she had never admitted to anybody. "I mean-" she started, thinking up how she could deflect the topic and turn the conversation into something more appropriate for a first encounter. "Another island is like another world. It is isolated from other places. So really, you come from another world too. What was your world like?" The deflection was neither obvious nor completely concealed. One who was particularly observant would surely notice something was off.

"A princess?" She asked, taken aback. "Oh no, I do not believe I resemble a princess in the least. I mean, how many princesses have you known of with green skin? It is always the witches depicted with green skin. I do not want to be considered a witch. No, you are much more a prince than I will ever be a princess, I am afraid." He looked identical to a prince, in truth.

He smiled, "the way you speak is very pleasant," he said with a smile, "you should not change to fit in, the people here should accept you," he meant it, this girl seemed special, a person to be appreciated.

He chuckled, "I suppose you're right, an island is it's own world." He thought about Avalon, how best to describe it, "it is populated by large mage clans, people with magical abilities. Many different kinds, me and my family focused on spells." His smile vanished as he remembered the conflict over the Merlin scrolls, the death he had seen and even caused.

He forced his smile back and shook his head, "green is a lovely color, you have nothing to fear." He gently took her hand, "I am just a mage, no prince, but I do know that your beauty if unique, special, truly remarkable."
