so long, lonesome

Johann nodded gently as he listened to the blonde speak. He continued eying the floorboards beneath his feet as if there were some answer hidden within them. "[There is nothing left there for either of us, now. There is no reason to go back.]"

Anything else he might have said was lost as soon as he heard Aldric's latter commentary.

The wave of hurt washed over him anew; the ache in his chest throbbed. Yet unlike earlier, where there was chaotic lashing out, now...Now there was only an unsteady, pained sigh. He was so tired — was there ever going to be any relief to this ache?

"[I--you have to understand, I--I cannot get it out of my head. I cannot erase the memory. It has been there, always. I relive it every time I think of that night, every time I think of what was going to be said. I have existed with the pain every moment of every day. No matter how hard I try, I cannot forget. Sometimes, I wish I could...But...]"

Here he gave a sad, wry smile — one of those slow, somewhat wide smiles that, instead of coming from joy, came from heartbreak.

"[But if I could, surely I would forget all of the good things as well. It is cruel.]"

Any man with half a brain would not have mentioned the sore topic of Johann's death, at least not only once he had calmed down. But to Aldric, it did not seem like a temporary calm—it was the kind of calm that came after a storm, once the tempest had its tantrum and settled back into itself.

"[You relive that memory, but your memory isn't correct,]" said Aldric. "[I can't say I know how painful it is to think about it every moment of every day. I don't. But I do know that your heart was weak. It was always weak. I tried to keep you from the more arduous chores because I feared too much labor would cause your heart to give out. I never told you—I was never sure if I should.]"

He sighed. He lowered his eyes for a moment, but lifted them again just as quickly as a smile came across Johann's face. It was a beautiful smile, but it lacked joy; it was the kind of smile that came when one acknowledged their sorrow.

"[The good things are what have kept me going these years,]" he said. "[I thought all this time you died knowing I was trying to save you, and that helped me through. My God, I was wrong."

Again, a mirthless laugh sat in his chest, but he did not give voice to it. He wouldn't.

"[What was it you wanted to tell me that night? I have wondered for so long. I tried and tried, but I could never figure it out.]"

The smile lingered, and his cheeks ached with it. He inhaled deeply, breathed in uselessly, and released it in a slow huff. "[Perhaps. But it is so hard to break the spell of it. I have lived with it so long.]" It would take time for his reality to shift around to accept this new information. Everything was too raw for it to happen now.

"[They have also kept me motivated, as well. Without them, I do not know where I would be.]"

A pause, and then:

"[Perhaps we were both wrong.]"

Johann couldn't help himself when he heard Aldric's question, his amber gaze flitting upward to fixate on the vampire's face. His pale features overtaken by genuine surprise and uncertainty.

"[I--I do not know if you really want to hear it, after all this time. Surely I have done enough to you already this evening.]"

Perhaps, Johann said, as if there existed in the cause of his death any shred of ambiguity. The smile, small as it had been, disappeared from his face. Now Aldric stared at Johann, his features as unreadable as ever, and wondered what more he could possibly say to plead his case.

“[I know one night cannot undo two hundred years worth of thought,]” he said, “[but I hope you’ll at least consider what I’ve said.]”

He was not a killer. He was not. He would not let that be said of him, or even believed of him—and though it might take time to persuade Johann to see reason, he would endeavor to undo that dangerous thought.

“[I can’t compromise when I am sure of what happened,]” he said.

Johann remembered what he had wanted to say that night. It must have been of utmost importance, if it stayed with him this long. Aldric frowned, just slightly. Tonight had been heavy for them both. Perhaps, in this, Johann was right—perhaps it was best to save it for another time. They could not bridge an absence of over a century in a single evening.

“[I do want to hear it. It has haunted me,]” he said. “[You do not have to tell it, but I have wondered, all this time, what it might have been. Perhaps another night?]”

[BCOLOR=transparent]Johann's amber gaze flitted over the vampire’s stoic features, taking in his expression, noting his barely perceptible frown. His own brow furrowed, conflict written across his pale face. Every fiber of his being was torn. The logical half of him said enough damage had been caused this evening. The rest of him seized in panic and said, [/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]what if now is the last chance you have.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]His chest ached, and reflexively he raised one hand to curl against his sternum. Slowly, a shaky resolve set in. He inhaled wearily.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]“[[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]If it has truly haunted you all this time, I shall tell you. With how fate has been, we may not get another chance.[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]]”[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]In life, he would have felt giddy, nervous. Now, he only felt that heavy sense of rue.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]“[[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]I had meant to tell you--[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]]”[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Each word was like cement on his tongue, every syllable a small battle to be won. Johann could not meet Herr Reinhardt's gaze and instead he found himself staring at the floor.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]“[[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]That I loved you.[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]]”[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]It burned to say--past tense, [/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]loved [/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]instead of [/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]love[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]--as if a glimmer of [/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]something[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent] did not still flutter in his hollow chest. But he couldn't acknowledge it, so he buried it. A shuddering breath left him; sheer exhaustion prevented any tears from falling.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]“[[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]Love is fruitless and futile for the dead. But at least now I have said my piece.[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]]”[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Peace, however, still eluded Johann.[/BCOLOR]

Despite how unkind fate had been to them, Aldric did not think this would be their last time seeing each other. He knew, now, that he could go to the library whenever he desired to see Johann, and Johann could come here—the island was safe enough that he imagined no harm could come to them at this point in their lives.

He did not rush Johann. He waited for the explanation as he always did: with utmost patience and an expression that looked just barely interested.

But then Johann said it—I loved you—and Aldric's eyes widened at once, his brows lifted, and his lips parted slightly. The words jolted him into a new consciousness that transformed the way he saw Johann, and transformed their every interaction, including the hysteria and remorse of this night.

At last he knew the depth of Johann's devotion, and it weighed heavily upon his shoulders, and it weighed even more heavily upon his heart.

Aldric averted his eyes. He blinked away the shock. Though he felt it dissipate from his features, it was only growing inside him, mixed with a cruel amalgamation of other emotions that he thought he'd settled long ago.

"[Thank you,]" he said, "[for trusting me with that after all this time.]"

He found it within him to look back at Johann. Loved, he had said. Past tense. And why should it not be? Centuries had passed. Aldric's feelings were in past tense, too.

Or so he thought.

"[It is not so futile as you'd think,]" he said.

He exhaled a long, slow breath.

"[You've rendered me speechless, I'm afraid. But I am glad to know at last—I had feared you meant to tell me something terrible. I am glad to have been mistaken.]"

[BCOLOR=transparent]He was a coward--this much he had known for quite some time. Fear had kept him from confessing while he was alive, and it was that same fear that kept him from looking up to catch Aldric’s reaction. By the time he mustered the courage to raise his gaze, he only caught a brief glimpse of his old mentor’s shock.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Johann coaxed a tiny, tired, wistful smile onto his pale lips. “[[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]You are welcome,[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]]” he managed softly.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Exhaustion tugged at him; the more fatigued he was, the more vulnerable he felt, and at the moment both sensations were at an all time high. At least the vampire didn't seem to be openly disdainful--fear of rejection was one of the main reasons he had never said anything to begin with.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]He wasn't sure what kind of response he was looking for, though. Eventually Johann shook his head lightly.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]“[[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]You do not have to say anything, it is alright.[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]]” A hesitant pause came, then: “[[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]I grow weary. I must excuse myself. Good evening, my lord.[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]]”[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]It was an abrupt farewell, yes. But Johann was hanging by a thread. He desperately needed some space and time to clear his head--being within the vampire's presence would only continue to be distracting. So, with a practiced bow of his head, Johann pivoted for the doorway.[/BCOLOR]
