They hadn't bothered to give Riley much direction. He'd been dropped at the gates and given a small map and the instruction to head to the Administration building and find the admissions office. It had taken Riley a moment to orient himself before entering and moving towards the building.

The boy fingered the locket around his neck nervously as he entered the building. He soon found the sign that directed him to the correct office and entered, shifting the book bag he carried that had all his belongings nervously on his shoulders.

The office seemed empty, and Riley was glad for that. He didn't really have the energy to deal with a room few of people right now. He was exhausted and starving. He didn't know which he wanted to do more, sleep or eat.

The teenager walked up to the desk. "Um...excuse me?" he said, voice wavering nervously. "My name's Valentine. Riley Valentine. They said this is where I should come," he said. The receptionist smiled and nodded, telling him to take a seat while she found his information.

Riley nodded and moved to sit down, looking around the office silently as he waited.

Rory Voltaire

The young man had passed by the administrative office probably a dozen times before he actually looked up to see the sign that would have bitten him if it had been a snake, and stepped through the doorway. At least he would have but he saw the receptionist turning away just as he approached to retrieve someone else's paper work. He cocked a hip out and leaned it on the door frame. He had been at the school for a couple of weeks but hadn't finished his paper work up yet but, since he hadn't been in a hurry, he put it off for as long as he could.

Today was that day he was pushed to complete it with nothing else demanding his attention and the weekend looming. His friend, Miya, had invited him to a party on Saturday and begged him to come. After turning her down several times he finally conceeded and ended up here. He glanced over the new kid and smiled at him, "Hey, I'm Rory. What's up?"

Riley heard footsteps by the door and glanced up quickly. He offered the newcomer a quick smile before glancing away again, fingering his locket again as his mind wandered in thought. He wondered where his father was right now, and how he would react to the knowledge that there was a whole other world out there with people like him. People who were different.

The teen was broken from his thoughts by the other speaking. “Rory,” he repeated, testing the word and accentuating it as if it was a question. Riley wasn’t sure if he had heard it correctly or not, since he hadn’t even been paying attention.
The receptionist called him back up then and Riley quickly stood to move to the desk and take the packet of information handed to him and the paperwork to fill out. He returned to the seat and prepared to start working on the paperwork. First, however, he addressed Rory again.

“I just got here,” Riley said with a soft shrug, before he blushed a bit. He realized that 'here' was ambiguous. Did he mean here in the office? Here in the school? “On the island I mean,” he clarified quickly.

"Rory, indeed." He found himself saying and punctuating it with a nod. He took notice of how the kid wasn't paying too close of attention to him and wondered where his mind was at the moment. It could have been a million miles away back at home while his body was stuck here on an island where he knew no one and had no friends. Rory just so happened to be in the market for some friends and if acquiring one while filling out paper work happened, well he was ok with that too.

When the woman returned with Riley's packet it was the blonde's turn to step up and ask for his own though he couldn't help but glance at the other male's packet with disdain. All he could think of was how much more he was adding to his plate during his studying hours but it was his fault for having waited so long to complete it. "Could I get my packet too, please?" He asked and flashed a brilliant smile at the receptionist. She shook her head at him but still had a fond smile in place, "Rory, you should have had your papers filled out a while ago."

"I know but I've been..busy. Can't you make an exception this one time?" He pleaded with her and she nodded with raised a stern finger at him. "This one time but in the future I expect your papers to be in on time!" He nodded and she moved away to grab them. He breathed a sigh of relief and looked back at the kid. "Yeah, I sort of guessed that. So what's your power or powerS?"

Riley tried not to make it obvious he was listening to every word as the other went up to the desk. He filed out the easiest information first so he could listen at the same time, the whole time wondering what sort this person was. He knew it was rude to eavesdrop, but the boy couldn’t help himself. This was a whole new world, with people.

When Rory glanced back, Riley was looking up. He quickly looked back down, writing again as he spoke. “Fire…uh, I can make and control it, I mean, and I guess I heal pretty fast,” Riley said. Could he actually talk about it here? The thought was a novel one. He didn’t have to hide it here. Sure, he probably should have realized that when he was told what this place was, but it had all happened so fast he hadn’t really had time to process it all yet.

It was an exhilarating thought, and Riley started to smile as he continued down the packet.

“What about you?” he asked curiously, looking up to Rory.

"Me?" He asked but didn't get to finish before the receptionist had returned with his papers and another stern reminder. The blonde thanked her and stepped away to drop in to a seat across from Riley. He eyed the boy who was cute but mousy. He supposed that if he had been raised up, as he assumed most of those who were sent to this school had been, being told that he was a freak then he would have been too. But, this wasn't about him.

"Overly simplified, I can read minds and emotions. It's exhausting at times. I try to keep away from crowds which makes attending parties and other fun activities almost impossible."

He sat his papers down on the table between them and took up one of the few writing utensils placed on it. Slitting open the packet's edge and pulling some of the papers out he thought that there was no way he would get them done and turned in on time to be able to join his friends. The thought both relieved and annoyed him at the same time. Perhaps he could make an excuse and go to the gym instead.

"Fire is an interesting ability. There's a bonfire, party sort of thing happening. You should go. You'd probably have a good time and make some friends." He said without looking up because he was currently scanning one of the pages over about medical history.

Riley's bag was still on his back, so he took a moment to place it at his feet so he could sit more comfortably. One part of his mind focused on the paperwork, while the other focused on listening to Rory. "My name's Riley, by the way," he said offhandedly when he realized he hadn't yet told the other his name, the paperwork serving a gentle reminder.

"That seems interesting," Riley said in response to Rory's explanation to his powers. It did seem like an interesting ability, if annoying. He got overwhelmed just by being around a few people, he couldn't imagine what it would be like to have to hear their every thought. "So, is that like a constant thing or can you turn it on and off?" he asked, glancing up to watch Rory's face as he spoke. He was very curious about this new world and the people in it. He just hoped he wasn't being rude or prying.

"A party? When?" Riley asked, returning his attention to the paperwork and filling out a couple more fields. He wondered how much longer this paperwork was going to take.

Rory let his lips curl in to a grin at the corner even as his gaze remained glued to the pages set before him. "It is a bit annoying. I had shields built up at one time but someone b-broke them down." Only the hitch on a single word was the evidence that there was more to that story than he was going to let on. Clearing his throat the blonde lifted the papers and tapped them on the solid surface of the table between them. He picked up the envelope his had come in and shuffled them back inside. Suddenly he felt the thick of tension in the air or perhaps it was just him.

The half smirk dropped to a soft smile. "Not to worry though it didn't happen here. Here I'm taking classes to help me gain control and build the shields back up. I'm not sure if it works the same for everyone but this is what it's like for me..." Trailing off the boy sat his papers down and leaned forward to reach for Riley's face, "May I?"

Riley only got more curious about the teen in front of him when Rory's voice hitched. He shifted a bit closer and let his eyes travel back up to the boy's face to watch him. He only glanced back away when Rory cleared his throat, a soft blush creeping over his cheeks again from thinking he had been caught staring.

Riley quietly finished up his own page of paperwork, filing the sheet back into his own envelope. He was easily distracted by those, and though he was listening he was not watching. At the question, Riley glanced up and was surprised by how close Rory had come while he hadn't been watching.

"I-I guess," Riley answered, scooting his chair a bit closer to the table and thus to Rory.

Rory wet his dry lips and pressed the flat of his palm against the other boy's cheek. His palm was warm to the touch but the tips of his fingers were cold from the chilly air outside. Normally he tried to pull his long sleeves over his hands but neglected that once inside the building.

Once his palm touched down the blonde let the contact spark his focus to transmit a picture through his own mind and in to Riley's own. He deployed an odd tactic when doing this that resembled someone walking up to a door and knocking on it to ask for entrance instead of just forcing himself inside their head. With permission already having been granted by the brunette Rory let the image go. Riley had asked about the party and when it was and this would be the way that Rory would tell him about it. Without the blonde putting too much thought in to the idea that he was practicing without realizing it he was.

A small white spark appeared before the image of a well beaten dirt path way could be seen leading from the courtyard and towards the dense forest surrounding the school. The images played like pages in a book being flipped rather than a video as they progressed since Rory had more work to do where his powers were concerned. A large pyre of wooden logs stood up to form a tall tent like shape were put together in a circle. The pyre was formed in a clearing within the woods and was large enough to accommodate a big group of people later in the evening.

A table was set up off to the side of the unlit pyre and filled with skewers and various food items for roasting over the fire. Drink containers were placed among the food. The image would linger for a moment before Rory slowly withdrew himself from Riley's mind and then his hand to completely break the contact between the two. He released a heavy breath and drew in a cleansing new breath with the same soft smile. "Sorry..didn't mean for it to be that long. I'm still working on everything up here." He pointed to his temple.
