Murphy simply shrugged when asked if he had any concerns or complaints about Starlight. It wasn't that he lacked interest in the ongoing actions and policies of the student council but every time he'd try to get involved, the person he was supporting suffered setbacks that ultimately lost the running. "Long as people aren't being abused and students are learning I'm generally fine with things. Not like much matters in the long run yeah?"

He shied away from reptiles and birds of prey, there were too many things that could go wrong with either. He'd tried his hand at lizards but the bulbs on their heat lamps kept burning out for some reason and hawks... well, he had scars from THAT particular mistake. The idea of getting a fox appealed to him but when Milo began listing creatures he'd assumed to be mythical his interest was arrested.

"Wait, you're telling me you have... flaming birds and dragons among your adoptees?" It was more out of shock than anything. He didn't even imagine trying to adopt, let alone control or train one of those things. A jackalope sounded manageable, though of all their more mystical creatures he imagined they'd have the least trouble finding homes. Even hellhounds sounded cute if one could manage their supposed fire breath. His hut, for lack of a better descriptor lay just beyond a lake. Perhaps something aquatic would work. "Don't suppose you have like, a baby hydra or something?" He asked them both, half jokingly.

"Drakes, not dragons," Maddie corrected. "Dragons wouldn't take well to being pets." Maddie may have gone on from there, but she couldn't remember if it was that nothing on Manta Carlos with above human intelligence were pets, or something else? Weren't Pheonix's smarter than most people? Crap, Maddie couldn't remember.

Vinnie, for the most part, had been zoning in and out as he listened. He was trying to keep focus, but he didn't know what most of these creatures were. 'Flaming bird' caught his attention enough to have him shake his head and hone in on the conversation again.

"Hydra?" Vin asked, knowing he'd heard that before. It took him a second to recall before recognition flashed in his eyes. "Yes, but they get big."

"Ah, apologies. The sources on it tend to be torn on whether drakes and dragons are actually separate or not, or if all dragons even oppose to being kept as… well, pet is a strong word. Companions? Familiars? Something along those lines." Milo scrubbed his face a bit, sighing. "It's complicated and argued on a lot, apparently. Having dragon in-laws is makin' this weirder for me, too."

Milo disagreed with what Murphy had said, but respected the other enough not to argue, so he simply hummed. It was possible he had other reasons behind that kind of lacking response, as well. He seemed like an interestingly jumpy and worried guy.

The strawberry blond smirked. "It's Manta Carlos. We have a lot, believe me. It's not like these are even all the creatures we have, there's more back at the center, mostly brought smaller animals over today." At Murphy's 'joke', he raised an eyebrow, smile growing a little. He nodded along with Vin's words.

"Got a canopy for the aquatic things that want to hang out in nice cool tanks over there." He gestured to it with a short tilt of his head. "I thought you were staying away from the dangerous leaning stuff? I suppose, since you'd be getting it young, the hydra wouldn't exactly be hostile towards you, but…" Towards others, and with no risk at all, was a stretch.

Murphy grinned, "Yeah, I know that it wouldn't be the most intelligent thing to do. The things are carnivorous and can get mean especially if they get a handful of heads. I'm just trying to figure out what kind of semi aquatic critter would be able to make use of the lake next to my cabin." He'd been told that the lake led to a huge underground waterway and the idea of something friendly between him and whatever might lurk beneath the earth seemed like a good idea.

He glanced at Milo when he brought up the tricky subject of sentient beasts. "Eh, long as everyone's happy there's no harm in it right? I mean, I've only met a couple of- god it feels weird to talk about meeting dragons at all so casually- but the ones I've met seem to be fine if treated like anyone else. Do you guys work like an adoption agency for them since you seem to have the in-depth knowledge to take care of them?" He wandered towards the canopy and knelt down beside one of the tanks full of little kelp-like creatures.

"I think that even more than safety, even more than mine or anyone else's comfort, I want to give something that's not likely to get a home... well, a home."

"Oh? Hm, yeah, that'd be a nice thing to take advantage of," Milo noted. Keeping your environment in mind when choosing animals to support was pretty damn important.

"Although I did say some creatures might be more okay with certain concepts of companionship, and being cared for like a pet, we're pretty careful about sentience levels at the shelter. The lawsuits would be off the charts otherwise, and we need our money to keep order with our more high maintenance, destructive animals, and just provide for everything in general, not dealing with that trainwreck," he said dryly.

"It does feel pretty weird. My sister's marrying into a huge dragon clan, which means I'm going to just be hanging around them from now on at holidays, I suppose. I'm a Fae changeling myself, came from a pretty dull human town, so this is all still very wild and dazzling to me."

He paused. "…So, is that a yes on the hydra? You wanna pet it?"

"Most sentient beings are sent to the orphanage if they want to be adopted," Maddie added, stepping around Milo fully now so that she was standing directly at his side. She smiled up at him, face slightly flushed.

Vinanye was ecstatic about the idea of Milo's dragon family. He hadn't heard of it before then, and it showed on the broad grin he threw Milo's way. It got Vinnie wondering where he would go for the holidays, or what the holidays here even were. Were they the same as in Underhill?

"Do you plan on letting the hydra hunt for its food?" Vin asked.

Changeling? Oh god damn it, ANOTHER one of the fu- no, no, he couldn't let the paranoia control his life again. There were a thousand things that could be referred to as 'Fae' and Milo probably wasn't even related to the one that tried to rip his throat out last Halloween. Still, the revelation froze him for a moment before he rushed to keep up in conversation.

"Y-yeah, I'll bet that makes the holidays a little more interesting. I mean, I'm still trying to wrap my head around that-" he motioned to the buildings around them, '-THIS exists. I mean can you imagine what people outside of here would think if they knew?"

He moved over to a tank with a small, sharp-toothed serpent nipped at him through the glass. "I think that if I do get a pet that can hunt, I'd like to let it do so. I mean if it's very young I could of course feed it at first but I'd feel wrong if I didn't let it do what comes natural... if that makes sense." He rose to his full height again and stretched. "You know, I think I would like to at least meet the hydra you have assuming it wouldn't be too much trouble for you all."
