RE: TO BE TITLED

For someone who's never attended one, the graduation was interesting enough for Adelene to be giddy in her spot where she watched, though she wouldn't qualify it as exciting. The only exciting part was when Lochlann had gone up the stage to receive his certificate, and for the moment, Adelene felt happy and excited and proud... and sad because she didn't think she had anything to do with that. She should mind her own business, really. But she can't. And she was glad she was even invited to this event.

She was waiting for Lochlann outside, just as everybody else was. It was suffocating, honestly. Being in a crowd and practically not knowing most faces around her, she felt like she was going to drown.

Hearing her name called by a familiar voice was like a wave of fresh air.

She grinned, and the phone she's been clutching was quickly kept away to her shoulder bag as she turned to Lochlann. Her body would move on its own, quickly running to his direction and jumping up to pull him down by the neck. She wanted to kiss him, but that, she managed to... not do.

"Loch! Congratulations!" she greeted, ruffling his hair before letting him go. "How are you?"

She came towards him and jumped and automatically, Lochlann's arms went around her, holding her up under her butt while he buried his face in her neck.

Of course, his first instinct had been to kiss her.

He managed not to, instead holding her tight in a tug and then setting her down as her fingers ruffled his hair.

"Hey angel," he murmured. He sounded tired, and he pinched the bridge of his nose for a moment. "I'm glad you came. I'm sorry you had to sit through that. That seemed to take forever....or maybe it was just me."

He hadn't had anything to drink for a few hours now and this headache was threatening him. Still, he was very happy to see her, and it reflected in his posture.

"My uh..." he hesitated, unable to look her in the eye while he said this. "My family is here. They'd like to meet you."

RE: TO BE TITLED

"It took a while, but hey it's done now! Don't worry about me, I loved seeing you on the stage." Her smile didn't leave her face. Lochlann looked exhausted, and she wanted to be the source of his energy today. She wanted him to know that she loved being there, for him.

Her heart did this stupid flip when Lochlann mentioned his family. She'd love to meet them too, or more like she's been wanting to. She nodded.

"I'd love to meet them."

Meeting them meant knowing Lochlann more, and the people in his life, more. He's already told her about this, and she's been excited the whole day to meet them.

Probably one more thing was that she always loved meeting others' parents, because she was always curious about what they're like.

She tugged on his hand and didn't let go, she wanted to pull him away from this crowd already. "So where are you meeting them?"

RE: TO BE TITLED

Lochlann's voice was quiet and he still couldn't look her in the eyes, but he reached out and held her hand for a moment.

"I'm glad you came," he said. "It means a lot to me that you did."

He gave her hand a gentle squeeze and then Lochlann was reluctant to drop it, but he did let it go. Then, he wasn't sure what to do with his hands. He'd kept his promise since both the fireworks and their dinner and he'd done his best to remain normal, to act like everything was the same, but it'd been getting harder and harder to remind himself that he didn't want her the way he did.

He swallowed, and then Lochlann gave a dry laugh.

"I'm actually a little nervous," he confessed to her. "I've never introduced anyone to my family before. "

Lochlann managed to look up from the ground to catch her eye and he gave a small apologetic smile.

"I'm sorry in advance if this ends up being a horrible idea," he said. "I know they'll like you. I just hope they don't get all weird about it."

He turned and started to walk, answering her question.

"I think the plan is to meet them for a quick dinner, because there is no way in hell they're coming back to my place. If my family never stepped foot in my apartment, I could die happy," he said. He started to walk and then he stopped again and frowned. "Uh...Addy, could you do me a favor though?"

He hated that he had to ask this, hated that he had to bring up that fucking night.

"Can you not mention the time I was in the hospital? They don't need to know that," he said. He couldn't meet her gaze again.

RE: TO BE TITLED

It did feel different, didn't it? Adelene was still acting like her usual self around Lochlann, and she saw he was trying to do the same, but it didn't feel like how it did in the past, and...

Disappointment flashed across her face for a split second when he let her go. Because she didn't want that, but at the same time she convinced herself that it was okay.

"Lochlann you sad soul," she tried to maintain her grin and the light atmosphere surrounding them, "How am I the first friend you'll ever introduce to them."

She was starting to hate that word, "friend". She didn't want that as a label anymore.

She was worried she was going to intrude to a family night if she was going to join their quick dinner, but she constantly convinced herself that Lochlann had invited her and she was with him and there was nothing to worry about. And there really was nothing to worry about.

Until Lochlann mentioned the hospital and everything about that night flashed back to her. Lochlann's frown was contagious and it infected her easily.

"Of course, Loch. We can't afford to ruin the day, it's your day. We're celebrating!" That frown only lasted a moment though, and before she knew it, her bright smile was already back to her lips, attempting to infect Lochlann this time.

She'd stare at his face for a couple of moments, and then look around for any clues for the family. She wasn't doing that good, with so many people still around.

RE: TO BE TITLED

"I moved a lot," Lochlann confessed. "I got expelled several times for fighting. I didn't really get to make good friends like I did with you."

And then, of course, Lochlann had eaten his girlfriends before he'd ever had the chance to take them home.

He stopped suddenly again, turning so quickly to look at her that the distance between them disappeared and he was only inches from her, peering down into her face. He was a dark figure cut out again the mid August sky, and the angle of the sun hit Addie like a back drop and reminded him of how beautiful she was.

"I'm very glad I met you," Lochlann said. "My life is better with you in it."

Her smile was contagious and Lochlann caught it from her.

And then, before Lochlann could realize that he'd started to blush, he turned and started walking again because he'd caught sight of his family. The duo was standing beneath a tree, out of the way of the people milling about, and Lochlann waved them over.

There was definitely a family resemblance between Lochlann and his siblings. Lawrence was the oldest by several years and though he had Lochlann's cheekbones and green eyes, his dark hair was cropped short. The ends still had that Irish curl to them, but there was more of their mother in his face. Lillianna, though young, already made an impressive silhouette with her curves and long, straight black hair. She had a way of standing that made her look like she was bored, even though her eyes betrayed she was watching everything with keen interest.

When Lochlann approached his two siblings, he stood closer to Adelene so they'd know she was his/ He wrapped an arm around her hips automatically, claiming her.

"Addy," he said, motioning to her and his siblings. "This is my brother, Lawrence, and my sister, Lillianna."

"Charmed," Lawrence said to her, offering his hand out to shake. He still carried an accent, something between Irish and Welsh.

"Hey," Lillianna said. She did not offer her hand, but eyed Adelene like a hawk might eye a field mouse. There was an unspoken question on her face as she tried to establish this relationship. Friend or dinner meal?

Addy's answer would determine that.

"I'm very glad I met you. My life is better with you in it."

"So is mine." That was a beautiful sight, Lochlann standing right in front of her and smiling and blushing even. Adelene chuckled, letting him take the lead towards those two people under a tree. They looked like Lochlann enough for her to know who they were.

She smiled at them, but that smile faltered when Lochlann pulled her by the hips, replaced by a slightly surprised gasp. But she smiled at them again anyway, giving a small and shy hand wave.

"Nice to meet you," she said, holding out her hand to accept Lawrence's handshake.

She let go, turning to Lillianna. The way Lochlann's sister eyed her made her a little bit uncomfortable, mostly because she didn't know what it meant. So she couldn't get herself to offer a handshake. "Hey. I heard you've painted Loch's nails hot pink once."

Oh, just great, Adelene. You just had to say that first.

She felt her face burn. She's just realized how nervous she was, and for some reason she felt like she was going to do a lot of messing up.

Lillianna eyes Adelene for another moment, and then a smirk spread across her face and she held her hand out to Addy. She shot Lochlann a look that seemed to say haha loser and then nodded at Addy.

"Yup," she said. Unlike her brothers, the only accent she had was American. "He couldn't get it off his hoov--"

She stopped because Lochlann shot his sister a withering glance, and the pull of Lawrence's eyebrows indicated a moment's confused.

"Oh," Lawrence said. "You mean you haven't--"

Lochlann shook his head very suddenly.

The exchange happened quickly, while Lillianna was saying —"whoole nails for weeks. Did he tell you we even did his toes?"

And then, she gave Addy a conspiratory grin and leaned in closer to the girl. "Did he tell you what we did to his hair, too?"

They'd only been around his siblings for five minutes, but Lochlann was already exhausted. He pulled Addy closer to him, close enough that she could probably hear the way his heart was hammering in his chest.

"Okay well this is great, we all know each other now," Lochlann said. "We should..we should go eat. Yes. Food. What are you all feeling like for dinner?"

He looked at Addy first when he asked this. Lawerence lifted an eyebrow and frowned, misinterpreting the gesture. Lochlann was just desperate to get out of the street.

There was a split-second of panic. Why was Lillianna suddenly smirking? For a moment, Adelene felt like she was caught in some kind of trap, but that anxiety quickly disappeared when Lillianna finally spoke to her.

She chuckled-- a sign that she's loosened up-- leaning close when Lillianna did. She hadn't noticed that momentary glance between the siblings and through it was something between them and she didn't have to know.

"Is that even for real??" she snickered. Picturing Lochlann with pink nails was bad enough; toenails were unbearably hilarious. "What happened to his hair then? Tell--"

She made a startled noise, suddenly being pulled like that. She shot Lochlann a why-did-you-do-that glance, though she didn't squirm in his hold. She could definitely hear his heartbeat. He sounded... troubled? Nervous? Either way, his heartbeat was ironically calming.

"Well, what kind of food do you feel like getting?" she asked, addressing all three siblings. There was no way she could choose for all of them, after all. "I wonder if you've looked around," she added, turning to Lillianna specifically. "There are all kinds of places we could visit for food! There are cafés, pizzerias, steak houses, Italian restaurants, ba--oh that's out of the question. So anyway, any cravings?"
