”That’s so sweet, Angel,” Lochlann said, and he reached out and gave her another awkward hug thing just because he couldn’t stand to not be touching her. ”I’m okay, though. I just forget sometimes….and then I make up for it by eating soooo much barbeque.”

He ordered their sandwiches and asked for a small bag to carry their stuff with., since he was still hoping to take her to the bookstore to watch the fireworks. Absentmindedly, his eyes followed someone juggling fire down the streets. It was getting late.

"Why me?" "I don't really mind, but... you have a roommate, don't you? Won't you check the place out with her? Won't that be a... a better idea?"

Lochlann looked at her with a little bit of surprise.

”I like spending time with you, though,” Lochlann said. He gave a shrug. ”I really screwed up and it’s my fault she’s here. I don’t think Vlad plans on living with me permanently—I mean she’s gonna be having a baby, she’s gonna want her own place.”

It also helped that she helped him fall asleep at night, too. Lochlann had been struggling to sleep without the pills.

”Anyway if you don’t want to come, that’s okay. I just thought maybe it could be fun, and I’d have appreciated your feedback. Even though we moved a lot I really don’t know that much about what makes a good place to live,” Lochlann shrugged again. ”So…bookstore now I guess?”

"It's not like that..." Of course she wanted to go. Adelene wanted to spend as much time with Lochlann as possible, so going with him to check the new place out, why not? She was just afraid to hear that Lochlann preferred Vlad, and she was happy that wasn't what he said. "I'll go with you there if you really want me to. No problem."

She munched on the soft pretzel as Lochlann grabbed the brisket sandwiches for them. The sky was already dark, but the streets were bright with lights and fire and things were beautiful. So far, there wasn't any problem.

"Yeah, we can go now," she answered. "You think there won't be other people there?"

"It's not like that..." "I'll go with you there if you really want me to. No problem."

Lochlann perked up again.

"I would like that," Lochlann said. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze, then brought their hands up to his mouth and kissed her fingertips. He lowered their hands and kept walking. It wasn't a gesture he planned or even realized he did.

"Yeah, we can go now," she answered. "You think there won't be other people there?"

"Probably not," Lochlann said. "I mean, with all the food and music vendors, who's going to want to be in a bookstore? That roof spot is basically our secret."

He led her through the crowd but stopped periodically if she would make even the slightest indication that she wanted to see anything. Lochlann himself was distracted at one point by a performer who was using magic to create the illusions of large, floating goldfish that went through the crowd. He watched with an expression of awe.

"I wonder what their fireworks display will be like," Lochlann said. "I heard a rumor Cabel was going to try and drug the fireworks to get people high on ecstasy-like drug, but I don't think he actually went ahead with it. He had um....he sort of had a baby I guess? I mean he has a furby he refers to as his son."

He shook his head and tried to get back on topic.

"I wonder if it's going to be normal fireworks or something magical."

He didn't care to be honest. He'd be happy to watch any kinds of fireworks as long as it was with Addy.

Why was her heart racing? Why was her face suddenly so warm? Why did Lochlann kiss her hand and why was she so flustered? Adelene didn't know what the gesture meant, she was never really good with trying to figure out those mysteries, but it made her feel dear and important to Lochlann, and that made her feel a little nervous because she wasn't sure if she was understanding and feeling it right.

For some reason, however, being reassured that there won't be other people on that roof made her happy. The reason wasn't very known to her, but she knew somehow that it would've been a sad thing if they can't be alone in that place. That bookstore roof did become special to her, after all.

"It feels nice to have our own little secret," she muttered absentmindedly.

She's started ignoring the food stalls because they already had enough for now. She's managed to eat her share of the pretzel somehow, and she got rid of their litter in a garbage bin somewhere so at some point her hands were free again, though one of them kept it's grip on Lochlann's. She didn't want to let go. His large hand always did make her feel secured.

The only stands that managed to catch her attention were the ones selling masks and crafts, and putting on shows, same as Lochlann. They halted at the floating goldfish for a while, but it didn't take long before they made their way to the bookstore again.

"That's... sick." Adelene shook her head when Lochlann brought Cabel up, though she was grinning. "I don't really mind what kind of fireworks we'll see though... I just wish they're as big as the last ones I saw... Or bigger. But... without the destruction afterwards."

She wanted a happy memory of watching fireworks with Lochlann.

They reached the bookstore eventually, and fortunately, it was still open despite having a pretty slow night. Adelene smiled, and practically pulled Lochlann to the roof.

"It feels nice to have our own little secret,"

"It does, doesn't it?" Lochlann responded in kind.

It was nice to have a secret involving a woman that didn't end in murder.

He followed Addy up through the empty bookstore and onto the roof, shutting the door quietly behind them. From here, he pulled a chair over and plopped the bag onto the chair, using it as a sort-of-table since he figured they'd be eating on the ground as usual.

he pulled off his hoodie and spread it out to sit on. The bruises on his arm had mostly healed, but there was a particularly stubborn one on his arm from the hospital that just didn't fade. He was hoping it'd be too dark to have that serve as a reminder of that unpleasent day because it seemed like things were finally returning to normal, and Lochlann didn't want to do anything to mess it up.

"Come sit with me," Lochlann said. "Before I eat your sandwich, too, because these smell really good exactly. They might even be better than mine."

He patted the ground next to her and started to unpack their dinner, passing one to her when she was ready for her. He was trying to ignore the anticipation. He hoped it was only for fireworks.

Meanwhile, Addy went straight to the railings and glanced over the whole downtown of Manta Carlos. The place was full of colorful lights and people, and laughter and movement, and Addy found herself smiling fondly at everything. Everyone seemed happy, which was truly a lovely thing to her.

At least at the moment, she wasn't haunted by the paranoia that Seth was going to ruin the night and destroy people's lives.

It was getting a little warm, so she decided to take her turtle neck sweater off for the meantime. Inside, she was wearing a white fitted sleeveless shirt that reached her hips. She hung the sweater on her right forearm, before turning to Lochlann to join him on the ground, sitting right next to him.

There weren't too many things to smell on the roof, and Adelene was close enough to smell the brisket. And they really did smell great.

"They smell delicious, don't eat mine you already have two!" she whined a little, but there was just enough light to see that she was grinning. Unfortunately, the roof wasn't as lit as everywhere else, but at least they had no trouble seeing each other and the ground, thanks to the reflections from below.

She took her sandwich and immediately took a bite. Thanks to the potato chips and the soft pretzel, she didn't have to worry about her stomach being not ready to digest meat. Unconsciously, she whimpered in delight as the flavors exploded in her mouth.

"Mmf... Wonderful," she said, her words muffled by the food in her mouth. That's all she said, before she chewed and swallowed and took another bite.

Lochlann looked up to see....

Was she?

Oh God.

Oh god yes.

They were alone on the roof and Addy was taking off her shirt! Holy shit. This was happening.

Lochlann's eyes lingered on the thin patch of skin that showed on her stomach when she lifted her arms to take the sweater off and he licked his lips, thinking about how he'd like to kiss there and then--

What the fuck was wrong with him.

This was Addy.

He tore his eyes away and spent a long time examining his sandwich, which suddenly didn't taste as good as he imagined she would.

Fuck.

He realized she was sitting next to him, saying things, and he was just zoned out, and his heart was hammering in his chest. He knew with that horrible sinking certaintly that he was going to make a mistake tonight unless he got really, really drunk.

"It is good, isn't it?" he murmured. "I love brisket."

He flopped onto his back. He needed to do something to clear his head.

There was a sudden screeching noise and lochlann tensed...but it was just the start of the fireworks. They had a perfect view.

Adelene was just... focused. On her sandwich. Until she realized... Lochlann was suddenly not so playful or teasing, and he lied down on the ground, and she looked at him with concerned eyes.

"Loch, what's wrong?" she asked, leaning closer to check on him. She had to, since it was dark. "Are you not feeling well?"

And then there was suddenly a loud high pitched sound. Adelene flinched, curling up a little closer to Lochlann before she realized it was only a teaser shot for the fireworks. They were gonna start it soon. She relaxed eventually, but she kept hugging her knees for a while as she looked up the sky.

"Hey Loch... Is it me dreaming things or... did we talk about fireworks when we were having that drinking contest..?"

Loch, what's wrong?" she asked, leaning closer to check on him. She had to, since it was dark. "Are you not feeling well?"

"Oh, no, Angel--the opposite. I'm really really good. I'm happy to be here with you," he gave her a soft smile and brushed his hand across her need to reassure her.

She got closer and Lochlann just hoped she didn't get to close to his lap, because then things would get awkward.

"Hey Loch... Is it me dreaming things or... did we talk about fireworks when we were having that drinking contest..?"

He gave a soft laugh.

"Yeah, we did. I'm surprised you remembered that. I always wanted to--"he swallowed, because he'd been about to say kiss you under the fireworks but that's not what he'd said then. It'd just been 'kiss someone'.

He realized he was staring at her lips. Lochlann reached over and took a sip of his soda, trying to focus on anything else, but his eyes kept coming back there.

"I'm happy you're here with me. There's no one else I'd rather share tonight with."

"Oh yeah, I remember now. You said it's romantic," Adelene murmured. She wasn't really looking at Lochlann, not at the moment, not while she was recalling that moment during their drinking contest. She could remember she slipped then and... and said she wanted a kiss from Lochlann. And this was making her face melt at the moment. Fortunately, he didn't seem like he noticed her slip-up then, and maybe nothing was going to happen under the fireworks tonight.

...

Adelene suddenly felt disappointed. Somehow, she wished something will happen. But she was his best friend, and only his best friend, and she knew he had other girls who were more desirable than her.

Oh god, she was torturing herself with these thoughts.

"I'm happy you're here with me. There's no one else I'd rather share tonight with."

She forced a soft laugh, but it didn't really sound so okay. "It was a fun night, wasn't it? I'm also happy I'm with you right now, Loch. At least I got to know you're recovering. I guess I can finally sleep well tonight."

They released another single teaser for the fireworks, and Adelene can hear the downtown crowd cheering for more. Her eyes were glued on the lit sky for a few more moments, before she finally turned to Lochlann and smiled.

"I think... I think I can start liking fireworks like this. It's a prettier memory than the last time." Even though I don't feel so good.
