It’s true, I am not one of the field mice like my best friend before me,” he said, teasing her. “But with all jokes aside, being tall doesn’t help when there’s so many people. And it’s not like you’d be right on my back so…”

Loclann trailed off. It’s not like he could explain that piggy back rides with him could be fatal without having to explain all the other stuff. If he was being really honest with himself—he wasn’t—Lochlann just wanted to an excuse to touch more of her. He was hurting, he was scared, and he didn’t want to lose the one good thing he had in his life. He wanted to hold her and not let her go, and fall asleep with her in his arms.

But he wasn’t honest with himself. The second he started to feel vulnerable he squashed those emotions down. His hand itched for his flask, but he’d left it at home.

If she glanced up at his face, he’d be blushing, and he might also look a little bit guilty.

“I’m pretty sure I can smell the brisket,” Lochlann said. He teased, ”Addy what do you see with your hobbit eyes from all the way down there?”

Addy was instantly... all pouts. Those were one teasing after another and they came too many times too quick for her to handle it. She glared at Lochlann, and really, she wanted to just slap him on the face, but he was blushing for some reason she didn't know.

"You okay?" she reached up absentmindedly, cupping his cheek. There was genuine concern in her eyes. "Loch, I hope you're not teasing me to try hiding something from me, because if you need anything, I want to know."

”I just need you.”

The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them and Loch’s face turned an even deeper shade of scarlet. His heart was hammering in his chest. His mouth suddenly felt dry. Could he really do this? Could he really vocalize what was in his head?

”I…I feel like I broke something that night, and I don’t know how to fix it,” he confessed. His voice was low and his hands were shaking. What the hell was wrong with him? ”I’m happy to be alive, Addy, but I don’t want to be if it means living without you.”

This was a mistake. Oh god he did not just say that. It was sort of hard to convince that he was okay when everything he said was starting to sound vaguely suicidal anymore. He wasn’t, he swore, he was just so…

”Addy I lo-“ he stopped, his eyes catching site of something else, and Lochlann grasped onto it before he could make this even worse. ”—look, we found the brisket.”

...What..?

What..?

Adelene blinked. She could feel her face heat up, but she was conflicted about what to feel, because while she was embarrassed for feeling happy with Lochlann's words, she was also worried beyond all reassurance.

Was Lochlann still not okay?

He brought up the brisket and Addy followed the direction of his stare, and for a moment, she decided to tug on Lochlann's sleeve and lead the way there. But she was suddenly so full of her own thoughts, because Lochlann's words confused her and that made her heart feel funny. The painful kind.

She didn't know what to say, but somehow, she thought holding onto Lochlann might make him feel better, maybe more reassured that she was there. So she slid her hand down to Lochlann's, locking their fingers together. She didn't mind not being able to eat her pretzel yet, that can wait later.

"Loch," she spoke as they reached the stall. She didn't look straight at him, but she squeezed his hand gently. "There's nothing broken, you know. I'll still be here for you all the time."

Addy guessed correctly, because the moment she linked her fingers in with his, Lochlann relaxed again. He let her take the lead, content to just follow. All he wanted was to be with her.

"Loch," she spoke as they reached the stall. She didn't look straight at him, but she squeezed his hand gently. "There's nothing broken, you know. I'll still be here for you all the time.

”That makes me happy,” Lochlann’s voice was small and quiet. He squeezed her hand back, and he had the sudden horrible urge to spin her towards him and kiss her, right there, without caring who saw. But he didn’t. He bit his tongue and squashed that feeling down.

He couldn’t handle all the emotion he was experiencing today. This was exhausting.

He took a step closer so he was right behind her, and wrapped his free hand around her, resting his chin ontop of her head in the most awkward friendly hug he could possibly give.

”I might get three brisket sandwiches because I think I can honestly eat two myself. Unless you wanted one and split half of another one with me? I don’t know how much room you have in that little stomach of yours.”

With his free hand, he rubbed her belly like an annoying stranger might touch a pregnant person. He was laughing, bracing himself to be kicked.

Those difficult feelings, Adelene can feel them too. And Lochlann's hand was the only thing keeping her and her mind from scattering to places. She was zoning out a little, helplessly wondering how she can manage, but then she felt Lochlann hug her, and his chin was on her head. She tilted her head upwards, but only a little bit. This was awkward indeed, mostly because they were supposed to be walking. So she stopped. And then suddenly, she felt a big hand on her stomach.

She gasped. And it was an automatic reflex when her elbow suddenly moved to hit Lochlann's ribs. She pulled away and turned around, a very flustered look on her very flushed face, though it was immediately mixed with guilt.

"I... I'm sorry," she said as she calmed down, moving towards him again. She had to see if her unintended attack would cause some bruise or injury. "I'm sorry, Loch... You shouldn't have... It... I'm... uh, ticklish, okay..? Don't do that again, you know I have fast reflexes..."

Her elbow hit his ribs hard enough to hurt and he gasped, but then he was laughing again, even as she moved towards him. He’d have another bruise, but that was par for the course with Addy, and physical pain he could deal with. He was still laughing, gasping from both the pain and the need for air as she spoke.

”Did you ever think,” he giggled, one hand on his knee to hold himself up, the other still holding the pretzel. ”that I do it because you have fast reflexes? You’re cute when you’re all flustered like that.”

He was able to right himself back up, and he rubbed his side for a moment. He was glad she’d hit him in the ribs and not a little lower. He wasn’t sure how much stock he put into Azeria’s liver failure theory, but he was trying to play it safe, just in case.

”So about that brisket my sweet angel? It’s getting a little late. Can you eat an extra half or am I going to have to gorge on two?”

Adelene pouted. "You're embarrassing me on purpose? How could you wound me like this, don't you know how hard it is for me?" There was no hint that she didn't mean it, except for the fact that she wouldn't even say those words if she were serious. The pout didn't leave her face, even as she helped him stand straight again and patted the area she hit.

But Lochlann's laugh was so lovely. It always made her happy and giddy whenever she heard it, because Lochlann was such a wreck sometimes and hearing him laugh makes her think everything will surely be okay.

With that in mind, a smile slowly managed to escape her, and she went under his arm and placed a hand on his back as if to support him while they walked. "For the brisket... I think I'll only have one. We still have this pretzel, I don't want to buy more than I can eat."

"You're embarrassing me on purpose? How could you wound me like this, don't you know how hard it is for me?"

Lochlann looked concerned for a moment, but he was suspicious of her motives.

”Babe, I’m pretty sure any wounds I give you won’t even compare to what you’ve done to me,” he grinned a slow, easy smile at her and his green eyes were surprisingly soft. She let him place a hand on his back and walk like that because it meant she was quite literally by his side.

”Adds, you underestimate the amount of food I can eat,” Lochlann said. ”I know I don’t always eat a lot in front of you, but if given the opportunity, I could probably eat nonstop for like sixteen hours or something. I just don’t like to eat.”

He led her to the line and fished some money out of his wallet. ”Besides, I’m paying for them anyway. This way when I actually make barbeque you will have something to compare it to. God, I think I really want that place. It needs some work but I’m handy. Maybe I should call them.”

Lochlann chewed on the inside of his cheek. ”….Would you be up for looking at it with me sometime?”

"Hmm... You're the first person I've heard to say you don't like eating." Addy was humming curiously. Lochlann was a tall wall of muscles, but it was true that she didn't see him eat so much very often. She hoped it wasn't another major concern. "I hope you're not skipping meals all the time though. If you are... I have no choice but to learn how to be a good cook so I can force you to eat my cooking." It was a lighthearted comment, but she meant it.

When Lochlann spoke about the barbecue though, something in Addy's stomach started turning again. She didn't recognize this feeling, but it's become so familiar to her nowadays. Because Lochlann mentioned something about his moving out plans and she couldn't help but remember his roommate.

Jealousy.

But she didn't even know she was being eaten up by this feeling. All she knew was that she didn't like his roommate, and for other reasons.

"Why me?" she asked, giving him a curious look. She did her best not to show that her chest was hurting. "I don't really mind, but... you have a roommate, don't you? Won't you check the place out with her? Won't that be a... a better idea?" An soft, awkward, and forced laugh escaped her.
