"No, no, no, not sick! I'm fine, just... uh... really hungry so... I need to fill my stomach with soft food first before more chunky ones."

She flinched and Lochlann pulled his hand back quickly, mumbling an embarrassed 'sorry' and tucking it back into his pocket. He'd forgotten about the awkwardness for a moment.

"What about...soft pretzels?" Lochlann asked after a moment, and because he could smell the heavenly aroma of freshly baking bread wafting towards him. That was always something he'd wanted to learn how to do.

"So when do you plan to make barbecues?"

"Depends," he said. "When would you like me to? What what would you like me to make? I'm better with pork than chicken. I can make a really good rack of ribs. Actually, there's this one place I'm looking at that has a yard, sort of. I really want to get it because it means I could make a barbeque pit in the back. Before I got expelled, I had this awesome home ec teacher who came over to help my dad build a pit in the yard. What the hell was her name?"

He trailed off, lost in his memories for a second, and then sighed.

"But...yeah, let me know," he said.

"Soft pretzels..?"

The smell of bread was in the air and Adelene sniffed it in for a moment, wondering where it was coming from. Lochlann had flinched when she did, but she tried not to make things awkward again. Well, tried. "That sounds nice. Let's look for it."

She held his arm and tried to lead the way, and of course she listened to Lochlann at the same time. A few thoughts swirled in her head, just like how it wasn't so shocking anymore to hear that Lochlann's expelled from school before. And then her thoughts went to the barbecue, and she'd start to imagine how it would be like once Lochlann makes them and they would enjoy having lunch together in his new place and then... And then a horrible feeling went to her guts, because she remembered Lochlann might not be alone in his unit anymore and if that's the case, she didn't really want to visit. She was only going to feel bad if she tries.

She doesn't know she's jealous. She never does.

"Uh..." an awkward laugh escaped her. She looked away. How was she going to answer that? "I think... it's a better idea if you tell me when I can drop by. I mean... Well... I don't want to inconvenience you and your roommate. I don't really like her... I'd rather not see her ever."

"Soft pretzels..?"

Lochlann shot her a surprised glance.

"You say soft pretzels like you have never had one before. Please tell me that I am merely misinterpreting and tonight is not the night I take your soft-pretzel-virginity," Lochlann said. He was completely fixated on finding the soft pretzels now, and he didn't seem to realize that his comment might be a little, well, crass.

"That sounds nice. Let's look for it."

He followed her through the crowd and when he finally found the pretzel stand, he gave a soft whoop of delight and pulled her in line. "I'll get this one, since you got those delicious chips."

"Uh..." "I think... it's a better idea if you tell me when I can drop by. I mean... Well... I don't want to inconvenience you and your roommate. I don't really like her... I'd rather not see her ever."

He misinterpreted her awkward laugh as still being part of the overall awkwardness, but her follow up comment made him pause.

"That's okay," Lochlann said. "I won't try and force you two to be friends or anything. Vlad is sort of stuck here because of me so we might end up splitting a place for a bit yet, but I don't think it's going to be permanent. "

He decided not to mention that Vlad knew about what he was. It didn't seem fair that he hadn't told his best friend and a near stranger knew, but then again, Vlad knew specifically because he'd summoned her for the purpose of intense sex without the risk of accidental manslaughter.

"Thank you for telling me, though," Lochlann said, giving a laugh. "It would have been really awkward if I didn't know and I had you two sit together during dinner or something."

A man walked by with one of the pretzlens. it was huge. Seeing it's size, Lochlann said, "Do you just want to split one?"

"Is it that bad that I haven't tried it yet?"

Adelene did her best not to mind how Lochlann said it. He didn't seem to notice it either anyway. When he spoke about Vlad, she nodded, not saying anything either because well, she might say something that wasn't so good to hear.

When the man with the giant pretzel, Adelene felt some sort of hesitation. The stall was just a few feet away from them, and she was all of a side unsure if she could eat this. "Is it good..? We can share if it's good... Uh... yeah, I'm foreign to pretzels..."

"Is it that bad that I haven't tried it yet?"

"Yes," Lochlann said. "It's an offense so great that I am surprised that a god, if they exist, has not struck you down right where you stand."

He grinned and bumped into her shoulder, trying so hard to have things be normal but...he was starting to get scared. Lochlann wasn't showing it, but inside, he was a bundle of anxiety. He just wanted her.

Everything was so complicated and messy.

"Is it good..? We can share if it's good... Uh... yeah, I'm foreign to pretzels..."

"It's good," he assured her. He decided to order something without dipping sauce since it'd be messy, so he just got a plain cinnamon sugar pretzel.

Loch hesitated, and then wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her to his side and giving her a gentle squeeze. He didn't hold her though. He was too worried. He handed her the pretzel.

"Sometimes they'll serve these with icing, when they're like this. What do you think? Where too next?

Adelene rolled her eyes away for the second time tonight. But she was grinning at Lochlann's joke before he bumped their shoulders. It was pretty awkward though, in a different way, because of their height difference that Addy's already learned to acknowledge.

She eyed the pretzel when Lochlann bought it. She didn't notice immediately that he pulled her closer. She felt the squeeze, and for some reason, it spread some kind of warmth towards her whole chest. She looked at him and gave a faint smile before taking the bread. "Cinnamon, right? I don't eat cinnamon breads often but I tried them once in Leon's place."

She wasn't done with her potato chips so she held on to it while she was finishing them.

"You think we'll get to eat lots tonight? Because I think I want that brisket sandwich and I think my stomach is too small to have more than that and these."

She kept close, hoping it would get through to Lochlann that she wanted him, too; she wanted him close to her.

"Cinnamon, right? I don't eat cinnamon breads often but I tried them once in Leon's place."

"It's good though, try it, it's not quite as sweet as you are, but it tries to come close," Lochlann said. Some people were compulsive liars, other people were compulsive worriers, but Lochlann was a compulsive flirter.

The more stressed he was, the sweeter he was getting. It didn't help that he meant every word.

"You think we'll get to eat lots tonight? Because I think I want that brisket sandwich and I think my stomach is too small to have more than that and these."

"Angel, you were the one that wanted to eat something soft before we moved onto the big stuff, " Lochlann said, laughing. "We can get brisket now and then eat it on the roof. Does that work for you?"

He was normally so, so good with body language, but with Addy, Lochlann was second guessing everything. He had the nervous demeanor of someone on a first date with a girl he really really liked. He kept doing things to be affectionate, but he was afraid to go too far.

"Ohoho, that's a good one." Adelene snickered. She found this one amusing, the way Lochlann described the soft pretzel, and the way she eased up because it seemed to have kicked the awkwardness away. She even reached up and pinched Lochlann's cheek jokingly.

Although at the back of her mind, it made her feel guilty.

"I'm not very sweet myself, you know. I mean... what kind of sweet person would... uh..."

Would leave her best friend alone in the hospital?

She cleared her throat. The image of Lochlann being intubated, the way his eyes shut close in fear as she tied his hands and held them, it all went back to her easily. She swallowed, letting the bad memories and feelings sit in the pit of her stomach.

She was silent again for a moment, looking straight in front of her as they walked. A small, less happy smile on her face. "I'm sorry, Loch. I know you probably don't want to remember that moment but... I'm sorry I left you in the hospital. I visited the next day, you know. But they won't let me see you. I was so worried..." A sheepish laugh. "And then Dr. Hart tried to distract me for a bit... But I kept thinking about you."

She cleared her throat again.

"A-Anyway... Uh, yeah, brisket... Brisket brisket brisket brisket brisket..."

Absentmindedly, she looked around and took a small piece for the soft pretzel, eating it carefully. It did taste good. It was sweeter than the cinnamon rolls in Leon's bake shop, but it was appealing that way.

Ohoho, that's a good one."

He gave her a quick grin followed by a slightly-disgruntled “ahhh” as she pinched his cheek, but Lochlann was happy, because the action was very Addy, and if she was doing that, things must be okay. He reached out and took a small piece of the pretzel, munching on it. Some of the tension seemed to ease its way out of his shoulders.

"I'm not very sweet myself, you know. I mean... what kind of sweet person would... uh..."

Lochlann did not know what she was going to say. At first, he was self-centered enough to think she was talking about him and the horrible things he’d done in his past. But then she cleared her throat and looked dead ahead, and Lochlann lowered his eyes, too, when she brought up the incident or the accident or whatever it was he’d decided to think of it as.

”Oh, Addy,” Lochlann said, and his voice sounded sad. He put his arm around her and pulled her close to his side. ”Please never apologize for that. I’m so sorry I put you in that horrible position. I never meant for you to see me like that.”

He swallowed. ”They assigned me a new doctor. Dr.Azeria, or something like that. She had me in for testing all day, she was worried about—“

Lochlann cut off. What the hell was he doing?

He shook his head.

”It’s all over now. I’m so sorry, Addy.”

He was happy when she changed the subject to brisket. Lochlann’s eyes lit up and he searched for it with her.

”Maybe I should put you up on my shoulders,” Lochlann mused. They’d probably be able to see over the crowds for the brisket stand.

Addy didn't dare push the sad topic further. Thinking about it was already stressful for her, pretty surely Lochlann had it worse. She just hoped he won't have to go back to the hospital again, unlike what Dr. Hart predicted.

Instead, she focused on looking for the brisket. There were so many people and most of them are taller than her, so it was pretty difficult to see the stalls more than 5 meters away from her. She grunted in frustration. It was almost too tempting for her to say yes at Lochlann's offer but...

"You're already pretty tall on your own, Loch. You don't need me on your shoulders," she said, glancing at him. Honestly though, her only issue was her being embarrassed about the thought. "Or do you? Can't you see the other stalls from there?"
