She kept holding his hand and Lochlann started to relax a little. It didn't clear the awkwardness completely, but it did make things better.

"C-College?"

She smiled and Lochlann smiled back instantly.

"Yeah, I uh, talked to my dad the other day," Lochlann admitted. "I'm not allowed to come back yet and since the school will take me, he wants me to stay."

"What are you taking? Let me guess, it's related to literature, isn't it?" she chuckled.

Here, Lochlann's smile faltered, but his expression turned thoughtful instead.

"I don't know," Lochlann said. "I...I guess I'll have to take something agricultural related. I'm only here because Lawrence can hold out as long as I can, and Lillianna is too young."

He shook his head, changing his thoughts. "I haven't seen my siblings in so long."

"I was thinking we could go try the stalls in the street since I... I haven't really tried having fun in a summer festival before. But the roof is okay too, we'll get to see everything from up there, right?"

"Yeah," Lochlann said, perking up again. "We can go through the streets and maybe we can watch the fireworks from that bookstore? That has a pretty good view, I don't think anyone else will be up there, either. Sound okay?

Adelene shrugged, her smile remained. "Agriculture, huh...? That sounds good too." Adelene didn't know much about Lochlann's siblings, but she remembered the fun fact about his little sister painting his nails hot pink once. The thought made her chuckle, but at the same time, being reminded of their drinking contest stirred back unwanted feelings in her stomach. She shrugged off those bad ones though.

"Seriously though, being a literature prof would suit you." Little by little, her smile became wider, more at ease, less tensed, more cheerful. Because thinking of Lochlann having a wonderful future after college made her happy, and imagining him becoming a cool college literature professor was funny. All the girls would love him! "I could imagine you reciting Romeo lines with feelings in class and your students would melt listening to you. Hehe... But agriculture sounds more practical, I guess."

She stood up, and since she wasn't letting Lochlann's hand go, she tugged at him at the same time to do the same. "Come on, let's look around while the sun's still up. Bookstore roof sounds like a good idea after that."

She was still slightly uneasy, but she pushed that to the back of her mind because she didn't want any more awkward tension around them.

Lochlann titled his head in his hand. His dark eyebrows were furled, musing what she said. That did sound like it’d be something he’d enjoy, but he had a really hard time thinking of his future. He supposed he never considered what could happen, only what was happening right now.

He had also never considered that it was okay to want something. Everything he wanted was usually bad in some form or another. Right now, all he wanted was her.

She stood up and he was grateful that she didn’t let go of his hand. He let her tug pull him to his feet and he grabbed his paper and wallet and shoved it in his back pocket.

. "Come on, let's look around while the sun's still up. Bookstore roof sounds like a good idea after that."

He didn’t let go of her hand and he moved just a smidge closer to her as she walked, letting some of the distance between them disappear. The thoughtful expression was still on his face; she’d given him a lot to consider.
”Do you want to get something to eat?” Lochlann said. ”There are so many food stands. I couldn’t decide what to get.”

Being a little closer to Lochlann as they walk always did make Adelene comfortable. Holding his hand always made her feel secured. But at the moment, those good feelings were mixed with the paranoia in her that refused to disappear.

"Food sounds good." Honestly though, she hasn't eaten anything since yesterday. She's been too stressed and tired to get up from bed. And instead of her Lamby plushy, which reminded her of Lochlann constantly, she's been using the teddy bear from Stefan as a cuddle buddy. The day before yesterday, the only thing she'd eaten was the cinnamon bun from Leon's family shop. She was hungry, and the smell of food everywhere made her stomach growl; thankfully it wasn't loud enough for anyone else to hear. She wasn't going to tell Lochlann about any of that though.

"I want meat. Like roasted meat. Or barbecue..." She paused, thinking maybe those were bad options if her stomach was too empty. "...Or maybe softer food like bread."

She looked around when they got out, because even there in front of the café stalls already filled the streets. The place was so cheerful and celebrating, it was such a familiar air. Before she went to the island, she was stuck in the middle of a festival, too, and back then, she was the only one with a sad face on. She really didn't want this one to be similar to that.

She took a deep breath in and released a heavy one, at the same time letting go of the heaviness in her chest. She smiled up at Lochlann, before she led the way into the crowd and to the food stalls. "Let's try at least ten food stalls, Loch. You too, it'll be lonely if I eat alone."

"Food sounds good."

”It does,” Lochlann agreed, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. He was having a hard time staying in the moment—the touch of their hands, her mannerisms, and the occasional glance into her eyes would send him back to that night. But still, he was getting hopeful again. He didn’t want to believe he’d broken this beyond repair. He couldn’t believe that.

"I want meat. Like roasted meat. Or barbecue..." She paused, thinking maybe those were bad options if her stomach was too empty. "...Or maybe softer food like bread."

”Brisket sandwich on a bun,” Lochlann said, automatically. ”It should satisfy all of those things. Or we can just ask for samples and keep trying things until we’re stuffed.”

He was looking for a barbeque stand as they walked, and his face had started to twist into a frown now, too. He seemed absentminded and distracted. He’d gotten jumped one night after getting barbeque with his then-girlfriend. At the time, that’d seemed horrible. Now, it seemed almost pleasant in comparison to what had happened after the accident. He hoped maybe this time barbeque would be a pleasant memory.

Her sigh prompted her to do the same and he returned her smile.

"Let's try at least ten food stalls, Loch. You too, it'll be lonely if I eat alone."

”Watching cute girls eat happens to be one of my favorite activities,” Lochlann said, and it was hard to tell if he was joking or not, but he smiled either way. ”Lead the way, Angel.”

Adelene noticed that frown, and she cannot really help but worry about it. But when it didn't seem too important at the moment, she decided to let it go, and pull Lochlann to the first stall that caught her attention. It was a stand selling all kinds of potato snacks, from chips to fries to mashed potatoes served in small cups.

She looked up at him after a moment, pouting a little as she felt familiar heat creep up to her cheeks. "Who are you calling cute?" Though embarrassed, she was happy it felt like her usual reaction. She rolled her eyes away, though it wasn't in a hateful way, and she turned to the vendor to buy two orders of potato chips and soda. She paid for them and practically shoved Lochlann's share to his chest.

"You're gonna eat, too," she insisted. It would be embarrassing if he wouldn't, after what he said. "We'll look for brisket sandwich later... but... no hurries."

The sun was already setting and the streets were starting to be lit with lanterns and lights instead. The sky's become purple, and the stars were beginning to show up. It was a good evening.

"Who are you calling cute?"

”You, angel. You give lamby a run for his money. Although, I suppose sheep don’t really have any money.”
He bumped into her shoulder with his own, giving a little bit of a laugh, and then followed her to the potato place. He was going to offer to pay, but Addy beat him to it, and he laughed and thanked her for the snack. He tucked the soda bottle into his pocket, happy for once that he wore such baggy jeans.

You're gonna eat, too," she insisted. It would be embarrassing if he wouldn't, after what he said. "We'll look for brisket sandwich later... but... no hurries."

”Mhmmm,” Lochlann agreed, already munching on a chip. ”Holy seahorses these are good.”
The nighttime atmosphere was starting to relax Lochlann even more. The awkwardness was probably still there, but without the harsh light of day, it seemed less pressing, less intense.

”….have I ever cooked for you, Addy?” Lochlann asked suddenly. ”I can make a hell of a barbeque.”

As a sort of defense mechanism, Adelene looked away and focused on eating her potato chips because He'll no, she wasn't cute. The thought of Lamby made her laugh though. She really did miss the adorable sheep.

She was looking around before Lochlann caught her attention once more, and she turned to him, shaking her head once. "I didn't know you can cook." There was a really faint smirk on her face. "I never saw you cook, and there's that time when I was sick and you even had to buy the chicken soup from that burger joint," she teased. She wasn't one to talk though, she didn't cook that much either, and after finding a really awesome chef in her dear friend Leon, she somewhat thought there was no use trying to get better because she wouldn't exceed that much talent ever.

She munched a few more chips and sipped from her soda, looking around again for more interesting food stalls, before letting out a thoughtful hum. "I really want barbecues though... I just... I think my stomach won't be able to take it now..." She sighed.

”Well, it depends on what it is,” Lochlann said. ”I don’t get sick, so I’ve never had to make barbeque. Most of the stuff I grew up eating was…..well it didn’t require cooking, let’s just leave it at that. But I do make a few things, and a mean barbeque happens to be one of them.”

When she mentioned that she didn’t think her stomach could handle it, Lochlann stopped, sort of spinning her with his motion so his free hand was resting on her stomach.

”Are you ill?” he asked, concern plain on his face. He wasn’t sure what she was up to the last few days, but he felt terrible thinking she’d been sick and he’d missed it because he’d been, well, out of commission. ”We don’t have to stay for fireworks if you’re ill, I can just walk you home so you can sleep it off and feel better.”

That was a mistake. It just slipped, she wasn't supposed to say it out loud.

Adelene flinched when Lochlann put a hand on her stomach, and she tried to pull away as she shook her head. "No, no, no, not sick! I'm fine, just... uh... really hungry so... I need to fill my stomach with soft food first before more chunky ones."

She wasn't going to tell him she hadn't eaten the whole day yesterday, she made sure of that. She ate a few more chips, letting silence take over while she made only one noise that was the sound of chips being chewed.

After a few minutes, she was able to look at Lochlann again. "So when do you plan to make barbecues?"
