He'd been looking for some kind of reaction, and while he couldn't quite place what it was that was different visually there was definitely more damage being dealt to the rock. He pocketed the coin and retrieved a small, cheap first aid kit from the depths of his jacket and began to wrap gauze around his knuckles as he jumped his line of questioning away from the apparently stressful topic.

"Well, as I said it shows. I've no doubt you could win fighting tournaments if you really wished. I envy your strength."

Murphy waited for her to continue, though it quickly became apparent she wasn't going to. It was also curious that she allowed so many questions and yet offered none in return. Perhaps he was being vain, he wasn't that interesting himself after all. Leaving it for the time being he stood back up and tightened the improvised fist wraps and began matching Milk's rhythm again.

It was the silence that eventually got Murphy talking again. In any other forest there would be the chirping of birds or the rustling of bushes all around them, here there was only the steady thud thud thud of fist against stone. "What made you... mmf... want to....compete?" he asked conversationally, trying to keep his stance steady. Fuck it was hard, how did she make it look so easy?

Milk paused at Murphy's question, her fist stopping an inch from the boulder. She swiveled her head slightly to look at Murphy, a curious gleam in her eye. "What made me want to compete. In fighting? Is that the question?" She asked, her normal monotone seeming to hang in the air. The forbidden forest's normal sounds of wildlife seeming to silence at the fighters question.

When Milk paused, Murphy did to to listen. "Well, yeah. What made you want to compete in fighting against others? Does it run in your family?" Visions of Milk being trained by her father or mother ran through his head, a tinier version of the woman doing the exact same training he was now. "I mean, it's not like anyone forced you into it, yeah?"

Oh Murphy. Oh no. That was a horrible thing to ask. Milk's eye twitched, and she started to punch the rock with more fervor. Her arms were starting to shift more, nubs popping up and smoothing out around her wrappings. She wasn't looking at Murphy anymore, more focused on the rock, but he could see the embers of the fire in her eyes.

"I did not ever get the pleasure of meeting my parents. I was and am still an orphan. I learned to fight to protect myself."

Her monotone had the hint of anger in it. Murphy better watch himself.

The increase in tempo threw Murphy's timing off and he stopped himself to readjust, glance over at Milk, then go very very still. His mind raced and finally began to make connections. She had no family, reacted poorly to weapons, and was ready to kill when he joked about being forced into fighting. Oh... oh shit... ohshitohshitohshitohshit. He thought about apologizing immediately, but a glimpse of her eyes was all he needed to throw that idea right out. For the first time in a very long time he felt his heart pounding hard enough to almost bruise his chest, and the fear for his own life came soaring to the front of his thoughts.

He stepped back from the rock, and moved several feet away. If she decided to attack him there wasn't a thing in the world that he could, or would do to stop her. Worst part was, this wasn't even his ability at work, just his own fucking incompetence.

Milk was silent now, her punches growing faster and stronger, entire chunks of the rock falling off as she punched. The bubbling of her skin was more noticeable now, traveling up her arms. Something was writhing about under her skin, going up and down and shifting about. The fighter didn't seem to notice Murphy stepping back, focused on thrashing the rock to pieces.

Murphy was now acutely aware of another sound in the forest, in addition the the cracking of rocks. The thunder of something getting close, heavy footsteps. Hmmm.....
