Nicolas was starting to get a suspicion. The suspicion wasn't really that far from the truth, and he settled his gaze on Ulrich, considering for only a moment how to word it.

"And I'm betting you have a bunch of children running around." Why else would he seem so curious? Why else bring the topic up at all? And the way he talked about kids being irritating - he'd definitely been exposed to kids recently, whether they were his own or someone elses. Considering how 'free love' the entire species seemed to be, he couldn't rule out the possibility of there being a few hundred mini-Ulrichs running around.

That was an alarming thought.

Ulrich, upon hearing his inquiry, seemed to consider it for a moment. He had one child that he actually acknowledged, because not doing so could mean political doom. He probably had a few others, if he was being completely honest with himself. Of course, no half breeds.

Human and Panthalassian DNA were not at all compatible, even though he had a humanoid form. He had his fun with humans in the past, sure, but he knew none of them resulted in children. Affairs with his own kind were different, but nothing had come out of the woodwork at all.

In the end, he shook his head. "Not quite..."

Nicolas squinted towards Ulrich. The pause was ominous. It really couldn't mean anything good. Were there dozens of tiny Ulrich's? Who knew, maybe they bred like salmon and there were really hundreds of them.

"Not quite is a fancy way of saying 'yes, but'. So out with it. Should I be worrying about a swarm of tiny Panthalassian's storming the shores?" God, he sure as hell hoped not. "And for the record, if you are, don't admit that to anyone but me, because it's considered a really bad thing in human society to have kids you aren't involved with."

Ulrich shook his head again. "No need to worry about that. It won't be happening." A pause. "I mean, a squadron of Panthalassians might storm the shores despite the contract I have, but they won't be my children." At least, he wouldn't know if they were. Too many technicalities.

"There are plenty of things you humans consider 'bad' that are perfectly natural. I'm beginning to think it isn't me who has the problem." But since he was to integrate into human society for a while, he'd have to do what they did. Augh, how bothersome.

Nicolas resisted the urge to sigh loudly. "We also don't murder each other. We don't demolish ships. Lots of lovely things about being a human that you're all missing out on." He wasdefinitely still salty about the whole 'destroying the ship and nearly killing him' thing."And you still didn't answer my question - I was being rhetorical about the swarm of tiny Ulrich's flooding the shores." He snipped.

He glanced down, finally realizing what time it was.

"You should come inside and eat." God knew, he was probably going to have to cook, wasn't he?

There was little point in informing Nicolas about Luca and Emma. He would likely never meet them and he didn't need to guard them directly, so what was the point? All he needed to know about was the war and the politics and the potential dangers that the sea might dredge up.

"Are you sure we must go inside? I could easily catch you a fish out here." He chuckled though and braced his palms against the deck, dragging himself up and out of the water. Naked and dripping. He didn't even bother to wring out his hair.

"Let's see this human cooking of yours."

Goddamn, what was with Ulrich and nakedness? He seemed to take any excuse he could get to run around naked. It hadn't bothered him half as much as the first time, but after all those lovely probing questions about things that weren't suitable for human ears, Nicolas made a point of averting his eyes as Ulrich got out, his face turning pink again.

"For the record, going around naked in public - such as a place you'd be visible from the beach - is a crime. Public indecency. So unless you want to get arrested, put some damn clothes on." How long was he going to last before he slipped up and Ulrich got arrested? Was he going to even be able to get him out of jail? Did the islands recognize diplomatic immunity for the freaking sea?

Ulrich sincerely didn't think that he'd grow embarrassed of being naked any time soon. Especially if Nicolas kept reacting like a blushing virgin every time, he supposed he could find more reasons to accidentally or purposefully lose his clothes.

"Is that a crime for humans, too?" Jeez, they were all such prudes. Did they all have sex with a sheet between them, too? Whatever, he was quick to run his fingers through his hair and stroke it back so it looked vaguely presentable before he brushed past Nicolas and into the house.

He didn't immediately go to get dressed, though. Hey, if he wasn't visible to the humans on the beach, he could take his time.

Nicolas was trying to tell himself that it was a cultural thing. Of course they wouldn't wear clothes underwater, so it would be strange to adapt to life on land. But at the same time, he couldn't quite bring himself to actually believe that. Ulrich had shown himself to be perfectly capable of adapting to human life. He'd learned to walk, but he couldn't figure out how to put pants on? No, Nicolas was pretty sure that Ulrich was purposefully not putting clothes on just to annoy him.

He could work with that. If he was going to play dumb, Nicolas was going to act like he was dumb. "You should put on clothes and practice wearing them, since you seem to have trouble with it. If you look awkward or uncomfortable in them, it'll make people suspicious about how human you are." He protested, for the most part unaware of just how non-human the island was. In truth, no one would bat an eyelash at a non-human at all.

Nicolas' assumptions were partially true. He was, indeed, perfectly capable of putting a pair of pants on. At the same time, he absolutely abhorred the feeling of clothes. The fabric was constantly touching his skin, the elastics dug in and it just felt so restricting. For someone who was used to being utterly free in ever dimension for most of his life, he hated feeling like he was constantly being touched and held by fabric, of all things.

So, when he could get away with it, he went without. This included his own house.

"I don't understand how you humans tolerate it. How do you cope with feeling like you're constantly being held?" Or, with turtlenecks, constantly being choked by a very weak person.

Ulrich took a seat at the kitchen table, looking oddly majestic for someone who was naked.
