Nicolas let out a little huff at 'missing out'."And you're missing out on plenty. Like cooking. You can't cook anything underwater, which means you've missed out on the entire idea of cuisine. Every part of the world has it's own types of food, and they all taste differently." Knowing Ulrich, he'd like expensive sashimi and nothing else.

"And for the record, plenty of us can fight. We can't fight against monsters like you, but we're still the dominant species on land." Well, some animals could certainly give them a run for it, but overall, they still stood on top. They had guns and missiles and god knew what else, and no amount of tooth and claw was going to change that.

Ulrich's stoic face broke for a bare moment, a slightly mischievous smile spreading across his lips as he tilted his head back to look at the still standing Nicolas. "Then show me your human cooking, and I'll show you a Panthalassian's basic desires." There were plenty and, despite having been indirectly responsible for the loss of Nicolas' arm, he'd be more than willing to make up for it.

He'd make good on that offer.

Though mildly irritating, he didn't take too much offense to Nicolas calling him and his kind monsters. For generations, since the dawn of humans, they've always whispered and huddled in fear of what lived in the deep. Even with their modern technology, they often mistook his body as the sea bed. The beasts of the water were quick, and they generally stayed out of view no matter how deeply humans probed.

But now he was wondering something else, and it might have been applicable. "How do humans deal with your offspring?"

There weren't exactly a lot of ways one could interpret Ulrich's offer, and basically all of them were horribly inappropriate. Miklos went pink in the face, spluttering and looking away. He wasn't going to look at him. He refused to. He wasn't going to meet his eyes, as if looking away would somehow hide the fact that he was so embarrassed by the idea that the tips of his ears had gone pink.

"That is... don't do that either. If you said that to someone on the street you might get arrested." Or taken up on the offer - Nicolas wasn't sure which was worse. Either one would be a huge pain for him.

At the very least Ulrich was asking questions, which were a thousand times easier to deal with than having to try and guess what seamonsters did and didn't know.

"In case you're not aware, our offspring come from having sex. You know, just in case you guys have offspring via... I don't know, ritual egg laying or something." God knows how they reproduced - he didn't want to think about it."Generally they're raised at home by their parents, and then start going to school part time when they're five or six. They'll generally move out by the time they're twenty." That was as rough a guideline as he could give, after all."Strong focus on family units."

Ah, so Nicolas was one of those prudent humans, then? What a pity. Would that stop Ulrich from poking and prodding every once in a while? Absolutely not. Panthalassian culture was a whole lot more open when it came to sex and that wasn't going to be driven out of him so readily.

Not to mention that his reaction was obviously amusing, too. He reached back casually, hooking a finger under the hem of Nicolas' pants and giving it a light, playful tug as if trying to pull him closer.

"Then how am I supposed to propose sex? Or is it one of those things that must be done in private?" Now he was asking just to see how red Nicolas would go. Red as his hair, perhaps.

Human age guides were a little odd to him, but he figured he'd learn it eventually. It sounded like they were kicking their children away from them while they were infants, but apparently twenty years old was quite mature for humans.

"So are humans raised by both parents on a regular basis? And what would happen if they were raised by only one?" It had become an unfortunately regular occurrence among Panthalassians; the wars had killed many and broken up what would be considered family 'units'. There wasn't as much of an emphasis on keeping together as humans apparently did.

Nicolas smacked Ulrich's hand away the way you'd smack a child's hand that was going for the cookie jar, still red in the face, even if it was tinged with even more annoyance.

"You shouldn't. If you can't keep it in your pants up here, go... I don't know, bang a sea monster part time. It's better for everyone if you don't bring any humans into your sea monster drama." He didn't even know the details of what the drama was, but he knew it was better no humans got involved.

"Normally both parents. If you're raised only by one, lots of people say that's bad, but it's not really a big deal. Single parents are seen to have it harder than two parents, because then you have to figure out how to watch kids while also working. It's a pain in the ass, basically." At least that was a subject that wasn't horribly embarrassing.

Perhaps he'd just found a new hobby. Nicolas was amusing when he became flustered, or maybe Ulrich just liked to see that stern demeanor crack open.

"How about you, hm? You're already part of the drama, so to speak." He let his hand be brushed away, turning so he could rest his chin on his arms on the wood. Nicolas was currently firmly in the "I'm not looking for a relationship, but I'd fuck you if you asked" category. Why did humans have to make it so complicated? It was easy!

As for the parents thing, he made a pensive 'hm' sound, eyes focused on nothing in particular. "Raising a child seems quite difficult on land." Panthalassians took a much looser approach to rearing their young... Unless it was the case of the heir.

If Nicolas had been drinking, he'd have choked on it six or seven times by then. He shot Ulrich a glare which was undermined by the pinkness of his ear. "I have a strict no fucking coworkers policy. It makes things messy. You'll note that any sensible human has the samepolicy, and often you'd get in trouble at work if you did anything with a manager." Never mind the half dozen other reasons, but it was better to pick onereason, and use it to fend Ulrich off.

"I assume you just hatch them and kick them out into the ocean. You have a lot longer to fuck up though - humans don't live as long, so if you have a shitty childhood it can affect you for years to come." Plus, human children were effectively defenseless. You couldn't just leave them on their own.

Whether Ulrich consciously decided or not, his mind was basically made up; he'd have Nicolas, one way or another. Probably not soon because he seemed like such an uptight sort of human, but eventually.

But for the time being, he'd leave it. There were some important matters to attend first, before he went about bending his bodyguards over desks.

Ulrich made an exasperated sound. "You make us sound so crude, you know." Panthalassians were older than humans; they had a semblance of a 'civilized society', as humans liked to put it. Hell, to them, humans were quite archaic in some ways. Why hadn't they learned how to change their forms yet?

"We care for our children, but not quite in the same way. We don't coddle them quite as much as you humans do."

Nicolas, rather obviously, did not have kids. He hadn't really been exposed to kids either, but he at least knew in a general sense how raising kids were supposed to go. Generally. Mostly from a high school science class years ago.

"No, I mean... I don't know if you guys hatch out of eggs or something, but we're literally defenseless as children. We're born way too early compared to other animals, because if we aren't our brains get too big. Giant heads, tiny bodies if you've ever seen a baby. So we're defenseless for a few years while our bodies have to play catchup." Which was why babies were so dang useless, and took so much time and energy to grow. It was ineffective from the perspective of an animal, but for humans... well, the alternative was worse.

Panthalassian babies came in a whole variety of shapes, though they were admittedly bigger than human babies, certainly. When they were born, they weren't completely helpless and some were actually pretty ready to snap at the nearest fin or finger. Panthalassians were born with genetic memory, something that came in handy when fighting family feuds.

"I haven't seen too many, no." Perhaps one in what was a single book about a hundred years ago. It wasn't as if human babies populated parties, nor did they dive to the bottom of the sea. His mental picture of a human baby was akin to what humans thought of when one said 'alien', without the green skin.

"Nor do I really want to, actually. Children in on themselves are usually irritating no matter the species." Except he had one, and that was why he was here.
