Was he going to be dropped back in France, or was he going to be left to stay here?

"You're here for a treaty, doing... whatever. Do we have any... goals? Or just what?" What were they there for? Or were they just biding time, running in circles until something happened?

How long? Ulrich had to think about that one for a little... In terms of human years, he could imagine that it wasn't too long. Then again, his concept of time was relative compared to theirs.

"I have certain goals, but you don't need to accompany me in them." He had to raise Luca from afar... Sort of. Until they figured the political situation out. Until Luca grew old enough to make some decisions. Until...

Well, he didn't like not knowing.

"As for the amount of time, it also depends. To a human, it might seem like quite a while. A few years at minimum." At most, Ulrich would have to find a new guard. Humans were only good at this guarding stuff until they were, what, forty or fifty?

Really he shouldn't have, because there was nothing in 'you will be here for years' that was comforting. Maybe it was simply the fact that it was an answer, even if a vague one. It was a general idea. He'd take anything, considering that getting even the most simple answer was like pulling teeth.

"See? That wasn't so hard. And as long as you keep paying me, I'm willing to keep sitting on this bizarre island for as long as you damn well want me to." Although he was wondering if he'd be able to even buy stuff with literal gold treasure. What was the exchange rate on that stuff anyway?

"Not Like I have anything better to do." It wasn't much of a secret that his life had crashed and burned.

Ulrich sighed again, sounding a bit exasperated. Nicolas did need to know some things, but not at all the full extent of the reasons he was here. He didn't need to know about what happened with Emma, or that Luca existed, or the hush hush of the political turmoil, or...

The king glanced up at Ulrich, cocking his head slightly to the side. "I hear from my guards that you came across some very difficult times after your time with the French Legion." More like a rapid downward spiral, things getting worse and worse for him until he was utterly poverty stricken.

The reason he was able to recapture him, after all, was because Nicolas was looking for something better.

"I imagine, after your work for me, that you'll be able to retire quite comfortably."

He didn't want to talk with the monster that had nearly cost him his life about the consequences of what he'd done. He didn't want to explain what it was like to be homeless to a creature that barely understood the concept of a home. It wasn't like they had undersea palaces where he could live - probably he just considered the whole damn ocean his home.

"Yeah, not sure if you're aware, but the military doesn't exactly have a lot of uses for guys who can't shoot a fucking rifle." He wiggled his shoulder to emphasize his missing arm. He could still manage a handgun, although not as effectively as he would have with two arms, but rifles were essentially right out. They'd provided for him in their own way, but what they had left him without was a purpose. He had no place in the world anymore.

"Kind of hard to make do when the majority of your skillset is how to use your two arms to protect people, and then you're suddenly down an arm." What? No, he wasn't bitter at all.

It was rather true; Ulrich wasn't exactly empathetic to the idea of homelessness. He was a king, and would be a king for long after Nicolas grew old and died. He was raised royally and given a vast domain in which he ruled, an undersea palace in which he called home and throngs of followers that had nothing but the utmost reverence for him.

He never knew, and would likely never know, what it was like to be looked down upon.

For Ulrich, he thought Nicolas' main concern was being unable to support himself into old age, as humans tended to do. Something called 'retirement'.

"You will be cared for past your prime. After all, I will very likely outlive you." Most likely. Basically beyond a doubt, if the war wasn't going on. There was always a chance of being killed through that. "So there is no need to worry."

What Ulrich didn't understand was the missing sense of purpose, or belonging.

He wasn't thinking that far ahead. He scowled again, letting out a little huff. "I'm not worried about that." Realistically, he wasn't even entirely clear what he was worried about. It was just a general thing. He didn't like not knowing what was going on. There was no specific cause of his anxiety.

"So I suppose it's time to start giving you lessons on basic human interaction - even if this island is totally cool with weird non-humans running around, it's still going to be a faux pas to rub in that you'll outlive us, for the record." That was pretty much a universal human constant, wasn't it? Humans were nervous about the idea of death. No one wanted to think about it. It was all too uncertain. No one knew what happened after, and there was nothing humans hated more than the great unknown.

Ulrich's attention went back to the slow rippling tides and the gentle breeze that seemed to be persistently present. Though it looked serene, he knew the sea would never be quite safe... Not until this war was over and he and Emma sorted out whatever there was that needed to be. It would be a while, yet.

"Is it?" He didn't take his eyes away from the horizon, but he nodded anyways. Very well. He wouldn't speak of his age, though he was quite old and that was what the old ones tended to do.

"Would there be anything else of vital importance?" Something that was immediate, like if it was considered extremely rude to look anyone in the eye or offer them raw fish or something.

"And, considering you wanted to learn a thing or two about us, I'll be getting my guards to fetch a book or two."

Well, at least Ulrich was taking it alright, and he took a long moment to consider the half million things he probably knew nothing about. It was, to say the least, a big list. A very big list. Sure, Ulrich might know someof them, but how much did he really know about people?

"People tend to wear clothing. In fact, they basically always wear clothing. Being seen in too little clothing is considered rude or perverted. Same thing with sex - you're supposed to have sex with someone you love, who agrees to it, and not anyone else. You aren't supposed to take things that aren't yours, even if you are royalty. We use... specific pieces of paper or plastic to pay for things. Uh..." He trailed off for a moment. "Did I mention we don't fight often?"

The clothing thing sounded outright counterproductive to him. It was currently warm out; why wear clothing? Right, human skin was soft and vulnerable to burning from the sun. Ah, but clothing was such a terrible, inconvenient thing. Which, he supposed, brought Nicolas to his second point on sex. A very condensed version of it, at any rate.

Ulrich nearly rolled his eyes.

"A pity, really. Humans are certainly missing out." He stretched a little, feeling something brushing against the soles of his feet. His guard always kept a close eye on the house; technically, floating on the water, it remained part of his domain.

"I think you may have. Humans are much too flimsy to hold up against much fighting." Humans had this tendency to be afraid of harm to themselves. Panthalassians, at least the majority, went headlong with reckless abandon. It certainly explained why so many of them died, and if they survived, why so many of the elders were missing various body parts.
