Konpeitō nodded in understanding at not having a consistent feeling on the island. It was far from the worst place in the world, but there were many, many parts of it he could do without.

He tried to keep his eyes off of Adelaida's glass. It just kept getting refilled. Someone having a high alcohol tolerance, or not being affected by alcohol at all, wasn't uncommon. Still, he worried. He's seen the worst of hangovers.

"That makes sense to me. I was made to always approach life with energy and optimism." It stung that he wasn't fulling that perfectly. "That's still admirable though. Not a lot of people are like that. For many, it can be hard to work towards what they're passionate about, so I'd say you're a special minority."

"Made? You artificial? Haven't seen one in a while..."

Adelaida put down the glass and turned to face her companion. She eyed him with curiosity sparkling in her tired but bright eyes. Anything that indicated magical prowess was worthy of attention to her, and she ignored the slight buzz that she was finally feeling.

"I am pretty awesome, all things considered. Always tired, but always a good piece of work."

Konpeitō laughed at Adelaida's reaction to the compliment. He enjoyed seeing people who took a compliment and ran with it through the finish line.

"Not artificial. More... a test-tube baby? Is that the term for someone genetically engineered? Anyway, I was made in a lab, but I have absolutely no memories of it. I was bought by my dad before I could make memories, then learned about it after being brought here."

"Hey, at least it's confirmed you were wanted. I was an accident that kind of had disastrous consequences for my family down the line, so I'd be lying if I said I don't feel any envy. Haven't been kept down by the losses, but every now and then I do wonder why I've dealt with everything so well."

Adelaida bounced back from everything remarkably quickly, all things considered. Around twice a week, it made her question herself for approximately five minutes and then she would conclude that there was no real answer. But whenever the opportunity presented itself, she liked posing the question with people to see if they would have some insights.

But more than anything, she really missed losing herself in her studies. "Maaaan, it's been so long since I last made artificial 'life'. I miss creation."

Flattered and confused, Konpeitō chuckled nervously. "There were upsides and downsides to my creation. Technically, I also had disastrous consequences for my family down the line." Every time he thought about that, it was weird. At first, it was because he didn't feel guilty or sad, only wonderful. Now he kind of regretted what he did.

"I managed to get a scout to give me some of the information on how I and others like me were made to help with my shape-shifting. Remaking myself is one thing. Making something else like me—er, like my original me—is... too much. People have made familiars and robots here, but making actual sapient life has a lot more hoops to jump through."

Adelaida, now slightly tipsy, was in a bit of a bragging mood. "Nah, artificial sapient life isn't too hard. Just really, really time and resource consuming if you want them to be permanent, and the complexity rises the smarter you want them to be. But the time of my life where I dabbled with that is over, unless someone wants to hire me to make 'em a new human over the course of a couple of years."

She drank again, and turned to inspect this strange creature that piqued her curiosity more and more. New things were always fun to know more about.

"That's not very interesting speaking though. I'd rather know more about you, like what you mean by consequences. I don't mind sharing what I mean on my side about being consequential, but I'd rather trade it. Secret for secret, just like in the old days with the mages."

"Isn't too hard," she says. He wanted to argue against that, but he was reminded of the few times he said building a computer wasn't hard and got strange looks.

There were more important things for him to think through, like how to answer Adelaida's answer. "Aah... I'm not sure how to explain it." He rubbed the back of his neck with a nervous laugh. "When I was taken here, my dad was put in jail for technically participating in slave trading. I wasn't sure how to deal with my grief, so I gave my bond to him away to a demon who turned emotions into masks that can be worn to feel. Sometime later, he," he did a whoosh gesture, "disappeared. I assume he's some fae's slave right now."

Adelaida nodded in understanding. The fae were notoriously tricky to deal with, which was why for her first true exploration of the external powers she instead went for something less prideful and more primal.

"Looks like your case is less clear-cut than mine. For me, it was a lot simpler. Drew power from the Living Flame, messed up a little, and... well, I burned my home, my soul, and my family. And the maid I created over half a decade's work. Good thing bank accounts exist so at least I still have my money."

She took another swig. "At least you have the chance to correct your... mistakes? Because there's still a chance your dad's alive. If ever you wanted to. Wouldn't blame you for not wanting to though. I hate dealing with the fae, if I'm being honest. Too many bells and whistles and too much hoity toity betterer than thee nonsense."

Adelaida received no response for a couple of seconds. There was a misunderstanding and he wasn't sure how to clear it up, or if he even should. "Ah... First, I'm sorry to hear about your family and, well, everything. That's awful."

He took a deep breath, then went on the address the mistake with a laugh. "What I did wasn't a mistake. I don't feel bad about it. I'm not sure I really feel anything about it. It's more that... if he was alive and I could somehow get him back, some normality from my old life might be returned, but I doubt my therapist and friends would be okay with that. He would still be put on the islets, his crimes would be public, and everything we had was lost, anyway. But you're right, dealing with fae is a whole mess." He gave another laugh, this time a bit more stiff. "My situation is a whole mess, but I'm slowly figuring it out."

Adelaida raised her nth glass of whiskey to toast. "To having no regrets, even when it's weird."

She drank and smiled blissfully. She was feeling warm inside, and she loved feeling warm. It made her comfortable. "My family was a pretty good bunch. But I've had so much time to move past all the regret and grief. Pretty sure I won't revive 'em either when I eventually get my magic back."

Her arm reached out and pulled Konpeito in, holding on around his shoulders, bringing her face close to his without regard for personal space. "I like a forward-facing man. Or woman! Keep moving forward, pal.I like that willpower."
