Konpeitō brightened at Adelaida. He knew he had made an overly long explanation, yet she didn't seem to mind. Everything about him but his clothes became a little more saturated.

"That's completely fair. It's a dangerous power, and I'm lucky that I'm not dead or worse. It's just... There was stuff about me I had to change, and I needed to get it perfect. Everything else was icing on the cake. Sometimes that icing threatened to ruin the entire cake, but in the end, I'm happy with what I have."

The hamburger went ignored until he finished up his fries. After scooping up some small bits to toss into his mouth, he started on his burger.

The food was done with, and Adelaida was back on the drinks. Every week that passed seemed to increase both her tolerance and penchant for alcohol. She made a mental note to try and rein it in for a bit at the very least.

"I gotta say, us magicians are probably the greediest bunch. We go all in for the weirdest things... I don't know what you risked dying or worse for, but look at me. Lost my soul and more chasing a new peak of magic, and lost my magic again. And the thing is I'm pretty sure if I got sent back in time I'd do it again, just better."

He swallowed his food. "I'm greedy in all sorts of ways!" he replied with a laugh. "I wouldn't judge you for doing that. I'd do the same. My magic was to make me a man and get rid of all the downsides of my old species, and now I'm better than ever." Talking about it was weird, yet pride swelled inside of him and he couldn't stop smiling. He knew he looked like a complete dork right now.

A satisfied sigh of relief left him. "Do you have any big plans for your future?"

"Not at the moment. My current situation has the side effect of constantly requiring me to keep the fires inside, so that eats up most of my mental capacity when I'm not doing things. But I have been studying rituals from other places that don't rely on innate magic so within half a decade at the latest I'll probably have my magic back. Beyond that, I don't have any real plans."

Adelaida could feel her old pride welling up. Even as someone who lost her magic, she was extremely confident in her capabilities, and knew it wasn't too far-fetched for her to regain everything. She was truly a greedy person deep down.

"Aah, I love that! I love your optimism! There aren't enough optimistic people here on the island. So many people are—are—I'm trying to think of a way to put this nicely. We all have our traumas, but it feels like so many people would rather stew in their misfortune than overcome it, even if it takes years."

Another sigh, this time from expending all that energy on a rant he didn't expect. For the leader of TWIS to criticize people for being too depressed to work through their problems was a bit of a dick move, he knew, but it was draining. Even when he wasn't working, people were determined to bring up their problems, then refuse to make things better.

"Not everyone's the same, so I'd hold off on the judgement. I consider myself exceptionally strong, you know. I'm definitely a special case."

Adelaida knew she was different. In fact, she'd spent much time back in the day wondering if her being different was a good thing or a bad thing.

"Besides, it's more normal to grieve or despair... I lost everything and I didn't feel a thing. That, I think, is more cause for concern than being sad or miserable."

Konpeitō took the first response as a sign that he might have stepped over the line a bit. His smile tensed as he focused on keeping his form consistent.

"From a human perspective, that might be true, but it's as you said, not everyone is the same. Narrow Reality or Manta Carlos, there's a lot of things people might consider 'concerning' or 'wrong' simply because it doesn't match their normal. It doesn't matter if it's not hurting anyone. Of course, that doesn't really apply if you don't like how you reacted." He knew he was speaking from experience and he didn't really care. There were parts about the island he hated, and he could feel himself fuming a little as he bit into his hamburger.

"You okay there pal? I'm reading some vibes off of you that sounds like I hit a nerve or something. Don't know why that'd be though."

Adelaida trusted her gut, which was now telling her that for whatever reason, her companion was in a less than good state of mind. She'd had a keen enough eye since before she decided to pick up interpreting people as her field of study, and it had only gotten sharper since.

She took down the last of her current glass of alcohol. "It's a relaxing night out. Now why don't we just kick back a few drinks and calmly talk it over..."

"Huh?" Konpeitō's body turned a little pink. It wasn't blatant enough for him to notice, however. "A-Ah, no. Well, yes, but you didn't do anything wrong. I can get very passionate when talking, and oooh do I have thoughts about Manta Carlos sometimes," he replied with a laugh.

"You're right, we're having a relaxing night. I wouldn't want to scare you off. I'm having too much fun chatting."

"Can't tell you what I think of this island honestly. Changes day to day... sometimes I like it, and sometimes it's the worst place in the world."

Adelaida was now on her fourth whiskey of the night. "Passion's pretty nice to have. Other than magic, I haven't really been passionate about a lot of things myself... just happens that I will do one hundred percent even if I don't really care about what's going on."
