Ellyn sat at one of the island's bus stations. The streetlights were only just coming on, the nearing winter having made the sun set earlier than usual. She'd have been here earlier but had managed to get just a tad lost. Now, she was waiting at the stop, seated on a bench, for the bus to come back around and take her to Starlight Academy.
Night had become a dangerous time as of recently. More murders were popping up. Cute girls around her age, anywhere from thirteen to eighteen, or so, it seemed. Even the campus wasn't completely safe. That girl, Melony whatever had gone missing, hadn't she? Never to be found. There were far too many serial killers around this island.
When Ellyn had first arrived here, she'd been all starry-eyed, but now she saw this island had a way of creating monsters or bringing them out when they would have hidden better before. With that thought, the girl pulled her knees to her chest and cradled her backpack between her knees and her chest. When she breathed out, there was the barest hint of steam. She was smart to have brought a jacket.
Looking up and down the street, Ellyn could see there was an eery stillness. It wasn't so much that no one was around — that rarely happened on the island — but it was quiet. Earsplittingly so. The nightlife wasn't fully active yet, and the people who stayed awake during the day were heading home or into noisy clubs. There was the safety of numbers in this places and that knowledge made Ellyn feel even more along than she really was.
Without thinking why the girl pulled out her phone and sent her mother a text about how much she loved her and missed her. Promised to call later, when she was home and the signal was better. She smiled down at the screen.
