Everything was white and cold and while the white hurt the eyes, Alec-- no, Paradox-- was enjoying the cold. The sun was hiding behind thick clouds, too, which meant there was no reason to hide under the shades today.

Good thing, too, because the city was so lively, and Paradox has never seen it like this before. He wouldn't have wanted to miss it.

He, however, had to keep in mind that he wasn't alone in town today, so he had to keep his attention from straying too much. He was heading towards this nice café in the heart of the city, and he constantly had to make sure his company, Miss Clouds, didn't get lost in the crowd. It almost came to a point that he had to hold her arm somehow, or else she might end up floating away from him.

He normally wouldn't mind but... he wasn't a heartless person without conscience. He had said some time ago that he was willing to be her friend, and that's what they are now, and he wasn't just going to ditch her if her mind starts going somewhere.

"Max," he called as they reached the establishment. He had already let her wrist go a couple of minutes ago. "We're here. You're fine with this place, right?"

"Hmm... I was here with a lake once," Max said, craning her neck around and looking around. Everything seemed to be in order, except there were less people than she last remembered seeing.

She did vividly remember sitting at a specific table with the ethereal lake, eating and talking after much effort. There was also the vaguest memory of a few sandwiches tasting good, and a surprisingly pleasant general feel of the experience.

Quietly, she nodded and stepped a little closer to - she shut her eyes for a bit to confirm that it was Paradox currently in charge - Paradox. He let her go earlier, and while it felt good to be unrestricted she kind of enjoyed being led. She enjoyed not having to worry about destination, or about getting lost.

Max stepped over to a vacant table and sat down, her hands on her lap. "I think we sit here like this and... I don't remember what comes next."

"A... Lake?" Paradox blinked, tilting his head as well at that. Being in Manta Carlos and all, he was sure there were all kinds of creatures here but... he still caught himself bemused.

He followed Max to the vacant table and for a moment, he just sat there opposite of her, watching her be herself. While Paradox was always amused, his expression was blank, and he rested his chin on his hand, which was propped up through his elbow.

"Well, after this, a waitress should come-- ah, speaking of which..." A waitress in the cafe's cute but formal uniform came to greet them and give them the menu. They'd give her their orders and all that, and she disappeared once more, leaving them to themselves.

They were against a glass wall that showed the white city outside, and Paradox turned his head to watch the snow, and the people, and the clouds above as well.

It was his first winter in the island.

"Say," Paradox turned to Max, "How many winters have you spent here already?"

As Paradox tilted his head, so did Max, as if keeping their eyes level. "Is it unusual? I didn't know..." The ramifications of befriending a lake weighed down on her thoughts. There were so many things to think about there, not least of which were I thought that was common...

The snow was nice at least. It didn't do Max any favors, and she didn't much like having to wear such thick clothing, as it restricted what little freedom she felt she had. She turned her eyes to the window, gazing as wistfully as possible, which wasn't too different from her normal expression. "Everything's so white... it's like the world's starting to go blank."

She turned again, back to Paradox. Her gaze stuck there for a bit, wondering what to say. The passage of time wasn't something she was too aware of, as every season felt the same to her, except for the clothing required. "This is my first winter here in this store... I was only made aware of this place recently. By... a friend."

The mere mention of the word 'friend' brought a little tinge of red to her cheeks, and the smallest, gentlest smile to her lips. It was a pleasant feeling to have someone she could think of in such a way.

"Blank?" Paradox returned her stare, not minding, and frankly already used to, slow passes of time like this with Max. He never did help her snap out of her daze, unless something urgent came up, which almost never happened. He knew he should, somehow, but it was fun not to.

And he snickered as she spoke of a friend and smiled. "Mm, that's nice, Miss Clouds," he said, even though that wasn't exactly what he was asking her, before looking over his shoulder as he sensed that their orders have finally arrived. His was hot latte and a slice of chocolate cake and three saucer-sized chocolate chip cookies. This was a cafe, after all, and the sweets were what's best about it.

"Who's this friend? Was it the lake?" he asked as their food was being set down on the table. He was still wasn't sure if Max meant a literal lake that could transform into a mobile body, or if it was a spirit of a lake or whatnot, but he believed it was between those ideas.

"Yes." Max nodded serenely, remembering the brief stay they had here. It was him that first introduced her to this place, and she remembered enjoying some of the food offered.

Speaking of food.

Max realized that she had forgotten to place an order as she stared at Paradox's meal, and hastily lowered her head, feeling a faint warmth in it. She stood up, moved her chair and followed the waitstaff. With an apologetic bow she placed her order and pointed sheepishly to her abandoned chair.

Carefully, she stepped back to her seat and sat with her hands on her lap, looking down. "I - I'm sorry about that," she stammered out, letting her hair cover her face. "I didn't realize I forgot to order. I was... thinking too much, I think."
