Lochlann nodded, relieved by the conversation change, although he still fidgeted frequently and seemed almost jumpy in comparison.

When she said he was more important, Lochlann laughed, then realized she wasn't joking and blushed. He looked down at the ground, then back up at her.

He did want to eat later. It might be nice to visit someone. Lochlann chewed on the inside of his cheek. He tasted blood.

"I'm glad your clothes are going well," he said. "I was thinking about you when I was at home. My sister was going to her semiformal. She was wearing an interesting dress. it was black, of course, but there was this...stripey thing that looked like it was made of fish scales."

He tried to demonstrate stripey thing with his hands to show where on her body the sash would be.

Could he go to dinner with her?

"Maybe for a little," he said. "If that would be okay with you. I would pay. where do you want to go?"

"Hey, at least you remembered me probably fondly," Eph said, grinning. "That's more than what I'd have expected from remembering me from, well, scales. Although next time, you should probably remember other things, okay? Maybe fish."

Eph stretched out her arms and put her palms up, staring at the snow as it fell down softly. "I should've brought gloves," she said, sneezing a little and then rubbing her palms together.

Regret welled up inside her, as the mention of food had her feeling a little more hungry than she should have been. Only a little too late did she stop herself from licking her lips.

"There's this nice steak and seafood place by the sea if you're fine with that. I don't really have much else in mind... haven't had meat in ages for various reasons."

"oh...No, I didn't mean because you had scales," Lochlann explained. "But because I've never seen anything like that on a dress before. It surprised me, especially on my sister. She looked very beautiful."

Lochlann shook his head. he could not believe he was talking about his sister going to semi with anyone. He shook his head again and then put his face into his hands.

When he looked up, Eph looked cold, so Lochlann took her hands and held them between his own and rubbed them. He was always burning a little hot, but his temperature had been doing better since he'd been drinking less.

Lochlann considered this. He wanted to get Eph out of the snow because it was cold and she was cold and she was nice enough to come here for him but...at the same time, Lochlann did not want to go any place near the sea. He tried to think of a way to suggest some place else that did not involve being close to water.

The lake was frozen.

The ocean never froze.

"If you're in the mood for meat, there's a steak place that opened downtown," he said. "We could skip the sea food all together."

Fuck he hoped it wasn't closed.

feel free to have them go to the place by the ocean--lochlann just needs to protest it xD

"That's a good idea," Eph said thoughtfully, stifling a shiver and biting a finger. "That's all I'm saying. It's a good idea. I thoroughly reject it, but it's a good idea. The only reason I'll consider is allergies, and... doubtful."

She drew closer, close enough so she could wrap her arms around his waist - mostly for warmth - and stare up at his eyes. Her words were filled with so much unnecessary pomp that one could almost picture her gesticulating behind Lochlann's back. "You've been away awhile... so I'll be operating under the assumption that your taste has gotten bad and you need to be, hmm... reacquainted with the idea of good food. Therefore, I have made an executive decision to veto all your food choices."

She winked. "Besides, I have a discount there for reasons that I was going to use on Crystal, but like I said, you're more important. No - not that she's not important or anything, I love her like my sister and all - but, ah, - you know what, you get it."

Her arms unlatched and she spun around, getting a little snow on her nose and sneezing a little more. She began to walk backward, back in the general direction of her home and the city. "Speaking of... you never mentioned having a sister. You should've! I could've made some sort of gift for you to take back home for her. Screw your parents, they can get their own stuff."

Eph chuckled lightly and then hastily shook her head to retract the last bit of her statement before giggling a little more.

Lochlann was doomed.

There was a pretty girl with her arms wrapped around his hips telling him that she was going to reacquaint him with the idea of good food.

For a few moments too long, Lochann tried to imagine what eating Eph would be like. He was embarrassed when he realized his mouth was full of saliva and swallowed, hoping that she'd mistake this for desire for dinner rather than desire for, well, eating her. He sighed and looked down at her big eyes and Lochlann knew he was doomed. There was no way he was getting out of this.

But, like a deer caught in the jaws of a wolf, Lochlann still made a few futile kicks even though he knew it was all over.

"Eph, you're cold now," he said. "It's only going to be colder by the shore. Are you sure you want to go there in the winter?"

Resistance was futile.

Lochlann had let slip more about his family than he intended, but it was too late to go back, and it got him off the hook for talking about himself.

"I have a brother, too," he said. "But we were never close. I've always gotten along with my sister better."

He laughed at the idea of trying to bring his sister home a present. He tried not to think about his parents too much. Lochlann figured he was lucky enough to have been allowed to leave rather than being killed out right. Yikes, Christmas had been bad.

"This isn't...a dress up kind of restaurant, is it?" Lochlann asked. "I uh, don't have all my clothes back yet."

He hoped it was so they could go somewhere that wasn't near the shore.

"Aw, are you nervous? Don't worry, I won't bite," Eph teased. She noticed that tiny gulp, and wondered what exactly he would have wanted to eat or why he seemed so reserved about the thought of a seaside dinner. There weren't any allergies mentioned, so that couldn't have been it. "Why are you nervous? The worst that could happen is I probably mess up so hard while eating that I lose my tail."

He struggled a little more against her invitation in a way that could not possibly work. Faking a little bit of pouting, Eph responded sulkily, "I went here to the frozen lake for you and even bent over on the ice while I was cold for you... a-choo."

There was no way that fake sneeze could be in any way thought of as legitimate. "Anyway, you'll have to tell me more about your family later, okay? Steak's not going to be the only thing grilling tonight."

Briefly Eph entertained the thought of bringing Lochlann home to lend him a suit. The mental image seemed decent, even if she knew that bringing him home meant they probably wouldn't be leaving until the morning. "It's not really a dress code sort of thing, but if you want we could pop by my place and I'd lend you something nice... this is a limited time offer by the way aaaaand offer's done. Let's go eat!"

Lochlann didn't groan. He didn't want to seem ungrateful--he did enjoy having dinner with his friends. it was just the idea of having dinner at a sea side restaurant when we already felt so unseated and then, on top of that, having Eph question him like he was wanted for a crime that made him considerably uncomfortable.

"Okay," he said. "Well...you win."

Lochlann picked up his stuff and shoved it back into his backpack, got up from the ground, and then offered her his hand.

"Shall we?" he said.

He felt like he was going off to be prepared for slaughter.

TIme skip?

"Well, here we are," Eph declared, letting go of Lochlann's hands and turning back around. She'd been walking backwards for the better part of fifteen minutes while pulling him forward, as part of some silly challenge that arose in her attempts to lighten the mood earlier. "Told you I could do it. Nobody ever puts enough faith in the cute lizard but she can do it."

Quickly, she brushed the light snow buildup from off her shoulders, and then from her head, and then his head. His height forced her to tiptoe just to achieve that properly, but it gave her some satisfaction to do so. "So, you want to go inside, or at the veranda? And this time, I'm actually giving you a choice."

Lochlann had to admit: Eph's challenge, insane as it may be, was none the less impressive.

"I have to give you credit, I didn't think you were going to make it," he said. When she dusted the snow off of him, Lochlann was surprised. He forgot how cold it was. He didn't feel it like Eph did.

He considered her offer and answered easily.

"Inside," he said.

They'd be in the warmth and also out of the view of the damned ocean. Lochlann started towards the door and then stopped and looked at her for a long moment. Finally, he gave her a small smile.

"Thanks for meeting me like this," he said. "I think maybe I needed this."

He shook his head before it could get too serious and said, "So what on the menu is worth eating first?"

"You know, I want to say 'let's stay out here' just to mess with you but..." Eph trailed off and stepped inside, where there was a little more heat than outside.

Inside was warm - even the lights were a warm shade, as a welcome contrast to the cold of the snow outside. The seats were of something seemingly luxurious, though she'd been here enough times to know that they were actually really cheap, and some of the other tables were actually literally homemade.

She sat by the window at a table for two, pulling up and patting the opposite chair with her tail. "I'm not on the menu, but we can work something out. Try the squid ceviche if you like seafood, or maybe the grilled eel, or beef tenderloin steak. Or, if you want, they always serve a very weird special of the day."
