"Ugh, you don't drink it black do you?" She mock sneered as she peeled back the top of a creamer and dumped it into his cup. One more creamer and the coffee stirred itself again, then she replaced the lids. Instead of standing, she turned on her toes and sat down on the ground with her back to the wall, holding his coffee out to him and then cradling her own in both hands, warming her cold fingers.

Cat thought about how to answer while she trained her eyes on him, then finally settled on a half truth. "Distracted. It was a lot to take in." She smiled at him to soften it. "When you drop a bomb on a girl, you don't hold back." She raised her hand up to him to draw him down next to her invitingly.

"If black is how it comes, it's how I'll drink it," Lochlann said. He gave her a sheepish smile and then took the cup with a "Thank you" as she passed it to him. Wen she sat down, he joined her against the flat of the roof, letting his back press against it and his shoulder brush hers before he settled in completely.

Lochlann took a sip of his coffee. It was good, and he realized now he'd probably need it.

"Sorry," Lochlann said, grabbing onto her metaphor. "It's not a bomb I've ever really dropped before. I wasn't sure how to minimize the damage."

His breath hung in the air for a moment so he took another sip of the coffee.

"Did you try and steal my school record?" he asked her.

It's what he would have done.

"Oh yuck," she told him. Black coffee was bitter. Cat liked sweet. Maybe too sweet. Okay, she liked coffee to not taste like coffee at all. She watched him sip his, cradling her cup in both hands near her face so the steam warmed her skin. She kept watching him, her eyes soft and tired, while he spoke.

I wasn't sure how to minimize the damage.

"By telling someone who won't be your collateral damage." She turned her brown eyes to her cup, took a sip, continued to look at the cup. She laughed at his inquiry. "No. It wouldn't be kind or right. I googled you," half grin. "Well...not you but, you know. I think I know all there is to know about fae at this point. My head is swimming with it." She turned to look at him again finally. "I hope that doesn't....I don't..." know what to say. "Do you want to eat me, Lochlann.... like a meal? Please don't be afraid to tell me. I think I already know but if...this...is going to work" whatever this was becoming, "then I need honesty and I know you've laid a lot of yourself out there for me to see but I need all of it." She shrugged and turned her eyes down away from his again.

"I mean, I guess if you want whatever this is...?" her tone lilted into a guarded question.

She was sure that committing herself to anything at all with a person who she needed to know how to protect herself from was a very bad idea. She was doing it anyways. She'd never considered herself a stupid girl but she was beginning to see otherwise.

He was a little bit relieved when she said she didn't take his school file.

"Well," he admitted. "It's what I would have done."

Not that he did look up her school file. But he'd tried to steal one or two. It was getting harder after the last few times. When she said she'd googled him, Lochlann considered this. He didn't think he'd really come up on google--his name was uncommon enough, sure, but he didn't really have social media and his family was surprisingly good about keeping away from online listings.

But then he understood what she meant and he took a deep breath.

"Hah, swimming with it," he said, catching her joke, but he was tilting his head back to rest against the roof. Shit. She asked good questions. He couldn't blame her for wanting to know.

Lochlann licked his lips and then regretted the gesture. He took a long sip of coffee.

Did he want to eat her?

"Yes," he said. "It's the worst part."

He shifted and took another deep breath. He was starting to feel warm and he unzipped the first few inches of his jacket. It felt too tight on his neck. He wanted desperately to take his shirt off.

Lochlann fidgeted with one of his sleeves, still holding the coffee.

"It'd be easier to forgive me, I think, if I didn't want it so badly," Lochlann told her. She was right. If this was going to work, he'd have to lay this out on the table, too. He'd already come this far, but it still felt like he was stripping himself down to the bones for her.

He tried to put this in words, too.

"The curve of your neck," Lochlann said, feeling his face grow hot as he said the words. "it's beautiful. I can't decide if I find it beautiful if it's because I want to kiss it, if this want is sexual, or if it's...well..."

Or if it was because he was afraid to sleep because he might dream about ripping into it.

He wanted to back step.

He wanted to say, I don't want to eat you but you make me hungry. But that implied to him that this was in some way Cat's fault, and it wasn't. She wasn't doing anything. It was whatever was fucked up about him.

Caitlin had laughed when he admitted to being willing to steal her file. "And there's that bad boy reputation peeking through. Go ahead, it's full of straight A's and teacher's pet." The worst, most embarrassing thing in her file would be her one and only B-. To the day it dug all the way down to her core like a rotting part of an apple.

She knew the answer when he put his head back. She knew the answer when he licked his lips. She knew the answer last week when he'd said that his kind of creature wanted to drown and eat girls. It didn't stop her stomach from dropping and she took a quick sip of her coffee, burning the roof of her mouth, to hide any knee jerk reaction her face might dig up.

She watched him fidget at the edge of her vision and held very still, trying desperately not to fidget as well. She wasn't feeling as confident as she always did but she didn't want to appear less confident and she didn't feel any less bold. At least she still had that.

Listening to him gave her the intense feeling of standing in front of a tiger's cage, watching it's beauty and knowing that all the while, as it looked back, it was thinking about how good you might taste. Her pulse was suddenly in her mouth, a thing she could taste. Her hand treacherously went to her throat and she turned to look at him, sloshing some of her hot coffee over her hand. She winced.

"It's sexual." she replied flatly. "Trust me, I have an amazing neck." She nodded and forced her hand to fall casually from her throat. "This must be awful for you," she added while picking up a napkin to dab at the spilled coffee on her hand. "If it's too much I'll leave you be?" That questioning note again. Part of her hoped he would shut her out now, before she got in over her head. Another part knew she would feel deeply wounded.

He believed her about the file and returned her admission with a smile.

Cat made a few jerky movements next to her. He still had his head tilted back up against the wall so he missed the cause, but he assumed it was him until the smell of warm coffee hit his nose and he realized she'd spilled some on herself.

"I think I have..." he put his own coffee down and reached into his pocket, removing a folded up tissue to hand to her for the spill. It was clean, but had clearly been shoved in there without too much thought. Then, he realized she'd already found one, so he apologized and moved it back into his pocket next to his cigarettes.

He was almost glad for the coffee thing because it gave him a moment to think. It seemed to be all he ever thought about but when it came time to put it into words, Lochlann had none.

Her flat comment about her neck took him back and he realized he felt relieved by it, but also guilty.

"Hands, too," Lochlann commented. For some reason, he felt better saying hands. He never really thought about eating her hands, but instead what it'd be like to be touched by them. That felt safe.

Weird for him to say, but safe.

He wished he thought of it earlier.

"I'm okay," he said, and he was surprised to find that he was. Admitting that he wanted to eat her was....oddly freeing. It was almost as if by saying it he wanted it less, although that wasn't entirely true. "I'm more worried about how you're taking all of this. I mean, i imagine you don't usually have strange men telling you they want to eat you."

he realized the double entendre and frowned.

"This is different," he told her. "I feel like I'm breaking all the rules and now I don't know how to play the game."

Hands too.

A smile finally spread across her face. She wiggled the fingers on her free hand, resting in her lap. "These hands produce some pretty awesome stuff." She'd show him her portfolio, she decided. It wasn't a special gesture, she didn't keep her artwork a secret, but she didn't make a habit of just deciding that she wanted someone to see it either.

Again, she laughed out loud when he spoke, catching the slip and seizing it as an opportunity to lighten their mood. It felt important to keep this as light as it could be. She shook her head, rolling her eyes upward. "You have no idea!" Forced grin, but a grin nonetheless.

Cat lifted her hand and reached for his, wrapping her fingers around his, and then shifting to lace them through his and resting their hands between them on the ground. She leaned over and lay her cheek on his shoulder. "Well, lets make up our own rules then. We don't have to play someone else's game, you know?" She lifted her chin to look up at him.

"The thing is I really like you too. And I haven't really liked someone in a very long time. I don't want to miss this because I'm scared," never one to let her fears get in her way. "Besides," pause, smile, she tucked her chin back down so he couldn't see her blush. "I like your neck too."

It took Lochlann a moment to remember she was a writer and an artist. When she made the comment about hands producing awesome stuff, his face blanched and then turned scarlet. He picked up his coffee and coughed, then took a sip, because oh fuck, was his mind in the gutter.

"I am a grade a pervert,' he confessed when he finally had his voice back.

The mood was a lot lighter than he expected and he was relieved.
Suddenly, her fingers were laced within his and her cheek was on his shoulder and she was
touching him.

He relaxed against her and she'd be able to feel some of the stiffness leaving even his hands and his shoulders. He never realized how stiff he was until he suddenly wasn't.

"I like you, too," Lochlann said. To hear that she liked him made his heart flutter. He licked his lips again and, when she said she liked his neck, his face felt hot but this time not from shame.

"I would like that," Lochlann said. "To make our own rules. But I think it's only fair for you to make the first one."

He gave her hand a gentle squeeze.

"I think, though, we should probably both go to the hospital afterwards," he said. He paused for dramatic effect and then said, "To check for brain activity, because we both must be insane."

He reached down and took his coffee and said, "But I don't want this to be a bad idea, Cat. For either of us."

This already felt different. This already felt like maybe, this time, everything would go right.

His scarlet face set her face off too. Pervert? Really he was just a young man, and she knew that, but Cat gave his hand a shake anyways. "I didn't mean.... you're awful," she laughed out the words.

As his body relaxed, Cat felt some of her own tension leaving her. She'd had it buckled down tightly but for a week her body had been on pins and needles. She sipped her coffee again, more carefully, and winced anyways because once you've burned your mouth it's a done deed. Another sip, just to prove to herself she was being a wimp. It still hurt.

Her chuckle was soft, her thumb stroked back and forth over his first knuckle, savoring the feeling of someone's hand under hers, of his skin. "Ok, first rule: you aren't allowed to eat me for dinner. Or breakfast, lunch, brunch, or snacks." She raised his hand and pressed her lips to his knuckle to lighten the blow. Her tone was light and lilting, joking. "Maybe we ought to just start out getting our heads examined because I know we must be insane." This was a terrible idea, she knew it. She knew that he must know it too. She didn't care.

"Ok, real first rule: honesty. And not just 'oh you're my..." hesitation, she plowed ahead, "boyfriend and you have to be honest with me. I mean real, pure honesty. The kind of honesty that no one wants to admit to, the hardest kind. If I'm afraid of you, say right now, then I have to say 'Lochlann, you're scaring me.' and we call it a time out. Walk away. And if you are too tempted, like you're loosing it or... whatever... you have to say 'Caitlin, I am going to eat you up if you don't walk away now.' No matter what we are doing. Ok?"

Cat was aware that it was a really intense rule but she felt this rule down to her bones. This rule is what would keep her alive and keep him from something regretful. This rule was important. She didn't move away, she nuzzled in closer, pressing her side closer to his until their hands were trapped between them.

Lochlann was very seriously nodding for the first rule and looking especially grim, so when she lifted his hand and kissed it, he realized she'd been joking. He gave her an embarrassed smile that quickly straightened back once the conversation switched.

He stretched his bad leg out before them again and rested his other arm on his knee, holding the coffee in it.

"Okay," he said. "That's a fair rule. I worry it's going to be easier said than done."

For him, probably. Cat was good at confronting her fears, as she kept showing them over and over again. If she confronted him, he could walk away with no problem. He suspected the magic around them might have something to do with it.

"This is kind of like having a safe word," Lochlann said.

She was close to him, so close, and Lochlann could feel his heart beating a little bit faster.

He felt a little bold with his next question, but it was a question that fell into this category. For Lochlann, sex and death were inexplicably linked.

"What if I want to kiss you?" he asked.
